If you’re walking through Boston during a downpour,you might see a poem appear before your eyes.
Titled “Raining Poetry”,this art installation was a collaboration,which needs efforts between the
nonprofit Mass Poetry and the city of Boston.The first poems were installed to honour the start of National
Poetry Month.Several more were added since then.The poems are invisible during dry and sunny
weather,but they appear like magic once raindrops start falling from the sky.
“We want to bring poetry to the people,” said Sara Siegel,program director for Mass Poetry.The
poems were selected by Danielle Legros Georges,Boston’s poet laureate(桂冠诗人).Scattered throughout
the city,Georges selected the poems mainly based on their relationship to Boston.Another factor was their
general themes of water and rain.
The poems were installed by members of the Mayor’s Mural Crew,an organization that introduces
young artists to the process of creating public art.The poems can be fixed to the sidewalk in minutes.It will
wear away in six to eight weeks.However,the city of Boston and Mass Poetry plan on carpeting city
sidewalks with more poems.“It’s a public art project,as the poems are and will be installed in public sites in
Boston,and meant for everyone,” Georges said.“I think this is a wonderful way to bring poetry to the
people.”
The poems appear throughout the city.While all of the poems currently installed are written in
English,Siegel hopes to add new ones in the many languages.“Our hope is in the next two years everyone

Li Bai is regarded as the greatest romantic poet of the Tang Dynasty and a representative of the High
Tang culture, combination of realistic Northern culture represented by Confucian (儒家的) philosophy
and romantic Southern culture represented by Taoist philosophy. But he could neither realize his Confucian
ideal to serve the country nor find spiritual freedom in Taoism (道教), so he could only chant poetry and
drink wine to drown his sorrow as described by Du Fu in Eight Immortal Drinkers. Here we see the tragedy
(悲剧) of a genuine staying lonely on earth like an angel fallen from Heaven. His poetry is marked by male
greatness in the Waterfall in Mount Lu Viewed from Afar, in which we see the mountain cloud from
down below and the Silver River, Chinese name for the Milky Way, fall from on high, and heaven and
earth seem to merge into one, that is the Chinese way of communion with nature. In his poetry, we can
find his love of nature, of freedom, of the people, of his friends, in short, of truth, good and beauty.
Li Bai is best known for the extraordinary imagination and striking Taoist imagery in his poetry, as
well as for his great love for liquor. Like Du Fu, he spent much of his life travelling, although in his case it
was because his wealth allowed him to, rather than because his poverty forced him. He is said to have
drowned in the Yangtze River, having fallen from his boat while drunkenly trying to embrace (拥抱) the
reflection of the moon.

A poem is defined as a composition written in verse.Poems rely heavily on imagery,precise word
choice,and metaphor(隐喻),and may take either the form of measures consisting of patterns of stresses or of
patterns of different-length syllables.But they don’t necessarily make use of rhyme.Poetry appears earlier
than other forms of literature;however one cannot readily tell the characteristics of early poetry.Typically,as
a form of literature,poetry makes great use of the forms of the words it uses.That is to say,it focuses on the
features of the written or spoken word,rather than on their meaning.
The play,or drama,is another classical literary form that has continued to develop over the years.It
generally consists chiefly of a dialogue between characters and is usually for theatrical performances rather
than for reading.During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries,opera developed as a combination of
poetry,drama,and music.
An essay consists of a discussion of a topic from an author’s personal point of view.The word “essay”
in English is from the French word meaning “attempt”.In this sense,it could be said to mean the author’s
attempt to make others accept their view.
Prose consists of writing that does not stick to any particular formal structures.Prose writing can take
beautiful forms,but not because of the forms of words it uses.
A novel consists simply of a long story written in prose,yet this form has only developed
comparatively recently.Early novels in Europe did not,at the time,count as significant literature,perhaps
because “mere” prose writing seemed easy and unimportant.It has become clear,however,that prose writing
can provide pleasure to those readers even though it doesn’t stick to poetic forms.

Dust storms don't just happen in the middle of the desert. They happen in any dry area where loose
dirt can easily be picked up. The sand blown into the air by the wind usually falls back down to the ground

only last for a few minutes but storms usually leave serious car accidents behind. If you are in a car during
a dust storm，remind the driver to pull over and turn off the headlights.
In mild (轻微的) dust storms，it's still impossible to walk around although you wouldn't want to. You
can't see anything because of the dust particles flying around. It's not just the dust you want to avoid. The
wind carrying the dust will leave things as if they were just hit by a tornado. The best thing to do is find a
safe place in a building.

I was a single mother of four children, working at a lowpaid job. Money was always tight, but we had
a roof over our heads, food on the table, and clothes on our backs. I always told myself to be brave and
strong, just for my four children. I hoped all my efforts would be worthwhile, as long as my children could
grow up healthily. Every New Year's Day we drove downtown to enjoy a special dinner, but the big
excitement for the kids was the fun of shopping at the mall. This was a tradition of my family, so they all
looked forward to the coming of the day. They talked and planned for weeks ahead of time, asking each
other what they wanted for New Year's Day.
The big day arrived and we started out early. I gave each of the four kids a twentydollar bill and asked
them to search for gifts. Then everyone scattered (散开) with the bill. I sat at a table in a cafe waiting for
my children and enjoying an instant of silence. It must be a happy day.
Back in the car driving home, everyone was excited about the day, laughing and asking each other
about what they had bought. I noticed Ginger, my younger daughter had only one small and flat bag with
her. I could see enough through the plastic bag to tell that she had bought candy bars—fiftycent candy bars!
What did she do with that twentydollar bill I had given her? I was angry. After getting home, I called her
into my bedroom and closed the door. I couldn't hold back my anger and shouted at her, “What about the
rest of the money? No one would be convinced all these candies are worth 20 dollars. What did you do with
the rest of the money？”
