试卷 第 3 页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司There’s another universe not far from land. It lacks buildings, trees, cars, cellphones and the Internet.
Seemingly limitless water extends uninterruptedly in all directions. Civilization goes away, along with any sign of
humanity. And it is why I’m really into sailing. I grew up around boats. My father liked sailing and built them. My
older sister and I were stuffed into a car nearly every summer weekend until my late teens to make the trip from
northeast Indiana to the south shore of Lake Erie in Ohio, where Talisman built by my father waited patiently
through the week.
As a kid, I read the adventures of Robin Lee Graham, a traveller exploring the sea alone, in the pages of
National Geographic and, later, in Graham's book, Dove. However, it wasn't until about 20 years ago, well into
my adulthood, that I took up sailing in a serious way. I've made voyages in fair stormy and weather, on my own
boats and those of my friends, and ranging from nearshore day sails to blue-water passages.
Still, I've made plenty of mistakes. While living in Asia, a sailing friend and I set off across the South China
Sea and intended to get to Thailand, only to be pushed by a late-season typhoon that forced us to make landfall in
Vietnam, glad to be alive.
Years later, my wife and I lived aboard our 37-foot ship, Symbiosis, while we saved enough to take a two-year
leave from our jobs to journey down the U.S. Atlantic coast and through the Bahamas and the Caribbean. We
visited many places that never see ships or airplanes and that are nearly impossible to reach anyway other than at
the helm(舵柄) of a small boat. But boats are expensive and time-consuming. After returning from the Caribbean a
few years ago, we decided to sell Symbiosis, resolving instead to sail only “other people's boats”. It didn't last,
though. A few months ago, we found a good deal on a smaller sailboat—easier to maintain but still capable of some
short offshore journeys. I think we'll name her Talisman.
24.What would the author do on summer weekends as a kid?
A.He would help his father build Talisman.
B.He would sail with his father and his sister.
C.He would explore northeast Indiana in a car.
D.He would bring human civilization to sailing.
25.What can we learn about the book Dove?
A.It has something to do with exploring the sea.
B.It was published in National Geographic.
C.It is the most famous work by Graham.
D.It was an inspiration for the author's writing.
26.Why did the author sell his ship Symbiosis?
A.It didn’t function well. B.He couldn’t afford to maintain it.
C.He found a better one to replace it. D.It was damaged seriously during a storm.
27.What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A.To show his passion for sailing boats.
B.To stress the influence of adventures on him.

学科网(北京)股份有限公司C.To discuss the problems of sailing on the sea.
D.To share his success in exploring the world.

We have long been attracted by quick solutions that could increase our intelligence. Today, people’s hopes lie
in brain training apps, some of which claim to result in “smarter minds”. But is this quick solution all it is said to
be?
There are plenty of brain training apps, but they all share the same characteristics: they turn mental exercises
like simple arithmetic (算术), memory tests and logic and pattern-matching problems into quick games. Some apps
tell us that the more you play these mini-games, the smarter you will get. It is really a big promise.
Many of the apps say they are based on “science”, a claim I found surprising as a former neuroscientist (神经
系统科学家). The concept that increasing intelligence would be as simple as practicing a few mini-games every
day flies in the face of what we have discovered about how humans think and learn.
After surveying thousands of users across a wide variety of apps, researchers at Western University in Canada
discovered that brain training had no great effect on cognitive (认知的) functioning in the real world. The positive
effects that have been found are limited to the very specific mini-games and tasks that users are trained on, such as
the ability to memorize lists of words or numbers, or perform mental arithmetic, with little benefit to other skills.
If you are expecting them to improve your ability to write a novel or make a complex computer program, I am
afraid you will want to look elsewhere. Puzzle video games such as “Baba Is You” and “Return of the Obra Dinn”,
see players apply their skill at logic, memory and concentration in a far more complex way than any brain training
mini-game.
28.What does the author say about brain training apps?
A.They have scientific support. B.They work in the form of games.
C.They require problem-solving skills. D.They are based on complex arithmetic.
29.What does the underlined part “flies in the face of” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Goes into details of. B.Takes advantage of.
C.Goes against. D.Comes from.
30.Which best describes the effects that brain training apps have on memory?
A.Limited. B.Indirect. C.Damaging. D.Far-reaching.
31.What is the author’s attitude to “Baba Is You”?
A.Doubtful. B.Intolerant. C.Uninterested. D.Favorable.

