Porridge—a perfect breakfast?
Porridge (粥). It doesn’t have a very tasty name, does it? I’m here to try and tell you that porridge isn’t boring
and tasteless, that it can be a delicious, easy to cook and very healthy way to start the day.
If you’ve never eaten it (although you probably have!), porridge is a kind of food for breakfast. It is usually a
kind of grain (谷物) with either milk or water, and often warmed up. It is very healthy, so it’s a very good choice
for people who are ill, and it gives long-lasting energy (能量) for the day.Porridge preparation is up to what you choose to use. If I’m cooking for myself, I put a very big handful of
oats (燕麦) in a pan, add a little bit of water and about 200 ml of milk, and let it boil. It takes about five minutes to
cook. Once it’s cooked, the fun part is putting more things in for the flavours (味道). Porridge alone doesn’t have a
very strong flavour. Although some people think this makes porridge boring, I think this is what makes porridge
exciting! It is like a piece of white paper—you can put in almost anything you want in the porridge. Dried fruits and
nuts are very healthy choices and can give you energy for the day. But if you don’t like these, then chocolate is also
very delicious choice. (Just don’t add too much!)
One of the best things about porridge? You can make it almost anywhere in the world. You can usually buy big
bags of oats, then add other things to make your porridge interesting—whatever is cheap and easy to find, wherever
you are. Porridge? Hopefully, it sounds a lot tastier now!
24.What can we learn about porridge?
A.It is hard to cook porridge.
B.It gives people a lot of energy.
C.It is a perfect breakfast in China.
D.It is not a good choice for sick people.
25.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.How to make porridge exciting.
B.Where to go to buy good porridge.
C.What we can use to put in porridge.
D.Why porridge is a perfect breakfast.
26.The writer writes this passage to ________.
A.encourage people to buy more porridge
B.introduce different kinds of breakfast
C.tell people porridge can be delicious
D.teach people how to cook porridge

China is a noodle paradise(天堂).The home of wheaten food(面食)across the world is China, and the
home of wheaten food in China is Shanxi province. As an American student, my first experience with noodles was
in Shanxi when I was an exchange (交换)student.
Everyone knows noodles are the king of Shanxi food. There are more than 100 ways to make noodles. Among
them, my favorite is the knife-cut noodles. The knife-cut noodles are one of the top five noodles in China, with the
other four being Hubei’s hot-dry noodles, Sichuan’s Dan Dan noodles, Beijing’ s fried sauce noodles and
Shandong’ s Yifu noodles.
Once in a restaurant, I ordered knife-cut noodles and I was lucky to see how the cook made them from the
window of the kitchen. I felt really surprised to see the cook shave (削)the noodles so quickly! When I tasted
the noodles for the first time, I felt super glad.
When I first learned to make knife-cut noodles, the more I practiced, the harder it seemed. But later, when I
got the angle (角度)right, it became a lot easier. In fact, you need a lot of skills if you want to cook them. Thefirst thing you need to do is to make a dough (禾口面).After that, let your dough rest for 5 to 10 minutes. Then
cut the noodles by running the knife up and down. The most difficult part is getting the right angle between the
knife and noodles. Finally, let them cook in the hot water for 5 minutes.
The reason why people like knife-cut noodles is that they have a special taste. Also, the way to make them is
an art form that takes years of practice.
36.Where are hot-dry noodles from?
A.Shanxi. B.Hubei. C.Sichuan.
37.How did the writer feel when he first tasted knife-cut noodles?
A.Glad. B.Surprised. C.Upset.
38.What do we know about the writer?
A.He is a Chinese student who studies in America.
B.Among all noodles, knife-cut noodles are his favorite.
C.It’ s easy fbr him to learn how to cook knife-cut noodles.
39.How do we make knife-cut noodles?
① Cook the noodles in the hot water for 5 minutes.
② Let the dough rest for 5 to 10 minutes.
③ Cut the noodles by running the knife up and down.
④ Make a dough.
A.④①③② B.④②①③ C.④②③①
40.Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the text?
A.Shanxi is a good place for noodle lovers from all over the world.
B.Knife-cut noodles are not only food but also a symbol of the art form.
C.In every place of China, you can eat a bowl of knife-cut noodles.
