What if they can enlist students as part of the solution, too? A rural Ohio high school has done just that. At Claymont High School in Uhrichsville, Ohio, a group of about 21 high schoolers are trained in mental health first aid. They’ve taken several courses over six weeks to learn how to help their peers who are going through a difficult time. Maggie Lesiecki, a sophomore, said she’s learned how to talk to peers who are having mental health issues, without making them feel bad about it. “Ask them how they are and listen to them ― just be a friend and give them someone to talk to,” she said. The students, who are in grades 10 to 12, are part of a larger program called Peers Uplifting Peers, or P.U.P., which helps to break down the stigma (耻辱,污名) around mental health and wellness and normalize having conversations about both and seeking help when necessary. They’re trained as dog handlers for the district’s two therapy dogs ― another student-led wellness initiative (措施). The students take the dogs to classes to help ease the anxieties of those who may be nervous about giving a speech ― or help younger students gain the confidence to read. “With this training we are able to help our friends when they are experiencing problems in their lives,” said Cora Dotts, a freshman. The students said the program has also helped them develop coping skills for themselves ― like taking social media breaks, finding trusted peers to talk to when they are struggling, and spending time on hobbies, like swimming, reading, gardening, and watching television. “I have a circle of support,” Cora said. “Personally, I love to read, listen to music, and hang out with my dogs, rabbits, and horses.” Britton, a behavioral health field specialist, said more districts are reaching out to her for training. But often, it’ s still only after a tragedy happens. “I always tell them we can’t go back; we can only go forward, and that’s what we’ll do ― go forward,” she said. 24. What do we know about Maggie Lesiecki? A. She went through a difficult time. B. She started the P.U.P. program. C. She is a trainer in mental health first aid. D. She gives peers mental health support. 25. Why do students take the therapy dogs to classes according to the text? A. To let the dogs play with younger students. B. To train the dogs better in different environments. C. To help students who have anxiety or lack confidence. D. To show off the cute dogs to their classmates. 26. What additional benefits have the students reported from being part of the program? A. Broadened social network. B. Increased popularity among peers. C. Cultivation of more hobbies. D. Development of coping skills for themselves. 27. What does the text mainly talk about? A. The training courses for high school students in mental health first aid. B. The role of therapy dogs in helping students with mental health issues. C. The importance of mental health support for students in Ohio’s high schools. D. A school’s innovative approach to involving students in mental health support. 24. D 25. C 26. D 27. Leading the trend is TikTok. The app hopes to bring to the West a business model that erases the line between shopping and entertainment. TikTok Shop, an e-commerce feature added to the app in Britain in 2021 and America in 2023, lets users scroll (浏览) through posts about products, watch live shopping events and buy items with just a few clicks. Although TikTok Shop is growing fast, making social commerce as widespread in the West as it is in China will not be straightforward. Meta has made various attempts to embed e-commerce into Facebook and Instagram without gaining much success. For TikTok Shop to continue expanding, it will need to overcome hesitancy from consumers, brands and the influencers that connect them. In China, the distinction between shopping and entertainment has already grown fuzzy. In the West, however, shoppers have been slower to accept social media as a place to buy stuff. In a recent survey, 62% thought social media was a helpful place to learn about new products, but 74% still preferred to buy things on traditional e-commerce sites. It doesn’t help that the products currently sold on social media tend to be cheap impulse (冲动的) purchases, from snacks to silly toys. TikTok Shop is designed to encourage impulse shopping; when products are discounted, for instance, a clock is sometimes displayed with a countdown to the end of the sale. Another recent survey found that more than half of Americans who shopped on social media regretted their purchase. Plenty of brands have chosen social media as a place to advertise their products, often with the help of influencers. Jack Timpany, a marketing executive at L’Oreal, says that it is a useful way to get new products in front of consumers. “It’s pretty hard to do that on your traditional e-commerce channels where you’re limited by what people put in the search bar,” he says. “It’s all about discovery,” says Jan Wilk, head of operations for TikTok Shop in Britain. 28. Which of the following is a challenge that TikTok faces? A. Consumers doubt the quality of products on the platform. B. Competition from Facebook and Instagram is too intense (激烈的). C. The app lacks regulations on protecting users’ data privacy. D. Social commerce is not appealing enough to western users. 