C On March 29, 1974, farmers were digging a well northeast of Xi’an when they made an amazing find: the bodies of life-sized figures, made of terracotta, from the Qin Dynasty. The founder of the Qin Dynasty was Qinshihuang. It was no secret that when Qinshihuang died he was buried in a huge tomb more than 70 meters tall. However, through the ages, details of his tomb had become forgotten. So when the first terracotta warriors were dug up in 1974, the whole world reacted in surprise. Since then, about 500 secondary tombs (陪葬坑) and sites have been discovered nearby. We now know that the army was meant to protect Qinshihuang in death. It is thought there may be more than 8, 000 warriors in total. Every statue is different. The face and clothes of each one was modeled on a real soldier in his army. In addition to the warriors, there are also terracotta horses and chariots. Much of this terracotta army is now on display at a huge museum on the site. Only a small part of the area around Qinshihuang’s tomb has been dug up, and the contents of the tomb itself are still a mystery. According to old stories, it contains a huge, underground palace, filled with treasure. Though some research has been done on the tomb, and it appears that these old stories may be true, the tomb has not been dug up because of the challenges. It could take many more years to discover all the secrets buried there. 28. What was the find made by the farmers in 1974? A. An underground palace. B. Bodies of life-sized figures. C. 8,000 terracotta warriors. D. Treasure in Qinshihuang’s tomb 29. What do we know about Qinshihuang’s tomb from paragraph 2? A. Secondary tombs are far away. B. Every statue is totally different. B. They are warriors on horses. C. Their faces and clothes are the same. D. They are from the Qin Dynasty. 31. Which is closest in meaning to “a mystery” in paragraph 4? A. Something exciting. B. Something obvious. C. Something uninteresting. D. Something unknown.D My father decided to start learning French when he was 57. He met his teacher twice a week and worked really hard to finish his homework. Before long, he was visiting the French bakery across town to practice his pronunciation. His hobby seemed a little strange, but the reason went deeper than that. My grandmother developed signs of dementia (老年痴呆) in her early 70s, and studies suggested that leaming a new language can put off the disease for at least five years. Attracted by the possible benefit, many people, like my father, have tried to pick up a new language in adulthood. The studies were carried out in people who have used different languages daily since early 20s. Whether leaning another language at a later time provides the same cognitive (认知的) advantages is up for debate. Lots of activities are linked to better brain health in old age, like more education when you’re younger, physical activities and brain-challenging hobbies. Experts say speaking several languages as often as possible may be especially beneficial. “When you learn another language is less important than how often you speak it. If the language is used a lot, you’re getting cognitive training,” said Caitlin Ware, a research engineer at Broca Hospital in Paris. 32. Why did the author’s father visit the French bakery? A. To meet his teacher. B. To buy his breakfast. C. To practice his French. D. To finish his homework. 33. What benefit can learning a new language in old age bring? A. Living a longer life. B. Traveling to France. C. Building up confidence. D. Putting off dementia. 34. What is more important when learning another language according to Ware? . A Starting at a young age. B. Developing different hobbies. C. Speaking the language regularly. D. Taking part in physical activities daily. 35. What is the best title for the passage? A. Brain Benefit from learning New Languages B. Advantages of Receiving a Higher Education C. The Importance of Brain-challenging Hobbies D.
