If someone were to ask me what it is like to be a student now, I would probably answer them like this: being a
student in today’s society is not always easy.
Adults often tell us that we don’t know what stress is. But we have our own levels of stress. Many students in
their high school years start their first job, so now you have school in the mornings, followed by responsibilities at
home and work. By the time you are done there, you are too tired to finish your school work, but you stay up late to
finish and return to school feeling sleepy the next day. What good is that?
Let’s not forget about peer (同龄人) pressure. All high school students meet with it at some point in their lives.
High school can be a place where students are made fun of, singled out and pointed at.
My point is: it is a whole lot more stressful to be a student in high school than adults believe. Our stress may not
include paying bills, but I’m sure if the adults in our lives could go back to school today, they would be surprised at
how much it has changed.
I admit that there aren’t good moments and memories while we are students. My mum always tells me to
enjoy it while I can. I know that the world outside of school is often hard and that the responsibilities are serious.
That’s exactly why I know that the focus I give to my future is important in leading me to a career that will allow me
to contribute (贡献) to society.
24. What is the author’s attitude to high school students’ working part-time?
A. He is against it. B. He feels proud of it.
C. He considers it worth a try. D. He thinks it does them good.
25. What does the author think of today’s adults?
A. They are proud of high school students.
B. They expect too much of high school students.
C. They are more stressed than high school students.
D. They don’t fully understand high school students.
26. What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Stress. B. Schoolwork. C. Part-time job. D. School life.

A. The roles of the youth in today’s society.
B. The stressful life of high school students.
C. The way to deal with stress of school life.
D. The differences between parents and high school students.

Should We Fear Maths?
How good are you at maths? Some people love the challenge of algebra (代数) or enjoy working out number
puzzles such as Sudoko. Maths is all around us, from working out how to split the bill after a meal, to calculating
your household bills. But many dread the moment when they have to deal with numbers and figures and feel a real
sense of worry and confusion. It can seem depressing (令人沮丧的), but this maths anxiety is perfectly normal, and
you’re definitely not alone. And anyway, our worries and fears don’t necessarily reflect our ability.
The problem really starts in childhood, at school. Research has found that maths teachers who are nervous about
teaching the subject can pass on their anxiety to the pupils, and girls may be more likely to be affected. The Programme
for International Student Assessment found around 31% of 15 and 16-year-olds across 34 countries said they got very
nervous doing maths problems, 33% said they got tense doing maths homework, and nearly 60% said they worried
maths classes would be difficult. Psychologists (心理学家) have been trying to work out why mental arithmetic (心
算) can bring us out in a sweat. That seed of fear may come from many sources, but some suggest that articulating
your fears can loosen their hold on you, and encourage children to see a maths test as a challenge, not a threat. Ideally,
we need to think positively about maths and give it a second chance.
28. What do we know about maths from Paragraph 1?
A. It is less useful in our daily life.
B. It is a subject that all of us love it.
C. The anxiety about it depresses many people.
D. The worries about it perfectly reflect our ability.
29. What does the underlined word “dread” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Like. B. Fear. C. Overcome. D. Challenge.
30. How does the author express maths anxiety in Paragraph 2?
A. By listing numbers.
B. By giving examples.
C. By making comparisons.
D. By explaining definitions.

A. Different. B. Negative. C. Opposite. D. Positive.

The measure of a good night’s sleep is usually based on two things—the amount of time spent sleeping and the
quality of that sleep. But now researchers say there is a third thing that matters even more than the other two when it
comes to keeping good sleep habits, and that is having a regular bedtime.
A study has found that going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day have an important effect on
one’s health. Adults who stick to a regular bedtime tend to weigh less, have lower blood sugar and reduced risk of
heart disease.
The researchers studied the sleeping habits of 2,000 adults with an average age of 69. They found that people
with greater irregularity (无规律) in their sleep patterns tended to go to sleep later at night, feel sleepy and sleep more
during the day, and experienced reduced light exposure. These people were also more likely to be stressed. Among
the three kinds of sleep problems, sleep regularity was the most strongly associated with health.
Of course, there are many people for whom this may be impossible, such as night-shift workers or those with
late-night duty. But for those who don’t have mandatory (强制的) reasons to stay up late, they should make an
effort to go to bed at the same time every night. Skip the late afternoon coffee. Get off the phone. Try this calculator
to figure out the best bedtime.
As Matthew Walker, a scientist, wrote, “The shorter your sleep, the shorter your life.” Surely that’s reasonable
enough to go to bed on time.
.
32 What can we infer from the research?
A. People feel more stressed when they grow older. B. The old often have less sleep.
C. Adults enjoy sleeping late. D. Regular bedtime does good to our health.
33. Which of the following influences health most?
A. Reduced light exposure. B. Sleep regularity.
C. Sleeping during the day. D. Sleeping later at night.
34. According to the author, those who don’t have to stay up late should ______.
A. Avoid the late-night duty. B. Skip the late-night coffee.
C. Get off the phone while working. D. Try to sleep at the same time each night.
35. What’s the best title for the text?
A. The Importance of Sleep B. Ways to Have a Good Sleep
C. Regular Bedtime for Your Health D. The Suitable Time for Sleep