29. What does the underlined word “fuzzy” mean in Paragraph 3? A. Obvious. B. Unclear. C. Measurable. D. Insignificant. 30. What does the author imply in Paragraph 4? A. TikTok Shop should change its marketing strategy. B. Purchases on TikTok Shop are all discounted items. C. Consumers should stop buying products on TikTok. D. Social media is not suitable for advertising products. 31. Which of the following is a benefit of social media compared to traditional channels? A. It’s more efficient in data feedback analysis. B. It`s more flexible for searching and discovering new products. C. It’s more effective for promoting new products. D. It’s more economical for advertising and selling new products. D 29. B 30. A 31. 根据文章第二段“Although TikTok Shop is growing fast, making social commerce as widespread in the West as it is in China will not be straightforward. Meta has made various attempts to embed e-commerce into Facebook and Instagram without gaining much success. For TikTok Shop to continue expanding, it will need to overcome hesitancy from consumers, brands and the influencers that connect them.(尽管 TikTok Shop 发展迅速, 但要让社交商务在西方像在中国一样普及并不容易。Meta 已经尝试了各种方法将电子商务嵌入 Facebook 和 Instagram,但没有取得太大成功。为了让 TikTok Shop 继续扩张,它需要克服消费者、品牌和连接他们的影 响者的犹豫)”可知,TikTok 在西方市场面临的一个挑战是社交商务对西方用户来说不够吸引人。故选 D 项。 【29 题详解】 词句猜测题。根据文章第三段“In China, the distinction between shopping and entertainment has already grown fuzzy. In the West, however, shoppers have been slower to accept social media as a place to buy stuff.(在中国,购 第 12页/共 28页物和娱乐之间的界限已经变得 fuzzy。然而,在西方,购物者接受社交媒体作为购物场所的速度较慢)”可知, 上下文为对比关系,西方购物者接受社交媒体作为购物场所的速度较慢,他们把购物和娱乐区分开;而在 中国,购物和娱乐之间的极限已经变得模糊,人们接受在抖音等社交平台购物。由此可以推测出,fuzzy 意 为“模糊的”,与 unclear 意思相近。故选 B 项。 【30 题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第四段“It doesn’t help that the products currently sold on social media tend to be cheap impulse (冲动的) purchases, from snacks to silly toys. TikTok Shop is designed to encourage impulse shopping; when products are discounted, for instance, a clock is sometimes displayed with a countdown to the end of the sale. Another recent survey found that more than half of Americans who shopped on social media regretted their purchase.(目前社交媒体上销售的产品往往是廉价的冲动购买,从零食到愚蠢的玩具,这并没有帮助。TikTok Shop 的设计就是为了鼓励冲动购物;例如,当产品打折时,有时会显示一个倒计时钟,直到销售结束。最 近的一项调查发现,超过一半在社交媒体上购物的美国人后悔了自己的购买)”可知,作者在第四段中暗示 TikTok Shop 应该改变其营销策略,因为目前社交媒体上销售的产品往往是廉价的冲动购买,且超过一半在 社交媒体上购物的美国人后悔了自己的购买。故选 A 项。 根据文章最后一段“Plenty of brands have chosen social media as a place to advertise their products, often with the help of influencers. Jack Timpany, a marketing executive at L’Oreal, says that it is a useful way to get new products in front of consumers. "It's pretty hard to do that on your traditional e-commerce channels where you’re limited by what people put in the search bar," he says.(许多品牌选择社交媒体作为宣传其产品的 地方,通常是在影响者的帮助下。欧莱雅营销主管 Jack Timpany 表示,这是将新产品推向消费者面前的一 种有用方式。他说:“在传统的电子商务渠道上很难做到这一点,因为你的选择受到人们在搜索栏中输入内 容的限制。”)”可知,与传统渠道相比,社交媒体在推广新产品方面更有效。故选 C 项。 D Nearly 6,000 years ago, ancient people climbed dry, rocky hills in what is now the Nigerian Sahara and carved large images of giraffes into the sandstone. The quite detailed Dabous giraffe rock art is one of many ancient carvings of giraffes found in Africa. We are still attracted to giraffes today, but many of these animals are at risk, largely due to habitat loss and illegal hunting. Giraffes make their homes in many different environments with varied levels of human influence. Each area has unique environmental conditions and protection measures. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to protecting giraffe habitats and promoting harmonious living between giraffes and humans. To understand how giraffes are traveling across Africa, conservation ecologists (保护生态学家) like me are studying how they interact with their habitats across large geographic regions, using space-age technology and advanced statistical (统计学的) approaches that ancient people could have hardly imagined. We have carried out a large giraffe-tracking study to better understand giraffes’ movements. Each tracking operation contributes to local studies by telling us something interesting about giraffe behavior. The study is also important for guiding local management of giraffes. We share giraffe location data (数据) in real time with officials in protected areas to guide day-to-day conservation actions. Overall, we’ve found that on average, each animal has a home range of about 140 square miles and travels about 8.5 miles every day. One of the biggest movers in our study, a female northern giraffe in Niger that traveled among communities raising farm animals in the dry Sahel, covered a home range of nearly 1,500 square miles ― larger than the land area of Rhode Island. Giraffes’ movements changed significantly based on the supply of food sources and the level of human presence. They tended to move less in places with rich resources or significant human development. They traveled faster and covered larger areas when they were moving between resource-rich areas and more heavily developed areas. Our movement data from giraffes across Africa is throwing new light on their responses to different conditions and providing important information for conserving these unique animals in a rapidly changing world. 