You might have seen fireworks, but have you seen “iron fireworks” called Datiehua? This traditional Chinese
art uses liquid iron to create bright sparks (火花) like flowers in the sky. The performers need to heat the iron to
1,600℃. Then, they scoop the liquid (液体) and hit it with a wooden board. This creates a shower of sparks.
Yang is a Datiehua performer in Henan Province. He was surprised when Jiang, a young woman, asked to learn
this skill. Few women tried it before because it’s dangerous — hot iron can burn skin if handled wrong. Yang warned
Jiang, but she didn’t give up. Yang finally decided to give her a chance.
With Yang’s help, Jiang began her training. She practiced hitting stones, sand, and water to build strength. After
weeks of training, her first show finally came. At night, she and the team created a “firework” show with glowing
sparks. Though she got small burns, Jiang said, “The hardest part is beating fear. Courage has nothing to do with
gender (性别)!”
,
After Jiang’s team posted the video of the show online many people became interested in the art and learned
more about it. “We’re happy to share this art with the world!” said Jiang. Her story shows that with bravery and
practice, anyone can keep traditions alive.
4. What is Datiehua?
A. It is a modern art form using real fireworks.

6. What can we know from paragraph 3?

There are now all kinds of robots that can do all kinds of things: robots that can clean your home, robots that
can deliver your shopping, robots that can teach your children, and even robots that can play tennis with you.
However, a new robot from Panasonic can’t do any of these things. The new robot, called NICOBO, actually
can’t do so much at all. NICOBO is a soft, “weak” robot. It is invented to become a companion for lonely people.
So what can NICOBO do? Well, the robot can wag its tail if you pet it. It can turn around, nod up and down, and
move its eyes to look at you. It speaks its own language, and can also learn some simple foreign languages and talk
with its owner.
,
The robot which is about the size of a bowling ball, has a small child’s voice. The idea is that looking after a
childlike robot that can’t even move by itself will make people feel less lonely.
However, NICOBO isn’t cheap. The robot itself costs around $460. And there’s also a monthly fee for $8 for
software updates.
Will anyone buy it? Actually someone probably will. Panasonic made 320 NICOBO robots available on a
website. They were all sold out in a single day.
NICOBO has been available to buy online since May 16, 2023.
8. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?
A. Applications of robots. B. The newly-invented robots.
C. Different kinds of robots. D. Things expected to do by robots.
9. Who is NICOBO suitable for?
A. Unsocial people. B. Lazy housewives.
C. Researchers in AI. D. Students studying art.
10. What can be known about NICOBO?
A. It is a little costly. B. It looks like a child.
C. It can clean the house. D. It can only be bought offline.
11. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. Robots comfort people. B. NICOBO is promising.
C. Online shopping is powerful. D. Humans like robots very much.

Encouraging people to exercise outdoors could help to prevent several conditions including depression and
type 2 diabetes, the first study of its kind has found. Physical activity in natural environments prevents almost
13,000 cases of non-communicable (非传染的) diseases (NCDs) a year in England and saves treatment costs of
第5页/共11页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司more than £100m, researchers from the University of Exeter said.
NCDs are a group of conditions that cannot be spread between people and result in long-term health problems.
The most common — including heart and lung disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes — cause 74 percent of global
deaths and are on the rise, according to the World Health Organisation.
The Exeter study focused on places such as beaches and coasts, countryside and open spaces in towns and
cities, such as parks. Using data including a survey of the English population, the research team estimated (估计)
how many cases of six NCDs — major depressive disorder (MDD), type 2 diabetes, ischaemic (局部的) heart
disease, ischaemic stroke, colon cancer, and breast cancer — are prevented through nature-based recreational
exercise.
In 2019, 22 million adults in England aged 16 years or older visited natural environments at least once a week.
Using reported exercise levels, the researchers estimated that this prevented 12,763 cases of NCDs — the vast
majority being MDD — creating annual healthcare savings of £108.7m.
Although it has been reported that exercising specifically in natural environments is more helpful for a lot of
emotional outcomes compared with urban environments, this is the first such survey conducted on a national wide,
the research team said.
“We have almost certainly underestimated the true value of nature-based physical activity in terms of disease
prevention,” Dr James Grellier from the University of Exeter Medical School, said. The team hope that their study,
published in Environment International, encourages investment in spaces such as parks to make it easier for people
to be physically active.
12. What does paragragh 2 mainly about?
A. The cause of NCDs. B. The general introduction of NCDs.
C. The treatment of NCDs. D. The prevention of NCDs.
13. What can we infer about outdoor exercise from paragraph 4?
A. It attracts people with MDD. B. It increases the cases of NCDs.
C. It has little effect on those under 16. D. It’s very helpful for mental health.
14. What should be built more according to the researchers?
A. Parks. B. Gyms. C. Hospitals. D. Apartments.
15. What can be the best title of this text?
A. New Cures for NCDs Are Found B. City Residents Need More Exercise
C. Exercise Outdoors to Prevent Disease D. NCDs Are a Major Threat to Humanity

Mary had always been a lover of tales. Her imagination was rich, and she often found herself making up stories in
her head. Yet, she never dared to share them with anyone, confined (受限) by her shy nature and a fear of public
speaking. Life passed her by in a routine that left little room for self-expression, and her stories remained locked
within the walls of her mind.
One day, an old friend invited Mary to attend a local storytelling workshop. Hesitantly, she agreed, hoping to
find a way to break free from her shell. As she entered the place, she felt a mix of expectation and fear. What if she
stumbled(磕绊) over her words? What if people laughed at her? Despite her anxiety, Mary took her seat among the
other participants, each there for their own reason—some seeking a new hobby, others looking for personal growth.
The workshop facilitator(主持人), a charming woman named Evelyn, greeted them warmly. She spoke of the
power of stories and the beauty of sharing one’s voice. As the hours went by, Mary learned techniques to build
suspense(悬念), create lifelike characters, and tell a fascinating story. The other participants listened carefully, offering
ideas and encouragement. For the first time in a long while, Mary felt seen and heard.
As the day drew to a close, Evelyn announced an upcoming storytelling competition. It would be held in a few
weeks at, a local bookstore. To Mary’s surprise, she found herself volunteering to participate. The thought of standing
onstage frightened her, but something within her longed for the challenge.
