W: Hurry up, or you’ll miss your flight.
M: No worries. My taxi should be here any minute now.
W: Call us from the airport — and don’t forget to send a postcard.
Text 2
W: Hi, is that Wilson?
M: No, this is his brother Peter. Wilson is not available now. Can I take a message?
W: Sure. Could you tell him to call Linda when he gets back? I have something important
to tell him.
Text 3
M: Do you use a dryer after you’ve done the washing?
W: Well, I usually hang them up on sunny days. But on such a day like today, I have to
use a dryer.
M: Yeah, it looks as if it is going to rain.
Text 4
W: Excuse me, can I have some information on a trip to Chicago, please?
M: Certainly. But do you mind learning about it yourself first? We have some brochures
over there. You can ask me if you have any questions.
W: OK.

W: Good morning, Flora Hotel. What can I do for you?
M: I’ve made a reservation for this Wednesday. My name is Steve. I’m calling to change
it to this Friday, and for two nights.
W: All right.
Text 6
M: Karen, how is your work going?
W: Pretty well. I’m in charge of introducing new tech products into the market and
encouraging people to use more technology. I’ve become very good at it after
working in the field for five years.
M: But you look a bit tired. Is the work very tiring for you?
W: No. it’s not like that. I think I’ve been using my smartphone too much. I often use
it until midnight in bed.
M: Well, I guess you should convince yourself to use technology less.
W: I certainly should.
Text 7
M: Hi, there. I think I’m coming down with something. I need some medicine to get me
through the next few days.
W: Wow, you look terrible. What’s going on?
M: My nose has been running, and I have a headache.
W: Do you have a cough?
M: No, and I don’t have a fever.
W: Well, it could just be a cold. You should get some rest.
M: I have a very important job and I can’t miss any work, so please give me something
strong.
W: All right. If you’re still sick in three days, you should go to see a doctor.
M: Thanks for your help.
Text 8
W: Jim, what’s your favorite sport?
M: To watch or to play?
W: Both!
M: Well, football, of course. To just play, it would be golf. To watch only, it would be
skating.
W: Interesting. Why don’t you skate?
M: I think skating is a bit dangerous.
W: What about swimming?
M: I like swimming, but I consider it more of a hobby than a sport. How about you?
W: Well, I love tennis, particularly on the grass. I also love running and swimming. I
used to be on the school swimming team. It’s great for the body. If you ever get
injured while playing sports, swimming will help.
M: Oh, I forgot about tennis. I’m good at it. Shall we go for a game now? The weather

W: I have the time too. Let’s go!
Text 9
M: What are you going to do during the winter vacation? It’s coming soon.
W: Fly home to see my family. I didn’t go home during the Spring Festival last year,
because we had exams.
M: When was the Spring Festival?
W: Back in February. My parents usually decorate the house and make a huge meal for
the whole family.
M: Wow, sounds a bit like Christmas!
W: They are similar, certainly! It’s the biggest gift-giving festival in China. And it’s
traditional to get together with your whole family.
M: Sounds lovely.
W: It is. Thankfully, Los Angeles has a big Chinatown. There were plenty of celebrations
during the Spring Festival last year. It wasn’t quite like home, but I still had fun.
M: I’m glad to hear that.
W: What are you planning for the break?
M: My family and I are going to Paris.
W: Wow! France is beautiful. I went there when I was 10.
M: Cool! We’ve always wanted to go. We’ll spend three days in the city, and two days
at Disneyland!
W: I’m a big Disney fan. We actually have a Disneyland in Hong Kong, not far from
my house!

Now, I want to tell you a fantastic exhibition at the Science Museum. It’s called
“A Changing World” and it is all about global warming. The exhibition will start on
October 3rd and it will last for a week.
The first thing you’ll notice when you walk in is hundreds of pairs of boots because
the whole exhibition area is flooded with water. The idea is to show what will happen
if sea levels continue to rise. It really makes you think deeply.
One of the best shows is the one about the Arctic. In the room, there is a huge block
of ice, which is slowly becoming liquid. There are also a number of photos, which show
clearly how the sea ice is disappearing year after year.
As you walk around the exhibition, you’ll see that all over the walls there are
posters which explain the causes and effects of global warming. The content was written
especially for this exhibition by some famous scientists, so you can be sure that you are
getting the most up-to-date information.
There are some computers available at the end of the exhibition hall. You can use
them to send e-mails to your friends and let them know what you have learned or give
them advice on what they can do to fight global warming.
