Dear friends,
I am honoured to deliver a closing speech on behalf of all the Chinese students in the
International Middle School Students Survival Training Camp.
Before I came to Canada, I had made careful preparations for this camp. However, I still
experienced some unexpected challenges, such as the difficulty in making myself understood,
talking with others from several countries, and dealing with culture shock. With great patience
and kindness, the organizers helped me out. The four weeks in the camp has changed me
greatly. Not only did I improve my oral English, but I also made lifelong friendships. Most
importantly, I became more confident.
So now I would like to express my great thanks to all the people who contributed to the
camp. May our friendship last forever. Thank you!

Melati and Isabel decided to make a positive impact straight away. They spent their spare
time picking up the rubbish on the beach. However, soon they realised that they couldn’t solve the
problem on their own, for there was so much plastic. After discussions and preparations, they
started an organisation to spread their idea among the youth, involving more young people in the
movement, which proved to be a hit. More and more teenagers took part. In a month, they
collected and recycled 2.5 tons of plastic altogether, restoring the beautiful beach.
One month later, Melati received a call from the local newspaper. The two girls were invited
to an interview in which they were asked what inspired them to start the organisation, what the
biggest challenge was and what advice they had for young people who wanted to change the
world. They said a team was what kept them going on, and added, “Keeping our team engaged
and motivated has been a challenge and we are happy to have a positive influence.” Melati and
Isabel are heroes who make a big difference to our world.

W:Well,I like to take notes.②But if the topic is difficult,I often record the whole thing.

Text 3W:Hi,Thomas.This is Katie.I found your notebook in the library. Please come to get it back
in the classroom.③Or I'll just leave it in the teachers' office in Room 201,if you don't have
time now.
M: Oh.That's great, Katie! ③ I have been looking for it all day long.I'll go to get it
tomorrow morning.

M:④I find there are plenty of classical music CDs on the Internet. You can buy them very
cheaply if you like them.
W:Great.④I know you very often listen to them. You can try some rock music, which can
make you energetic and powerful. And jazz music also makes people feel relaxed.
M:Mm…I sometimes listen to them.
Text 5
M:You really have a lot of hobbies,Sarah.⑤How do you find time to keep up with all of
them?
W:⑤That's the nice thing about being retired. I have always had a desire to do more in the
field of art,and now that I have time,I really enjoy taking art classes at the community college.
Text 6

⑫
M: ⑪Come on,darling. We are not going for a picnic. It's an art exhibition.
⑫W:OK.Do you think Ethan can understand it?He's only six years old.
M:Maybe he couldn't understand what the artists want to express, but the colours and shapes
will impress him.And that's important for a kid to develop a taste for art.
W:That makes sense.
M:And we'll come back home by lunchtime,so don't worry that little Ethan will get
hungry. W:Oh,I remember. Our new neighbour Daisy called and invited us to her
home for
⑬
dinner this evening. I think we should take something.
Text 9
M:Can I help you?
W:Yes,I'm looking to buy a new jacket. My old one has a hole on it.

W: ⑭I was walking my dog and she ran into the woods,so I ran after her and it got
caught on a tree branch.
M:I did the same thing but on a fence. So,are you looking for an outdoor jacket?
W:Yes,as winter is quickly approaching.
M: Indeed, so you'll want it warm and water proof. This is my favourite one at the
moment.
⑮
W:That is lovely.
M:Try it on.
W: ⑮Have you got any other colour besides black?
M:Yes,you can get it in gray, red, and yellow.A nice blue might suit you actually, and
it matches your eyes.
W:I need something bright as we often go climbing.
M:In that case,I'd go with the yellow. How is that on?
W: ⑯It's a little tight.
M: ⑯Well, that's the small one, so we'd probably go for a medium.
W:Well,I'm usually a large but a medium should be OK.
M:So this one is currently $200,but we're actually giving customers a 10% discount this
weekend.
W: ⑰Amazing!I'm glad I came in today then.

Different countries have different waste management systems. One thing for sure:it's never
too hard to throw your garbage in Indonesia. What Indonesians commonly do is put their
garbage in their personal garbage areas which are usually located in the front of their houses,
⑱
right at the side of the street. In Germany, different kinds of garbage are put in different coloured
cans. For example, blue garbage cans are for paper and cardboard, and pizza boxes go to gray
garbage cans.Green and white garbage cans are for glass. Yellow garbage cans are for plastic
and metals. In Korea, you are expected to sort your waste and put it into the right bags. Each
⑲
district in Korea has its own official garbage bags. The garbage bags could be bought at the
⑳
local supermarket.Proper waste management isn't a hard thing to do,but it needs to be supported
by your family members and your surroundings in order to gain benefits from it.
