In the digital age, opportunities are arising for everyone. However, only those
putting plans into action can stay ahead. Alexandr Wang is one such example.
Los Alamos National Laboratory was where Alexandr spent his childhood. Both
his parents were physicists there. Alexandr, from a young age, had a sharp mind. As a
kid, he was regarded as a math wizard (奇才) and competed in national math and
computer competitions. Finishing high school, Alexandr entered MIT where machine
learning and AI amazed him. He saw the potential (潜力) of AI, and was excited about
how it could change the world. But it wasn’t making a real impact. His ambition to set
up a company in that field was seeded then.
At 17, he got the role of tech lead at Quora where he met Lucy Guo , with whom
Alexandr founded Scale AI, which turned out to be a considerable success. In fact, at
that time, there were various opportunities in the tech world. It was hard to decide which
road they should go down. Then he and his team decided to take a different approach
— instead of following diverse paths, they agreed to focus on one. They went with
“imagery, computer vision and other kinds of sensor data”. And that is what made the
company’s profits rise quickly. Scale AI has a net worth of about $7.3 billion at present,
with Alexandr being the world’s youngest self-made billionaire.
When asked lessons he’d like to share with founders, Alexandr stated there are a
number of things. “The top one is always doing things that go with your values and how
you want to build a company at the beginning. When you talk to investors (投资者),
they’ll contribute advice that may go against your goal. Figure out your focus and what
gets you started.”
24. What inspired Alexandr to build Scale AI?
A. The work at Quora. B. His experiences at university.
C. The influence of his parents. D. His talent for math and computer.
25. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 3?A. The key to the success of Scale AI. B. Challenges of Alexandr’ s
career.
C. Alexandr’s great achievements. D. The process of founding Scale
AI.
26. Which of the following can best describe Alexandr?
A. Clever and generous. B. Courageous and outgoing.
C. Ambitious and sociable. D. Adventurous and determined.
27. What did Alexandr advise founders to do?
A. Stick to one particular direction. B. Keep an open mind on suggestions.
C. Remain true to the original intention. D. Find a friend to start a company.

Western fashion brands(时尚品牌)have a design problem with Chinese
characters, or hanzi. They still disappoint Chinese customers with the way they use
Chinese writing on their products.
The most common mistakes suggest there is not enough research and cultural
understanding. For example, a Burberry scarf was embroidered(刺绣)with the
Chinese character fu upright instead of upside down, as it's traditionally shown in
China. Even the fonts(字体)are a problem. In May, Dior, one of the world's leading
fashion brands, started a special service for customers to have their Chinese names
embroidered on Book Tote handbags. When some Chinese stars carrying the customized
handbags were shown on social media, the Chinese fashion community expressed their
disappointment. Many believed the font on Dior's handbags showed little artistic taste
and looked cheap.
It's not all disappointment, though. Experimentation and careful research have
brought positive results for brands coming close to hanzi. Consider the logo(标志)
created for Prada Rong Zhai, an old building repaired and owned by the Prada Group
in Shanghai. The Rong Zhai type was created by 2 x4 (a New York-based design
studio) by using the Roman letters in the original Prada logo to create the Chinese
characters. The result is a unique logo that suggests both lettered strictness and a classic
Prada style. The type's West-meet-East mix won broad admiration among Chinese
customers online.
One way to keep up to date is to team up with creatives and artists of the country
to create designs that can be more acceptable to Chinese customers. Joining forces with
local partners can also avoid misunderstandings that happen when a design team doesn'tknow Chinese culture very well.
28. What were the Chinese fashion community disappointed at? ______
A. The design's old-fashion. B. The design's higher price.
C. The design's common font. D. The design's ugly brand name.
29. What is special about the logo of Prada Rong Zhai?
A. It brings together Western and Chinese writing.
B. It is created to introduce Chinese hanzi culture.
C. It was designed by online supporters of the company.
D. It invited a famous Chinese star to write the characters.
30. What does the author expect Western designers to do? ______
A. Try to create more fashionable fonts. B. Show more hanzi in Western culture.
C. Find the causes of cultural differences. D. Work together with Chinese designers.
31. What does the text mainly want to tell us? ______
A. International brands spreading Chinese culture.
B. Western fashion's struggle with Chinese writing.
C. Western designers' research on Chinese characters.
D. The collection between Chinese customers and hanzi.

