When a woman was talkative while checking out at a Dollar General, her cashier, Emily
Dunean didn’t think much of it. But she stayed attentive as the 85-year-old told her about herself.
A man behind her in line noticed what was happening, too.

himself captivated by what the elderly woman said once he stopped to listen.

local elementary school.

Scientists have long sought to prevent sharp memories from dulling with age, but the
problem is hard to solve. New research suggests Virtual Reality (VR) might help older people
recall facts and events based on specific details.
The study involved 42 healthy older adults from the San Francisco Bay Area. Half spent a
dozen hours over four weeks playing a virtual-reality game called Labyrinth. They wore headsets
and walked in place, wandering virtual neighborhoods while completing missions. The other half,
in the control group, used computers to play games that did not require navigating (导 航 ) or
recalling details. After 15 sessions, the latter performed much the same as before on a long-term
memory test based on picking out objects they had seen about an hour earlier. But the Labyrinth
players’ scores rose, and they were less frequently tricked by objects that were similar to ones they
had viewed.
“The improvement brought them back up to the level of another group of younger adults who
did the same memory tests,” said cognitive neuroscientist Peter Wais of the University of
California, San Francisco. He and his colleagues designed the VR game, which they say likely
stimulates (刺激) the hippocampus—— a brain area that is important for long-term memory. The
team did not observe improvement on two other tests, which measured autobiographical memory
(自传体记忆) and spatial memory capability.
“It would be great to actually follow people over time and see what this type of game does
for long-term memory,” said Meredith Thompson, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology
education researcher. Daniel Simons, a cognitive psychologist, said that testing three measures,
instead of just one, would increase the possibility of finding an improvement. And it remains
unclear how test performance in a laboratory setting might translate to real-world situations.
Simons notes, “The outcome needs to be repeated, ideally with a much larger group, before it is
treated as a strong finding.”
Wais’s team is now investigating how long the observed effects last and which elements of
the training have the most impact.

Salt was so valuable in ancient Rome that soldiers were sometimes paid with it. In fact, the
4word salary comes from the Latin word sal, for salt. When a soldier was doing an awful job, his
paycheck might be cut, which is how we got the expression “not worth his salt.” Salt can still he
valuable today. Amethyst Bamboo 9x salt, which rings up at &398 a pound, may be the most
expensive in the world. This pricey stuff takes a lot of time to produce — it’s roasted nine times
inside a bamboo pole at temperatures over 1,400 degrees F.
Historically, salt’s value came from its ability to preserve food. Venice, Italy, may be famous
for its canals now, but salt imports helped its rise as an important trade power by the end of the
13th century. Salt also took on a great deal of symbolic value, like “old salt” referring to an
experienced sailor. Salt is mentioned so many times in the Bible. For instance, “the salt of the
earth” is used to describe a person who is dependable; “a covenant of salt” means a firm promise.
Most people know about the health risks associated with sodium (钠 ), but reducing your
intake isn’t always easy. Even foods that don’t taste salty may contain it. If you are looking for
sodium-free flavoring, try garlic, pepper, rosemary and other spices or herbs.
Still, we all need at least some salt. It promotes the transport of nutrients and oxygen, allows
nerves to send messages, and helps our muscle work. The average adult’s body contains about 250
grams of sodium.
Consumption of too much salt can be deadly. For older folks especially, a heavy hand with
the saltshaker may raise blood pressure, causing hypertension and hurt the head. A study of 975
people between the ages of 60 to 80 and with high blood pressure found that reducing sodium in
their diets was associated with lower risk of headache.
