social media, or playing video games, and poor mental health.
W: Yeah. I wouldn’t be surprised.
M: Meanwhile, reading has been shown to have the opposite effect. One study from th e University of Susse x showed
that reading may reduce stress by almost 70%!
W: Wow! Really? Perhaps I should borrow your idea for myself. How many books are you aiming to read next year?
M: Two every month, I thought.

My family recently took a trip to Florida to visit Walt Disney World, where we enjoyed theme parks, water parks, resorts
(旅游胜地), dining, and shopping. We stayed at a lovely beachfront hotel. One night, I looked out of the window and
noticed something strange. Rather than being white or yellow, all the lights along the beachfront were red. I asked the man at
the front desk about the unusual lighting, and he explained it was used to help protect the area’s turtle population. My dad
and I did some research and discovered that light pollution is a serious issue for the world’s sea turtles. When they leave
their eggs, baby turtles head toward the brightest light they can see. Under natural conditions, this would be the light of the
moon and stars on the water. However, bright electric lights often confuse them, guiding them away from the sea and
toward busy roads and hungry, turtle-eating creatures. Female turtles may also be discouraged from laying their eggs on
bright beaches. Scientists discovered that turtles are unable to see red and orange lights well, making them less likely
to affect turtles’ behavior. Now, “turtle-safe” lights are used in most coastal communities in the Gulf of Mexico. I think it is
really cool!
