talk until a common topic appears.
A good way to keep a conversation going is to ask the other person questions.

was called the “Tang Umbrella”. 31 In Vietnam, Thailand and Laos, it has

paper umbrellas from his grandfather. “I want to bring the art to life,” Liu said. 34

a test, his umbrellas were opened and closed 1,000 times without breaking. He also

Do you ever feel like you want to do better in school, sports, or hobbies but
don’t know where to start? 36 Goals are like a roadmap—they show you
where you want to go and how to get there. Here are three easy ways to help you set
and achieve your goals.
37 Instead of saying “I want better grades” or “I will raise my science

If you want to become a better writer, start by writing one paragraph (段落) every
day. Each completed piece builds your skills and confidence!
Make a plan and stick to it. A goal without a plan is just a wish. If you want to
5improve your English vocabulary, decide: “I’ll learn 5 new words every morning
during breakfast.” Use flashcards or a vocabulary app to check your progress. 39
Setting goals helps you grow. 40 Keep going, and you’ll be successful,
too!
A.Setting goals can help!
B.Big dreams may be hard to reach.
C.Make your goals clear and specific (具体的) .

When we talk about communication, we often think of talking with others. But
do you know that we also talk to ourselves?
For example, your mum asks you what you would like for breakfast. Many
foods come to your mind: sandwiches, bread, milk... You might ask yourself, “Which
is healthier?” or “Which one do I want today?” You think quietly and decide to have
sandwiches. So, before you tell your mum what you want to eat, you are talking with
yourself. 41
There are many kinds of inner (内在的) communication in our daily lives, like
reading, writing, thinking, and remembering things. It also includes planning our day,
solving problems, and even imagining the future. 42 Inner communication is
just like a secret conversation happening inside us.
Inner communication plays a role in our lives. It allows you to think about your
own values and make it clear who you are. 43 When you know what you
want, you can get on with yourself better. Also, inner communication helps keep an
eye on your thoughts and realize your emotional state (状态) 44 And then
you will try to cheer up and let them go.
45 If you understand your thoughts better, you will put yourself in
others’ shoes when you talk to or listen to them. Then, you can communicate with
people more easily and build good relationships with them.
A.Good relationships improve inner communication.
B.It’s important to have a healthy breakfast every day.

A tornado is a kind of strong storm with air which moves in a circle quickly.
6They can move over 200 miles per hour and cause a lot of damage (损坏). As they
move across the land, they can easily pick up cars, trucks, and even houses, and then
throw them very far. 46
A safe place could be a basement (地下室) or the lowest floor. If you are in a
home without a basement, try to find a first-floor bathroom or a small room without
windows in the middle of your house. 47
But there are some people who actually want to get close to tornadoes. They are
scientists who want to learn more about tornadoes. 48 They use special tools
to measure what is happening in and around a tornado. One special tool is called a
tornado probe (探测仪). Inside the tornado probe, there are sensors (传感器) to
measure wind speed, temperature, pressure, and direction. And some probes even
have cameras inside. 49
To be able to get these measurements, the scientists have to get a tornado probe
near or into a tornado. Scientists will try to guess where a tornado will go next. Then
they drive to that location and put down the probe. If they do not guess correctly, they
pick up their probe and try another place. 50 Then they take all of the
measurements from the probe and use them to predict where future tornadoes may
form and travel. And they can give people some warnings to keep away from a
dangerous tornado.

mistakes, they can move you forward. 91
If you have made mistakes that harm other people, it is important to offer a
sincere apology (道歉) in person. 92 If you refuse to apologize, the person
hurt by you will hold it against you.

say, very simply-yes, I made a mistake.
Mistakes happen for different reasons. 94 If you make mistakes
because you are tired, try to get more sleep; if you are stressed, look at ways to relax
and keep away from the stress of work.
You should avoid feeling guilty about making mistakes. 95 If you

invented by Da Yu, who successfully controlled the heavy flood. One day, he was
busy dealing with the flood. In order to save time when eating, he used two sticks
from a tree to take the hot food. 102 It was one of the legends (传说) about
chopsticks. In fact, the earliest chopsticks found in China were made of bronze (青铜).

Have you ever traveled to Africa , India or other places where there are
elephants ? You’ve probably seen tours letting you get close to elephants and even
offering you rides. 106 We are here to explain why you can’t do that.
107 Many people in Southeast Asia buy and sell elephants illegally (非
法地). But elephants are wild animals. Humans have no right (权利) to do that.
Elephants are smart and live in groups. They have families and friends. They
can feel pain (痛苦), and they can also feel sad and happy. 108 So in order to
control them , humans take baby elephants away from their family and train them in
pretty bad ways. They beat them badly or even don’t allow them to eat or sleep. 109
Although elephants have large bodies , their spines (脊椎) are not fit to carry
humans. And many of them die as a result of years of carrying humans on their backs
and working.

wild now. Riding elephants is one of the main reasons that lead the animals to die out.

