Peter loves baseball. Last summer, he helped to coach a school baseball team. When he first
watched the team of 12-year-olds play baseball, his first impressions were not really positive.
Some players often left as soon as they started losing. Other players paid too much attention to
all their mistakes during the game or preferred to dig up the grass when they weren’t in the play. A
lot of boys threw their baseball bats when they lost the catch.
While their baseball skills improved over time with more practice, there were still problems. The
team had a long way to go. For example, some boys were hard on those who made mistakes. Instead
of being supportive or encouraging, they blamed (责怪) each other.
Peter started one-on-one talks with each player to discuss things that he had noticed. Some were
about skills like holding the bat up higher or opening their eyes when they were making a catch. But
most were about staying positive and supporting each other.
Things began to change slowly. The boys began to take the duties for their play instead of
blaming others for mistakes. They stayed positive even when losing. The team culture was
improving.
Players began encouraging each other, high-fiving and supporting teammates. Peter was
especially pleased to see some of the boys taking leadership roles and having their own one-on-one
talks with their teammates.
Peter didn’t think he made huge progress in teaching the boys how to throw, catch or hit better,
but he was pleased that their conversations around the character led to something positive. Although
the team still lost games, their character became stronger. Next season, their character will be tested
again.
24.Which is one of the negative behaviors the players showed when Peter first watched them?
A.They gave up when they started losing.
B.They refused to practice baseball skills.
C.They paid no attention to their teammates.D.They argued with the coach during games.
25.What was the main focus of Peter’s one-on-one talks with the players?
A.Improving baseball techniques.
B.Keeping a positive attitude.
C.Blaming players for their mistakes.
D.Making plans to win more games.
26.How did the players themselves help improve the team culture?
A.By studying other teams’ game videos.
B.By practicing baseball skills every night.
C.By encouraging and supporting each other.
D.By asking Peter to punish players who played poorly.
27.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Team Success: Improved Baseball Skills
B.The Real Progress: Stronger Character
C.Team Culture: Ending Teammate Blame
D.Player Growth: Taking Leadership Roles