32. Why does the author mention the Dabous giraffe rock art? A. To show the ancients’ attraction to giraffes. B. To explain ancient ways of hunting giraffes. C. To describe the ancients’ efforts to save giraffes. D. To stress the detail in ancient carvings of giraffes. 33. What is paragraph 2 mainly about? A. Environmental influences on giraffes. B. Challenges in protecting giraffes. C. Human-giraffe relationships. D. Various habitats of giraffes. 34. What did the large study find? A. Giraffes can get along with farm animals. B. Giraffes cover impressively large areas. C. Giraffes prefer living in dry areas. D. Giraffes have a sense of home. 35. What is the best title for the text? A. The impact of habitat loss on giraffes B. Studying giraffes based on historical data C. Tracking giraffes across various locations D. A high-tech approach to giraffe conservation 【答案】32. A 33. B 34. B 35. 根据第一段第二、三句“The quite detailed Dabous giraffe rock art is one of many ancient carvings of giraffes found in Africa. We are still attracted to giraffes today, but many of these animals are at risk, largely due to habitat loss and illegal hunting.(相当细致的达布斯长颈鹿岩画是在非洲发现的众多古代长颈鹿雕刻之一。 故选 A 项。 根据第二段“Giraffes make their homes in many different environments with varied levels of human influence. Each area has unique environmental conditions and protection measures. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to protecting giraffe habitats and promoting harmonious living between giraffes and humans.(长颈鹿在 许多不同的环境中安家,这些环境受到不同程度的人类影响。每个地区都有独特的环境条件和保护措施。 没有一种通用的方法可以保护长颈鹿的栖息地并促进长颈鹿与人类之间的和谐共处。)”可知,长颈鹿栖息 地多样且受人类影响程度不同,每个地区情况独特,没有通用的保护方法,这体现了保护长颈鹿存在的挑 战;因此第二段主要介绍了保护长颈鹿面临的挑战。故选 B 项。 【34 题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段“Overall, we’ve found that on average, each animal has a home range of about 140 第 15页/共 28页square miles and travels about 8.5 miles every day. One of the biggest movers in our study, a female northern giraffe in Niger that traveled among communities raising farm animals in the dry Sahel, covered a home range of nearly 1,500 square miles ― larger than the land area of Rhode Island.(总的来说,我们发现平均每只动物的活动 范围约为 140 平方英里,每天移动约 8.5 英里。我们研究中移动范围最大的动物之一是一只在尼日尔的雌性 北方长颈鹿,它在干旱的萨赫勒地区饲养农场动物的社区之间活动,其活动范围接近 1500 平方英里——比 罗德岛的陆地面积还大。)”可知,这项大型研究发现长颈鹿的活动范围非常大。故选 B 项。 【35 题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第三段“To understand how giraffes are traveling across Africa, conservation ecologists (保护 生态学家) like me are studying how they interact with their habitats across large geographic regions, using space-age technology and advanced statistical (统计学的) approaches that ancient people could have hardly imagined.(为了了解长颈鹿如何在非洲各地迁徙,像我这样的保护生态学家正在研究它们如何在大地理区域 内与栖息地相互作用,使用古人几乎无法想象的太空时代技术和先进的统计方法。)” If you’ve visited Lisbon or anywhere in Portugal in recent years, then you will have encountered sardines (沙 丁鱼). Every summer, my grandmother, mom, aunts, cousins and I visited my great-grandmother in the village of Hydaburg in southeastern Alaska. I loved to visit my village, where everyone cared for each other. Elders always received the first share of what the ocean provided, and children served the elders. I remember one summer day when I was about ten years old. The weather was warm and sunny, making it a perfect day for berry (浆果) picking. We could smell the sweetness of the berries in the air, and I felt excited. I went to pick berries with my little cousins. That evening, my family would make berry jams (果 酱 ) at home together. On the way there, we crossed a bridge over the river. There were so many salmon (大麻哈鱼) that it looked as if we could cross the river just walking on their backs! Suddenly, we saw a family of killer whales swimming nearby, and one jumped, as if to say “Hello!” All of us shouted with joy. I was amazed by the sight and felt a strong connection to nature. The journey to the berry field was filled with laughter. Finally, we arrived at the berry field. We saw many berries. We started to pick and eat the berries, filling our baskets quickly. Suddenly, I heard a noise in the bushes (灌木). My heart raced as I turned to see a large black bear. Fear spread through us. I remembered my great-grandmother’s warning, “Sing loud, dear one, so the bears know it’s our turn.” We needed to be careful and respect the bears while picking berries. I told my little cousins we needed to stay calm. The bear stopped, smelling the air. I took a deep breath and began to sing loudly, my cousins quickly joining in. To our relief, the bear stopped for a moment before walking back into the bushes. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________ 第 26页/共 28页In the afternoon, we returned home with our baskets full of berries. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________ 【 答 案 】 To our relief, the bear stopped for a moment before walking back into the bushes. To stay safe, we continued singing to keep it away. Luckily, the bear didn’t come back, and we turned our focus back to picking the berries. In the afternoon, we returned home with our baskets full ofberries. We excitedly shared our story with our family, describing how we had met a bear. The adults praised us for our bravery and for following my great-grandmother’s advice.