China is making big efforts to help people control their weight and live healthier
lives. The government has started a three-year “Weight Management Year” plan from
2024 to 2027 to fight against obesity ( 肥胖). Obesity can cause serious health
problems. 116
First, it's important to check your BMI (Body Mass Index). For adults, a healthy
BMI is between 18.5 and 24. 117 A BMI of 28 or more means you are obese.
Also, doctors suggest measuring your waist (腰围). Men should keep their waist
under 90 cm, and women under 85 cm.
Eating well is very important, and exercise is just as important! When it comes
to food, choose whole grains like brown rice, fresh vegetables, and lean proteins (瘦蛋
白) such as fish, chicken, or beans. 118
For exercise, try to do 150-300 minutes of activities like walking, cycling, or
dancing every week, and do strength exercises twice a week. 119
120 Teenagers should sleep 7 hours every night because bad sleep can
make them put on weight. Try to eat vegetables first, then meat, and finally rice or
bread during a meal to control how much you eat.
Remember, losing weight isn't about being perfect—just start with small
changes, like drinking water instead of soda or taking the stairs instead of the elevator.
With these easy steps, everyone can have a healthier future.
A.If your BMI is between 24 and 28, you are overweight.
B.Here are some important suggestions that you should know.
C.For example, you can join a sports club to make more friends.
D.Don't eat too many candies and sweet cakes, and also eat less salty food.
E.Small daily habits also can make a big difference, not just diet and
exercise.
15F.Get up and move around for a few minutes every hour during long study
time.
China is taking big steps to help people stay healthy. The government recently
announced it will open more special “weight clinics (诊所)” in hospitals. These
clinics use doctors, food experts, and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). 121
At a press meeting in Beijing, Lei Haichao from the National Health
Commission (NHC) said the plan is part of a new health-first strategy (策略). 122
Many people shared funny posts and drew cartoons about exercising and eating
healthily on the Internet.
123 Over half of Chinese adults are now overweight. If nothing
changes, this number could rise to 70% by 2030. Being overweight can lead to health
problems. So China started a three-year“weight management” campaign in 2024.
124 Food experts guide healthy meals for different cities to refresh the
old habits, such as steamed fish and vegetables in central China, and fresh seafood
with vegetables in the south. People are choosing foods with less sugar and oil. Office
workers prefer salad. Even holiday snacks like mooncakes are now smaller and
healthier. 125 For example, traditional Shanxi noodles now have more
vegetables and tofu instead of oil, meat and too much salt.
Keeping healthy isn’t just about weight but eating well, moving more, and
feeling happy. China hopes to build a healthier future for everyone.

travel about 50 kilometres a day, at speeds of about 12 kilometres per hour.

You frown (皱眉) when you are angry or upset. Your parents pat your shoulder

flying after they score. Body language is everywhere. 181
Body language does not need words. 182 The way you stand, a hand
gesture (手势) and eye contact are all examples of body language.
American scientist Edward T. Hall once found that in a conversation between

body language says another. You may touch your face while telling a lie.
184 In the US, eye contact during a conversation means you are
interested in what the other person is saying. While in some Asian countries, it is
impolite to look straight at a person when you are talking to him or her. People in

There are many natural disasters every year. 196
Typhoons (台风) are one of the most terrible storms, usually near the Pacific
and South China Sea. Most of them happen in July, August, and September.
How do typhoons happen? When a large amount of seawater gets hot under the
summer sun, it evaporates (蒸发) into the air. This makes the air hotter. 197
Then, the cold air around it pours in, filling the space left. After the air is warmer, it
begins to move fast, making wind. The wind goes in circles and keeps blowing higher
and higher in the sky. The warmer the air, the faster the wind moves. When the wind
speed is over 30 meters per second, a typhoon begins.
A typhoon has two parts. One is called the “eye”. 198 The other part is
the cloud wall around the eyes. There is the strongest wind and the strongest rain here.
Typhoons are very dangerous. In November 2013, Typhoon Haiyan caused 6000
deaths in the Philippines. 199
What should we do when a typhoon strikes?
·Stay inside 200
·Try to bring all your things in. Strong winds may even blow your bicycle away!
·Listen to radio or TV, or search for important information on the Internet.
·If you are told to go to a safer place, do it now.
A.More people were hurt and some others were missing.
B.Close all the windows and stay away from them.
C.Typhoons are among them.
D.For example, strong winds cause many problems.
E.In the eye, the wind does not move so fast.
F.When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move high up into the sky.
