Mr. Li was teaching us English when the classroom suddenly shook. At first, I thought someone kicked my chair,
but soon desks made a soft noise and books fell off the shelves. “Earthquake! Calm down, line up!” Mr. Li shouted,
waving his hand to guide us.
I took my schoolbag and stood up, but Xiao Mei tripped over her chair and fell. I rushed to help her up — her
knees were scraped, but she bit her lip and said, “I’m okay, let’s go.” We walked down the stairs slowly, with Mr. Li
holding the rail at the front, reminding (提醒) us not to push. Outside, the playground was crowded, and some students
looked a little scared. Da Wei, our monitor, took out his phone to call our parents one by one.
Ten minutes later, the shaking stopped. When we went back to the classroom, we saw papers spread everywhere,
and a few flower pots on the windowsill (窗台) were broken. “Let’s clean up together!” Mr. Li said. We divided the
work: some picked up papers, some swept the floor, and I helped Xiao Mei wipe her knees with a wet wipe from my
bag. Xiao Yu, who lived nearby, ran home and brought back a box of band-aids (创可贴) — he even gave me one for
a small cut on my finger.
By late afternoon, the classroom looked tidy again. Before we left, Da Wei shared his mom’s homemade
mooncakes with us. “My mom says sharing food makes people feel better,” he laughed. I took a bite — it was sweet,
and warmth spread from my mouth to my heart.
That small earthquake didn’t damage the school, but it taught me something important: when trouble comes,
small acts of help can chase fear away. Now, I always remember that day we turned a scary moment into a warm
memory.
24. After the shaking stopped, what did Da Wei do before sharing mooncakes with classmates?
A. He ran home to get band-aids for everyone.
B. He used his phone to call the students’ parents.
C. He helped sweep the broken flower pots on the floor.
D. He wiped the writer’s small finger cut with a wet wipe.
25. What does the word “scraped” probably mean in the passage?
A. clean B. hurt C. smooth D. dirty
26. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. A small earthquake damaged the school badly.
B. Neighbors helped each other during the earthquake.
C. Teachers and students helped each other during the small earthquake.
D. Da Wei’s mom made delicious mooncakes for everyone.
27. What is the writer’s purpose of writing this passage?

If you are planning on travelling there are a few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and
after your journey.
First of all, always check and double-check departure (出发) time. It is surprising how few people really do this
carefully. Once I arrived at the airport a few minutes after ten. My secretary had got the ticket for me and I thought
she had said that the plane would leave at 10:50. Surprisingly, the person at the departure desk told me that my flight
was closed. Therefore, I had to wait three hours for the next one and missed an important meeting.
The second rule is to remember that even in this age of credit cards, it is still important to have some local money
in cash (现金). Once I arrived at a place at midnight and the bank at the airport was closed. The only way to get to
my hotel was by taxi but because I had no dollars, I offered to pay in pounds instead. “Listen! I only take real money!”
the driver said angrily. You can imagine how terrible I felt at that moment.
The third and the last rule is to find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you
leave. I feel sorry for some of my workmates who travelled in heavy suits and raincoats in May, when it is still fairly
cool in London or Manchester, to places like Athens, Rome or Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite
warm during the day.
28. When did the author arrive at the airport probably?
A. At 9:55. B. At 10:00. C. At 10:05. D. At 10:50.
29. When the author found he had no dollars to pay the taxi driver, he ________.
A. asked the driver to give him a free ride B. offered to pay in pounds
C. gave the driver some fake (假的) money D. tried to pay by credit card
30. Generally, in May the weather in London is ________.
A. warm and dry B. cold and dry
C. hot and wet D. cool and rainy
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. How to make life easier. B. How to be well prepared for a trip.
C. How to enjoy ourselves on a trip. D. How to schedule our trip.

Teenage life is not just about studying textbooks. Many students today spend all their free time on homework,
第5页/共10页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司but after-school activities play an important role in their growth. A small survey of 500 high school students from
three local schools shows that 65% of those who join after-school clubs feel less stressed than those who only study.
One student in the survey said, “Club meetings help me forget about exam stress for a while — I feel more relaxed
afterward.”
Why do some teens avoid after-school activities? One main reason is fear of falling behind in lessons. They
think extra time should go to homework or exam practice. Some teens also worry about not being good enough —
for example, they might hesitate to join a sports team because they think they’re not fast enough. Another reason is not
knowing how to choose — there are so many options like sports teams, art groups or reading clubs.
In fact, after-school activities bring great benefits. Sports like basketball or running help teens stay healthy and
learn teamwork. Last term, a group of students in the art club organized a small exhibition at school. Their paintings
about daily life got lots of praise, and many said they felt proud for the first time. Art clubs, such as painting or music,
let them show creativity. Even reading clubs can improve vocabulary and make teens more confident when talking
to others. These skills are just as useful as good grades for future life.
How can teens make the most of after-school activities? First, pick one or two that they really like — don’t join
too many. Second, plan time well: finish homework first, then spend 1-2 hours on the activity. Teachers and parents
can also help by supporting their choices, not just pushing for better exam scores.
Teenage years are a time to grow in many ways. With the right balance of study and after-school activities, teens
can become happier and more capable, getting ready for the challenges ahead.
32. What can we know about the small survey mentioned in the passage?
A. It was carried out among 500 students from three national schools.
B. It showed most club members have less exam stress than non-members.
C. It lasted for one term to track students’ after-school activities.
D. It focused on the relationship between hobbies and exam scores.
33. What does the underlined word “hesitate” probably mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Refuse politely. B. Feel unsure and slow to act.
C. Decide quickly. D. Argue strongly.
34. What can we infer about parents from the passage?
.
A They often help teens choose suitable after-school activities.
B. They usually push teens to join more art or sports clubs.
C. They may pay too much attention to teens’ exam scores.
D. They prefer teens to finish homework after club activities.
35. What is the passage mainly about?
第6页/共10页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司A. The ways to organize colorful after-school activities in schools.
B. The reasons why teens should avoid too many after-school clubs.
C. The importance of balancing study and after-school activities.
D. The relationship between club participation and academic performance.
