Some people have a very poor sense(感觉)of direction. Unluckily, I am one of them. I
have visited a place many times but I may still get lost there the next time.
When I was a little girl, I never dared ask strangers the way. And so I used to walk round in
circle and hope that by chance I would get to the place I was going to.
Now, I am no longer too shy to ask people for directions, but I often receive helpless or even
wrong information. So I try to avoid giving people wrong directions. If anyone asks me the way
somewhere, I would say, “Sorry, I am a stranger here.”
Once on my way to work I was stopped by a man. He asked me if I could tell him the way tothe Friendship Building. I gave him my usual reply. But just as I walked on only a few steps, I
realized that he had asked the way to my office building. However, I had no time to turn back and
look for him. I was rushing to meet with someone at my office and I didn’t want to keep him
waiting.
When I just got to my office, the secretary showed in the man who had asked me for
directions. Imagine how embarrassed I was and how surprised he was when we saw each other at
the first sight!

Do you often carry maps when you travel to other countries? Maps can show you the right
ways. But if you don’t bring maps with you, what should you do? I’m afraid that you need to ask
the way. Here are some tips(建议) for you, because there are different ways to give ways in the
world.
In Japan, most streets don’t have their street names. The Japanese use landmarks(路标) to
give ways. So when you ask, “Excuse me, could you tell me how to get to the nearest post office?”They often say, “Go along the road, turn left on the second street and go past a supermarket. The
post office is opposite the hospital.”
In the countryside of the American midwest. The land is very flat(平坦的). So if you have the
same question, people will say to you, “Go east 3 kilometers, turn north and then walk another
kilometer.” But in Los Angeles and California, people measure distance(测量距离) by time, not
meters. So when you ask, “How far is the nearest post office?”, they will tell you, “It’s about 10
minutes’ walk from here”.
People in Greece often use body language to help you. They will use their hands to show the
right or left ways, or they will simply say, “follow me.” Because they can’t speak English and the
tourists couldn’t understand the language there.

(四)(2022·山东东营·中考真题)
In modern times, we get our weather report scientifically. The meteorologists(气象学家) use
information from satellites (卫星) to tell us what the weather will be like. They make predictions
about the weather for today, tomorrow and even for the whole season. Will it rain? Will it snow?
Will it be hot or will it be a long and cold winter?
But what did people do before modern technology? Well, not so long ago, people lived much
closer to nature. Using the power of observation (观察), humans made predictions about the
weather according to what was happening in the insect world. Sometimes their predictions were
correct, and sometimes they weren’t.
My grandfather spent his whole life as a farmer in Canada. He is long gone now. But I still
remember his stories about how to predict the weather. For example, in summer, he would often
stop to observe the anthills — those little sandy mounds (沙堆) at the entrance (入口) to theants’ nest.
“Look closely at the anthills in July,” Grandpa used to say. “If the anthills are high in July,
expect a snowy winter.” Of course, as a kid, I believed my grandfather. But you know what? The
anthills are often correct. Not always, but often enough to make me a believer.
In September, Grandpa would often point out a woolly caterpillar (毛毛虫) in a sunny
location, “Observe the orange circle around its belly (腹部). If it’s wide and full, we’re sure to
have a warm and easy winter. If it’s thin, be careful! The winter will be severe.”
I am older now. I get my weather mostly from the television or radio. Scientists hardly get it
wrong. After all, they have the latest scientific instruments to help them.
But I still stop to observe the anthills in July, and of course, the woolly caterpillars in
September. The older generation (老一辈) can teach us many things. My grandfather was not a
meteorologist, but he knew a lot about insects and the weather.
41.________ can help us predict the weather more correctly.
A.Satellites B.Anthills C.Woolly caterpillars D.Televisions or
radios
42.According to Grandpa’s experience, if the anthills are high in July, maybe it will be
________.
A.a rainy winter B.a snowy winter C.a long and cold winter D.a warm and
easy winter
43.Which word can replace (替代) the underlined word “severe” ?
A.hot B.warm C.cool D.cold
44.In the last paragraph, the writer thinks _________.
A.we should only listen to the meteorologists
B.his grandpa knew more than the meteorologists
C.we needn’t observe the insects to predict the weather
D.his grandpa’s ways to predict the weather are still helpful
45.Which would be a good title for this passage?
A.The power of observation B.Weather according to insects
C.Weather report in modern times D.Different ways to make predictions
