Dear friends,
I am honoured to deliver a closing speech on behalf of all the Chinese students in the
International Middle School Students Survival Training Camp.
Before I came to Canada, I had made careful preparations for this camp. However, I still
experienced some unexpected challenges, such as the difficulty in making myself understood,
talking with others from several countries, and dealing with culture shock. With great patience
and kindness, the organizers helped me out. The four weeks in the camp has changed me
greatly. Not only did I improve my oral English, but I also made lifelong friendships. Most
importantly, I became more confident.
So now I would like to express my great thanks to all the people who contributed to the
camp. May our friendship last forever. Thank you!

Melati and Isabel decided to make a positive impact straight away. They spent their spare
time picking up the rubbish on the beach. However, soon they realised that they couldn’t solve the
problem on their own, for there was so much plastic. After discussions and preparations, they
started an organisation to spread their idea among the youth, involving more young people in the
movement, which proved to be a hit. More and more teenagers took part. In a month, they
collected and recycled 2.5 tons of plastic altogether, restoring the beautiful beach.
One month later, Melati received a call from the local newspaper. The two girls were invited
to an interview in which they were asked what inspired them to start the organisation, what the
biggest challenge was and what advice they had for young people who wanted to change the
world. They said a team was what kept them going on, and added, “Keeping our team engaged