In January, an Arizona desert community found itself in a terrible situation: The
water was cut off. Rio Verde Foothills is made up of about 2,000 homes. For years,
many in the community have depended on water trucked in from the nearby city of
Scottsdale, which gets its water from the Colorado River. But the river is drying up.
Now some people in Rio Verde Foothills must look after themselves. Arizona has
increasingly pumped (用泵抽吸) water from underground, but that provides less than
half of what the state needs.
Some experts say the solution is to import water from outside of the state. One idea
is to build a $5.5 billion desalination (海水淡化) factory on Mexico’s Sea of Cortez.
Supporters say this could solve the problem for many years. However, some people see
a different future. Imported water could damage the environment. Margaret Wilder is a
professor at the University of Arizona, in Tucson. She warns that big projects like this
one could be used to support or excuse “much more unsustainable (不可持续的)
development in the desert in the future”.Environmentalists say the desalination project would harm the planet in several
ways. Some of the salt taken out of the Sea of Cortez might end up back in the ocean,
harming wildlife. The pipeline would damage land where people and animals live. And
the desalination process would consume lots of energy. This would create greenhouse
gases.
As more water problems like the one in Rio Verde Foothills crop up, Wilder says
she's hopeful that Arizona will understand the risks of never- ending expansion (扩大)
into the desert.
People in Tucson, Arizona, have found a solution to the city’s water shortage:
rainwater. Thousands of households are collecting it and using it for cooking, for
drinking, and in their gardens. Government leaders have taken notice. The city now
requires publicly built roads to collect stormwater. Tucson also helps residents pay for
equipment that collects rainwater for home use.
32. What is the main cause of the water shortage in the Rio Verde Foothills
community?
A. People have been using too much water during their daily life.
B. Water from the river that provides it is running low.
C. Arizona has stopped pumping underground water.
D. The nearby city has cut off its water supply.
33. What’s the Wilder’s attitude to the desalination factory?
A. Doubtful. B. Thankful. C. Confident. D. Uninterested.
34. What does the underlined word “consume” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Use. B. Produce. C. Waste. D. Store.
35. What is the government of Tucson doing to solve its problem?
A. Inventing new equipment to reuse water.
B. Limiting the number of homes that can be built.
C. Encouraging people to collect and use rainwater.
D. Increasing the amount of water pumped from underground.

第二节(满分20分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的
短文。
Be yourself and always follow your heart. Never let anyone change who you are.
This is the lesson I have learned from my childhood experience when I figured out I
wasn't invited to the party, Bridget's party.
One morning, I got off the bus and saw my friends except me hugging under the
tree where we used to stand. The circle seemed tighter as I approached; the white
invitation cards being hastily stuffed into backpacks gave it away. I knew as well as the
entire universe that Bridget’s party was this weekend. Bridget was the most popular girl
in our class. She was thin and beautiful, always wearing fabulous clothes and fine
makeup.
Why hadn't she invited me? My feet were too big? No, Maybe. My face was
broken out? Why did she invite every person in my group except me? I tried to think ofany interactions I'd had with Bridget recently. A few days earlier, we'd been partners
during a sixth period project. I was determined to get the project done and she was
absorbed in looking at fashion magazines. She barely spoke to me except to say, “You're
so serious. You know, you should smile more.”
Soon, I had overheard all the details about the party. They were going swimming.
It was a sleepover. They were renting scary movies and were going to stay up all night.
Each time someone mentioned the party, I smiled weakly and nodded, with my stomach
in knots.
When having my favorite English class, I found myself just unable to concentrate
on the short stories we were supposed to be reading in class. Maybe she didn't invite
me because of my coat. It is pretty ugly compared to some of the other girls' coats. I
should have bought another color. Maybe I should smile more but I just can't get into
smiling at people unless I know them really well. But I just couldn't pretend to be the
person I wasn't. I felt sick.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
At lunch, my friend Kate who had been invited came over to me, trying to show
off,
I was about to let it go when Bridget invited me as a substitute(代替者) for a girl
who couldn't come.
