妙笔巧绘盛世,厚植家国情怀 —— 初中语文国庆特色实践作业纪实 SUIS-HF Specialised Practical Assignments

Autumn light fills the campus, whilst the nation and home find their way onto the pages. To celebrate the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Secondary Chinese Department at SUIS Hefei Campus organised a special practical assignment activity entitled ‘Capturing the Splendour of a Prosperous Era with Skillful Pens, Deepening Patriotic Sentiments’, using the Chinese language as its foundation and the nation and home as its inspiration. Blending the charm of cartography with the aroma of local cuisine, the elegance of architecture, the artistry of intangible cultural heritage, the melodies of traditional opera and the ingenuity of science and technology, a refined cultural gathering for National Day—where past and present complement one another and disciplines intertwine—gradually unfolded. Breaking away from traditional written homework formats, the school organised pupils to create maps showcasing the distinctive features of China and Anhui Province, enabling them to develop a love for their hometown and a sense of respect for their motherland through hands-on exploration.

A single map encompasses a myriad of phenomena; a single sheet of paper embraces a thousand rivers. The most compelling aspect of this practical assignment lies in its interdisciplinary integration and innovation — taking Chinese as the main focus, weaving in threads of history, drawing on the essence of geography, utilising the precision of mathematics, incorporating the fascination of biology, infusing the colours of art, and adding the intelligence of AI. By breaking down disciplinary boundaries and constructing multidimensional learning scenarios, it allows for comprehensive, inquiry-based learning to unfold seamlessly within a single map.

Putting learning into practice, where knowledge and action are intertwined. Students consult historical records and draft cultural commentary to hone their literary expression; drawing on their knowledge of geography, they identify geographical locations and landforms; by tracing the origins of ancient architecture and intangible cultural heritage, they explore historical threads; they skilfully use scale to create standardised compositions; combining their knowledge of biology, they gain an understanding of local produce; and they utilise AI to search for materials and refine their creative ideas, thereby empowering the creation of traditional culture through technology. Each illustration is a world unto itself; every stroke reflects meticulous craftsmanship. The philosophy of holistic education flourishes through interdisciplinary integration.

A single sheet of paper unfolds the landscape; with their own two hands, the students ‘craft’ their homeland. During the holidays, the pupils gathered materials and put great thought into their designs—whether through hand-drawing, collage, painting or clay modelling—condensing the distinctive cultures of Anhui and the motherland into a series of unique maps. The crispy, savoury aroma of Northeastern-style pot-roasted pork and the crisp, golden texture of Huangshan flatbreads spring to life on the page; the whitewashed walls and black-tiled roofs of Huizhou-style horse-head walls exude rustic elegance; the singing, recitation, acting and martial arts of Huangmei Opera and Peking Opera are vivid and dynamic; whilst intangible cultural heritage elements such as Xuan paper, Huizhou ink and paper-cutting are richly and fully represented. The cuisine is fragrant, the architecture has its own charm, the opera resounds with its melodies, and the intangible cultural heritage possesses a soul of its own.

Moving from textbook knowledge to real-world experience, the students have broken free from rigid learning patterns, thereby broadening their horizons. From conceptualisation and layout to illustration and annotation, every step is a practical exercise and every stroke an act of creation; their practical skills and aesthetic sensibilities have flourished imperceptibly. Through this immersive creative process, they have come to understand the cultural heritage of the Jianghuai region, experienced the vastness of its mountains and rivers, and felt a sense of patriotism take root in their hearts like a seed.

This special assignment serves as a vivid illustration of the school’s people-centred educational philosophy: it enables pupils to experience the splendour of our prosperous era through hands-on creation and to pass on traditional culture through the movements of their fingers, thereby not only strengthening their subject-specific literacy but also deepening their sincere love for their country and hometown. In the future, the school will continue to innovate distinctive teaching activities, empowering pupils’ growth through diverse practical experiences, so that every SUIS-HF pupil may carry their homeland in their hearts, gaze upon the starry heavens, face the future with confidence, and grow steadily towards greater heights.