ChatGPT is an AI chatbot (智能聊天程序) from OpenAI, an AI technology company In San
Francisco. It can produce any kind of writing as required. Many schools are afraid that ChatGPT
could result in dishonesty and harm learning. So the tool, called AI Text Classifier from the same
maker, is invented. Its task is to decide whether the writing was produced by students or by AI
programs.
OpenAI warns that its new tool—like others already in use—is not perfect. The method for
detecting AI-written writing “will be wrong sometimes,” said Jan Leike of OpenAI. “Because of
that,” he added, “it shouldn’t be only relied upon when making decisions.”
Teenagers and college students were among the millions of people who began experimenting
with ChatGPT after it was put into use on November 30. The tool is a free service on OpenAI’s
website. Many people have found ways to use it creatively and harmlessly. Still, some teachers are
worried that it could be used to cheat.
So far public schools in some cities, such as New York City and Los Angeles, began to block (阻
止) its use in classrooms and on school computers. Public schools in Seattle blocked ChatGPT on all
school computers but then opened it to teachers. One spokesman Tim Robinson said teachers wanted
to use ChatGPT as a teaching tool. “We can’t afford to ignore (忽视) it,” Robinson said. Studentscould also use the service as a “personal teacher” or to help create ideas when doing homework,
Robinson said.
OpenAI talked about its new tool on a blog recently. But the company added that the tool could
help to find some mistakes in writing as well as catch cheating. The longer a piece of writing is, the
better the tool is at deciding whether an AI system or a human wrote something.
28. Who are more likely to use AI Text Classifier?
A. Students. B. Teachers. C. Parents. D. Writers.
29. What is Leike’s attitude towards AI Text Classifier?
A. Positive. B. Unconcerned C. Cautious D. Satisfied
30. Why are some teachers worried about ChatGPT?
A. It costs the users a lot of money.
B. It often makes wrong decisions.
C. They can’t use it as a teaching tool.
D. Students will take advantage of it to cheat.
31. What can we learn from the example of ChatGPT?
A. Every coin has its two sides. B. Rome was not built in one day.
C. A good beginning is half done. D. A bit is better than nothing.
D
Many teachers believe frequent quizzes (小测验) help students better grasp classroom material.
Crede, an associate professor of psychology, was skeptical that something as simple as a quiz could
positively affect students’ academic performance. He decided to dig deeper and conduct an analytic
study of existing research to see if there was any proof to the idea. What he discovered truly
surprised him.
Crede analyzed data from previously published studies that examined 52 classes with almost
8,000 students, primarily college-level courses, to determine if frequent quizzes improved the
students’ academic performance. Laboratory settings were kept out of the study because Crede
wanted to observe whether similar studies from labs would apply to general classrooms.
Crede discovered that when students are quizzed over class material at least once a week they
tend to perform better on midterm and final exams compared to students who did not take quizzes.
He also found that students who took frequent quizzes were less likely to fail the class, especially if
they were struggling with the course content. Students who struggle the most in a class seem to
benefit the greatest from frequent quizzes. The other surprising thing was how much quizzes helped
reduce failure rates in classes. The chances of passing a class went through the roof whereinstructors used this. In addition to quiz frequency, another factor that seemed to positively affect
students’ performance was immediate feedback from instructors. Also, quizzes that required students
to answer with written responses proved more beneficial to their understanding of class material
compared to multiple-choice questions.
Asking teachers to grade written quizzes daily or weekly may discourage some from carrying
them out in their classes. Instead, it is recommended that instructors give online quizzes that can be
automatically graded by a course management system. Quiz attributes (属性) proved insignificant in
the study, including whether the tests were pop quizzes or planned, or if they were online or on
paper.
32. What did Crede do to ensure his study’s accuracy?
A. He focused on what happened in classrooms.
B. He researched as many students as he could.
C. He made laboratory settings as real as possible.
D. He gave easy quizzes to make every student do well.
33. What does the underlined words “went through the roof” mean in paragraph3?
A. rose B. appeared C. faded D. lost
34. What did Crede discover in his study?
A. Frequent quizzes could remove students’ failure in classes.
B. Instructors’ feedback was more important than frequent quizzes.
C. Frequent quizzes were especially useful to the struggling students.
D. Multiple-choice questions shouldn’t be included in frequent quizzes.
35. What may be a disadvantage of frequent quizzes for teachers?
A. Accessing the Internet less frequently.
B. Having too many exam papers to mark.
C. Being unable to get appropriate test materials.
D. Finding it hard to choose the right type of quiz.

best friend forever. Days passed, and I couldn’t concentrate on my studies or enjoy anything I used to

Burus’ sister, who studied at China’s Xiamen University, encouraged Burus to come and explore
China. “My friends thought learning Chinese was too difficult, but my sister showed me pictures of her
⑰
life in China—her friends, festivals and food,” Burus said. “I saw it as more than just a place to study. Itlooked more like an adventure.”
Burus arrived in China in February 2024, right before the Chinese New Year, and quickly experienced the
lively festive atmosphere. “Everywhere I went, the streets were filled with red. It was a new experience for
me,” she said.
After settling into Tianjin University, Burus noticed that the usually busy campus was almost empty
at the Spring Festival. “It reminds me of the Ramadan Feast in Türkiye when we return to our

hometowns to celebrate with family. I love how both cultures value family gatherings during important
holidays,” Burus said. As classes began in March, Burus quickly adapted to learning and living at
Tianjin University. Her best Chinese friend Meiqi taught her how to use chopsticks and introduced her to

Tianjin street food. One of Burus’ most special memories was celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival in
2024. That day happened to be her birthday, and she learned how to make zongzi with her classmates.

Now, Burus feels that China has become a second home where she has made lifelong friends and experienced
the beauty of its culture.
