Louis Pasteur was born in Dole,France on December 27,1822.His family was poor, and during
his early education Pasteur was an ordinary student who enjoyed art and singing. However, when Pasteur
was exposed to science as a teenager,he knew he found his career.
In 1848,Pasteur went to college to become a science teacher. He then became a chemistry professor
at the University of Strasbourg. He got married in 1849 and had five children. However, three died
young from typhoid fever(伤寒).It was the deaths of his children that drove Pasteur to investigate
infectious diseases in order to find a cure.
During Pasteur's time, people believed that bacteria (细菌) appeared due to "spontaneous generation"
(自然发生).They thought that the bacteria just appeared out of nowhere.Pasteur carried out experiments
to see if this was true.Through his experiments he proved that bacteria were living things that came from
other living things. They didn't just spontaneously appear. This was a major discovery in the study of
biology and earned Pasteur the title of Father of Microbiology.
As Pasteur learnt more about bacteria,he began to think they may be the cause of diseases in
humans. When the French silk market was threatened by a disease to silkworms (蚕),Pasteur decided to
investigate. He discovered that this disease was caused by bacteria.By killing them from the silkworm
farms,he was able to cease the disease and save the French silk business.

without giving them a second chance.

school for a man with your salary. ”
“I know, sir. But he likes it so much! He’s a star trackman(田径运动员)and the best boxer in the

“We’ve got to close your department, Watson. But you’ll take over a new job in another department. It
means long hours---maybe more pay. Now get out. You’re here for life. ”
Watson got out, with surprise in his face. Then the Boss took a letter from the top drawer of his desk.
It was Herbie’s last letter from Riverside School---written a few days before he died. He had read it over
and over again with sick pain. The letter read:
I can’t say the boys here are any nicer to me than the others were. I guess it’s the same everywhere

department here. And there’s one boy here who is really great. He’s a track star and boxing champ and just
tops in chemistry. The boys call him Champ. He made them stop throwing my books around. And he
knocked a boy down who hit me. He is the best friend I ever had. Dad, when I grow up, I want to do
something for Champ. Something big---that he won’t even know about.

“ Snowplow (扫雪机) parenting” is the newest parenting style that can include parents booking
their adult children haircuts, calling their college kids to wake them up so that they don’t sleep through a
test, and even calling their kids’ employers.
“‘Helicopter (直升机)parenting’ means monitoring their kids’ every activity, which is out of date.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂” Claire Cain Miller and Jonah Engel Bromwich wrote in The New York Times. “Some rich mothers and
fathers now are more like snowplows: clearing any problems in their children’s path to success so that
they don’t have to meet failure or lose opportunities. ” There is a mother who started a charity in her son’s
name to try to raise his chances of being accepted to the college. One set of parents spent years helping
their daughter avoid foods with sauce, which she didn’t like. Once she got to college, she had problems
with the food in her school because it was all covered in sauce.
A survey says that three-quarters of parents of children between the ages of 18 and 28 ask for doctor
visits or haircuts for their children, and 11% say they would call their kids’ bosses whether their children
are having an issue at work.
As reported, wealthy parents try to get their children into top colleges by giving a large amount of
money to a school, such as paying for a building. This parenting has become the most popular way to raise
children, whatever the income, education, or race is.

Could the device, a smartphone or a PC, which you’re using affects the moral decisions you make
when using it? To test it, researchers presented multiple dilemmas to a sample set of 1,010 people. The
participants were assigned a device at random.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂One case of the questions participants were asked is the classic “trolley(有轨电车) problem”: A
runaway trolley is headed towards five people tied up on a set of train tracks. You can do nothing, resulting
in the deaths of the five people, or push a man off a bridge, which will stop the trolley. The practical
response is to kill one man to save five lives, which 33.5 percent of smartphone users chose, compared to
22.3 percent of PC users.
“What we found in our study is that when people used a smartphone to view classic moral problems,
they were more likely to make more unemotional, reasonable decisions
when presented with a highly emotional dilemma,” Dr Albert Barque-Duran, the lead author of the study,
told City, University of London. “This could be due to the increased time pressure often present with
smartphones and also the increased psychological distance which can occur when we use such devices
compared to PCs.”
As for why the researchers started this study, Dr Barque-Duran noted, “Due to the fact that our social
lives, work and even shopping take place online, it is important to think about how the contexts where we
typically face moral decisions and are asked to engage in moral behaviour have changed, and the impact
this could have on hundreds of millions of people who use such devices daily.” It’s clear that we need more
research on how our devices affect our moral decision making because we’re using screens at an ever
increasing rate.
9. Why did the author mention the “trolley problem”?
A. To introduce a difficult problem to readers.
B. To introduce the aim of carrying out the study.
C. To show an example of the questions in the study.
D. To show the difficulty in dealing with dilemmas.
解析:推理判断题。根据文章第二段“One case of the questions participants were asked is the classic
‘trolley problem’...”可以推断出,作者提及有轨电车的问题,只是展示了研究问题中的一个例子。故选
C。
答案:C
10. How do the smartphone users of the study behave in dealing with emotional dilemmas?
A. Calmly. B. Cruelly.
C. Hesitantly. D. Enthusiastically.

Dear Tony,
I’m glad to learn you’re coming to my school next week as an international exchange student. You
are interested in how we typically show respect for our teachers and here are something detailed.
Firstly, it is on September 10th every year that all teachers and students gather in the school hall to
celebrate Teachers’ Day, where by tradition Top Ten Teachers of the Year are selected to receive
meaningful awards. Student representatives send gifts such as bunches of flowers, postcards to show our
sincere gratitude and best wishes to our teachers. What’s more, we greet our teachers respectfully wherever
and whenever we meet. Besides, we often take turns to help clean and tidy the teachers’ office voluntarily.
I hope you’ll have a wonderful experience in our school.
Yours,
Li Hua

In 1989,fresh out of high school,I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college
started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an

engineering,so that I was left with medicine or business.I couldn't decide.
My uncle suggested that I do a work placement(实习)to experience it for a month in an
international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that,I could make a decision. It seemed
like a good idea.
I was accepted for a month's placement at a foreign bank in Karachi.I got a feel for how the world of
finance functioned , made new friends , and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going work
surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi .The
experience couldn't have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started
early (at 7 am,compared to 9 am at the bank),and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls!
This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere,
better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement, but the studying and training
were difficult. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital,I was driving home after an especially busy night. In front
of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top.As the driver weaved through(穿梭)
traffic,I could see the boys shaking from side to side.
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly,a boy fell off the back of the bus.

1.Having seen a boy fall off the back of the bus, what would the author do?
2.After receiving gratitude from the boy's family, how did the author feel?
3.At last, the author decided on his career path through the experience.
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly,a boy fell off the back of the bus.He hit the road face down and rolled over.He lay still
in the middle of the road as the bus sped away.None of the cars behind stopped.Thinking that he could
die in a matter of minutes,I stopped my car and carefully examined the boy. With the help of some
passers-by,I lifted the unconscious boy into the car and raced back to the hospital. Then his family was
contacted, and he was wheeled into emergency surgery.I drove home, exhausted but happy.
Paragraph 2:
The next day, when I went to the hospital to see the boy,all his family got up,with grateful smiles
on their faces. What a feeling it was to help save the life of another person! I spent the rest of the day in a
stale of the most fabulous mood I bad ever experienced.Driving home that evening,I decided on my
career path. Two months of placements could not do what 30 minutes' helping an accident victim had
done for me.This experience taught me that at Limes, the decisions are made for you—and that
whatever happens is always for the best.
