When I first began running in high school on the track team, it made sense to carefully clock every mile and
push myself to race for personal bests. But as I changed from running for sport to running for amusement as an
adult, I found that tracking my workouts often just ended with frustration. And it wasn't until my watch battery
died several years ago that I first experienced the sense of calm that came with running for the pure joy of it. I
never replaced the watch battery, and that might not be a bad thing for my fitness goals.
This is the idea of unplugged (不插电的) running, which is gaining steam in the fitness community. And re-
cent research has shown that getting rid of your running watch, especially if it’s a smartwatch or fitness tracker,
could actually improve your workout — or at least your enjoyment of running.
“People used to have an interest in their sport and get enjoyment out of the sport, but now that's switching to
the data,” said Eoin Whelan, a senior lecturer at the National University of Ireland Galway. “They will compare
themselves to people who are better than them, who are running faster or running longer. And in the end we know
that makes them feel bad. ”
Whelan also noted that people who are very dependent on smart watches or fitness trackers are more likely to
skip their workouts if the batteries on their tracking devices are dead.
In addition, there is evidence that running watch-free is beneficial for more than just the casual jogger.
Some professionals also have had success with leaving their watches at home. Welsh runner Steve Jones famously
set a world record at the 1984 Chicago Marathon without wearing a watch. More recently, Olympic marathoner
Trevor Hofbauer made headlines for winning the 2019 Canadian Marathon Championships without a watch.
“If you have too much information being fed to you in real time, it can kind of get in your head,” Hofbauer
said. “For me, the simpler, the better.”

remote sensor monitoring was not available, agricultural technicians had no choice but to go for field

has been applied in agricultural production in China, allowing agricultural technicians to analyze the
movements of insect pests and evaluate plant diseases and insect pests by monitoring remotely the vege-

In the Internet era, information technology has made the processing of massive data possible and
created wider and more convenient platforms for biodiversity conservation in China, including Chinese
Virtual Herbarium, Plant Photo Bank of China, and National Animal Collection Resource Center. The
emergence of databases and digital programs in recent years is driving China to turn around its seriously
threatened biodiversity.
From the collection and storage of information to the management and analysis of resources, the con-

Living in a city is a well-known risk factor for developing a mental disorder, while living close to nature is
largely beneficial for mental health and the brain. A central brain region, the amygdala (大脑杏仁核) involved in
stress processing, has been shown to be less activated during stress in people living in rural areas, compared to

To achieve causal evidence, the researchers from the group examined brain activity in regions involved in
stress processing in 63 healthy volunteers before and after a one-hour walk in Grunewald forest or a shopping
street with traffic in Berlin. The results revealed that activity in the amygdala decreased after the walk in nature,
suggesting that nature elicits beneficial effects on brain regions related to stress.
“The results support the previously assumed positive relationship between nature and brain health, but this is
the first study to prove the causal link. Interestingly, the brain activity after the urban walk in these regions re-
mained stable and showed no increases, which argues against a commonly held view that urban exposure causes
additional stress,” explains Simone Kühn, head of the group.
The authors show that nature has a positive impact on brain regions involved in stress processing and that it
can already be observed after a one-hour walk. This contributes to the understanding of how our physical living
environment affects brain and mental health. Even a short exposure to nature decreases amygdala activity, sug-
gesting that a walk in nature could serve as a preventive measure against developing mental health problems and
reducing the potentially disadvantageous impact of the city on the brain.
In order to investigate beneficial effects of nature in different populations and age groups, the researchers are
currently working on a study examining how a one-hour walk in natural versus urban environments impacts stress
in mothers and their babies.

There I was surprised to see Brigitte, who was terrified of water, dive into the pool. Then to my hor-
ror, I caught sight of Forrest's yellow sleeper. Brigitte was bravely doing her best to keep him
afloat by holding on to his sleeper with her mouth. At the same time, she was desperately trying to
swim to the shallow end. Only then did I realize that Forrest had somehow opened the door, wan-
dered out and fallen into the pool. In a split second, I dove in, lifted my precious baby out and carried

10. 【原文】M: I started my own company, CyberEdit, when I was a freshman. Most students have to write essays,
and I aimed to provide computer editing services for them. During one summer vacation, I worked for an Internet
company and in the evening, I spent another four hours working on my website. It’s not easy to develop a business. If
you hope to be financially independent, you must do something while you are young and you can work long hours.
For a long time, I was editing nearly ten documents a night. I spent fifty hours a week doing this. It was hard. Then I
hired my first four employees, and I never edited a single document again. The next year, I turned down my summer
job at a big investment bank and spent the vacation expanding CyberEdit. In December, Wired magazine contacted
me and asked me to write an article about my life. After the article appeared in March, interested investors began to
contact me. In June, one of them decided to invest a large sum of money in the company. So the Wired article brought
me over a million dollars in funding! More than anything else, good publicity helps a new business attract investors
and customers. Investors came to me, not because I was making money and employing fifty college students, but be-
cause they read about it in Wired magazine, and saw it on ABC World News Tonight. My advice to young people who
consider starting a company is:Do it now! Don’t delay starting it until you’ve finished school or had some“real-world