Online eating shows, or Mukbang, were originated in South Korea and have gained popularity globally. Many
hosts of such shows become popular for their ability to eat large amounts of food. However, these shows have also
received criticism for their waste of food. While some hosts actually do consume the amount of food shown, others
may be faking it. On Aug 12, CCTV exposed several Chinese hosts who were eating large amounts of food while
on camera, but actually later threw it away.
To discourage this practice, many video and live streaming platforms, including Douyin, Kuaishou and
试卷 第 5 页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司Bilibili, have removed videos that show food waste, and have promoted messages to “avoid food waste and eat
reasonably”.
In June 2020, the United Nations warned that the world is on the verge of the worst food crisis in 50 years.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, about a third of the world’s food—1.3
billion tons—is wasted every year. In China alone, 50 million tons of food ends up in landfills every year,
according to Beijing News.
Recently, campaigns against food waste have been further promoted. In August, President Xi Jinping stressed
the need for safeguarding food security and avoiding food waste.
According to China Daily, restaurants and catering associations in more than 18 provinces and all 4 municipal
cities have issued guidelines to control food waste.
In Shaanxi province, local restaurants have been asked to serve half portions to avoid waste. The Wuhan
Catering Association proposed that restaurants adopt the “N-1 mode”. For example, a group of 10 diners should
only order enough for nine people at first. More food is only brought to the table if required.
In addition, a nationwide “Clear Your Plate” campaign has been launched online. Users of Sina Weibo are
encouraged to share photos or videos of empty plates after finishing their meals.
32.Which of the following best explains the word “faking” underlined in paragraph 1?
A.Criticizing. B.Pretending.
C.Hating. D.Copying.
33.Why have many video and live streaming platforms removed some online eating shows?
A.Because hosts of these shows become too popular.
B.Because CCTV asks them to get rid of the shows of wasting food.
C.Because they don’t want to inspire the practice of wasting food.
D.Because the world is on the verge of the worst food crisis in 50 years.
34.Which of the following campaigns has been promoted to fight against food waste?
A.Guidelines to control food waste have been issued all over the country.
B.It’s been required that restaurants in Shaanxi give a smaller portion of food.
C.In Wuhan, all the restaurants have adopted the “N-1 mode”.
D.A nationwide “Clear Your Plate” campaign has been launched by the government.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Online eating shows. B.Campaigns against waste.
C.Stopping food waste. D.Clear your plate.

It had been a year since Susan, an attractive young woman of 34, became blind and she was suddenly thrown
into a world of darkness, anger, frustration and self- pity. And all she had to depend on was her husband, Mark.
Mark, an Air Force officer, loved Susan with all his heart and he was determined to help his wife gain the
strength and confidence she needed to become independent again.
Finally, Susan felt ready to return to her job, but how would she get there? Mark volunteered to drive her to
work each day, even though they worked at opposite ends of the city.
At first, this comforted Susan. Soon, however, Mark decided that Susan had to start taking the bus again on
her own. But she was still so fragile(脆弱的), so angry - how would she react?
Just as he predicted, Susan was horrified at the idea of taking the bus alone . "How am I supposed to know
where I am going? I feel like you're abandoning me." she responded bitterly.
Mark's heart broke to hear these words, but he knew what had to be done. He promised Susan that he would
ride the bus with her, for as long as it took, until she got the hang of it.
For two solid weeks, Mark, in military uniform and all, accompanied Susan to and from work each day. He
taught her everything to adapt to her new environment, including befriending the bus drivers who could watch out
for her, and save her a seat.
Finally, Susan decided to try the trip on her own. Monday morning arrived, she said good-bye to Mark, and for
the first time, they went their separate ways. Before leaving, Mark held Susan into his arms and told her to be
confident and try to imagine that he was always with her.
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday... Each day on her own went perfectly, but Susan had never felt
better. She was just doing it!
On Friday morning, as she was paying the fare to get off the bus to her office as usual , the driver said, "Young
lady, I sure do envy(嫉妒,羡慕) you."
Surprised and curious, she asked the driver, "Why do you say that you envy me?"

we can have fun during Chinese festivals. Still others consider various competitions should be held at times, which
provides more chances for the citizens to recite Chinese poems and practice calligraphy.
In my view, it is high time that we spared no effort to protect the traditional Chinese cultures. Otherwise we
will regret one day.
