Summer Reading Program
Welcome to Brown Summer Reading!
Brown High School has an independent reading program every summer. Our goals for independent reading
include knowing oneself as a reader, understanding how to find what one loves to read for fun, and learning how to
connect with others around books and reading. To that end, we offer you our summer reading program. You can see
the introductions to reading clubs on this website and click different links to see more detailed information.
Every student must join at least one book club this summer.
Club 1: For students who like reading books in which famous people write about their own life.
Club 2: For students who like reading long written stories in which the characters and events are not usually in
real life.
Club 3: For students who like reading pieces of writing that express emotions, experiences, and ideas, especially
in short lines using words that have the same last sound.
Club 4: For students who like reading news reports describing real events and people.
However, we strongly recommend that one of the books you choose be an “unlikely choice”. An “unlikely
choice” will be a type of book that you-wouldn't normally pick. This helps readers to walk outside their comfort
zones or usual selections.
To discover your “unlikely choice”, explore the Peer page in which your classmates will recommend their
favorite books and the Senior page in which teachers will pick their favorite books for students. Parents/caregivers
may want to explore the Staff page to learn more about how to support their children's independent reading. If
students want to get some advice on the choice of books from professional authors, please click the Pro link for
more information.

Diana was out shopping in a busy department store after work one evening. Just five minutes before closing
time, she heard a staff member saying, “someone is having a seizure (癫痫)”. Walking quickly towards the staff
member, Diana saw a fellow shopper on the ground. She had fallen and was lying on the floor, jerking
uncontrollably. A small group of people had gathered to help the woman and a staff member called an ambulance.
Diana knew that she could use what she had learned on her first aid course to help as well.
Knowing it was important to keep the woman safe, one of the employees brought over a staff jacket and they
put it under the woman’s head so she wouldn’t injure herself. “The seizure probably lasted only a few minutes, but
it seemed much longer while it was going on,” Diana said. “When the jerking stopped, a man helped turn the
woman on to her side. I then tilted her head back to help her keep breathing. After the seizure, the woman seemed
not to be able to understand what we were saying and couldn’t speak. Luckily, I had learned that this can happen
after a seizure and it may take some time for people to get back to normal.”
“It was such a comfort when she very tentatively answered that she was OK. By this time, the ambulance was
on its way, the store had closed for the night and the other shoppers who had helped at first had left.” “ We all
agreed that the woman was in safe hands with the first aider and a nurse who had also stopped to help, so I started
to make my way out of the store.”
As I was leaving, one of the store’s employees said, “thank you for your kindness”. “I was very touched by
her words, and I told her that I’d learned first aid in case something like this ever happened, and now it had. Even
though the incident left me feeling very shaken, I was glad I knew what to do to help.”
24. What did Diana do to help the woman suffering from a seizure?
A. She called an ambulance for her.
B. She helped turn the woman to one side.
C. She brought over a staff jacket to keep her warm.
D. She made sure the woman could breathe easily.
25. How did Diana feel after the incident?
A. Annoyed.
 B. Relieved. C. Anxious.
  D. Frightened.
26. Which of the following sentence can best describe Diana’s actions?
A. Actions speak louder than words.
    B. Kill two birds with one stone.
C. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
D. Where there is a will, there is a way.

For many of us, the closest we get to wild animals is at a zoo. These places let us see amazing animals—from
big cats to tiny lizards—and what they are like. It’s an enjoyable and educational experience for us, but is it the best
environment for these animals?
Long ago, people could only see wild animals as stuffed dead exhibits in a museum. Later on, live animals
were captured by explorers, brought home and put on show to the public in menageries (野生动物园). Animal
welfare was not a priority. Modern zoos, however, have changed the living environments for animals, making
bigger enclosures, removing bars, and — to some extent — copying their natural habitats.
Some people have questioned the cruelty of keeping animals in cages for fun, but zoos are keen to show that
they help wildlife by educating us about protection. In the UK, the introduction of The Zoo Licensing Act 1981 also
required zoos to educate the public. Well-managed zoos are now also involved in supporting and funding protection
programmes.
Probably the biggest claim from zoos today is that they help protect species in the wild that are under threat
due to climate change. Robert Young, Chair in Wildlife Conservation at Salford University said: “There are quite a
lot of different species around the planet which we wouldn’t have today if it wasn’t for zoos.” Some zoos have
captive breeding programs which help to preserve the future of species that would otherwise face extinction (灭绝).
Actor Leonardo DiCaprio recently praised Chester Zoo in the LK for its conservation work. It brought “a rare fish
species back from the dead” after breeding and releasing ( 释放) a school of golden skiffia fish back into their
native river.
While the debate about having zoos continues, new opportunities to meet wildlife are being explored, like
virtual reality. Jon Coe, a zoo designer, told the BBC: “Taking a walk through a herd of elephants in the Serengeti, I
think, is going to be possible pretty soon.”
27.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The ways of caring for animals.
    B.The benefits of modern zoos.
C.The introduction of menageries.
D.The historical change in treating wild animals.
28.Why does the author mention the Zoo Licensing Act of 1981?
A.To show the educational role of zoos.
B.To explain why zoos began to help wildlife.
C.To introduce methods of protecting wildlife.
D.To state the need for stricter rules of zoos.
29.What’s Robert Young’s attitude toward having zoos?
A.Unclear.
   B.Worried.
   C.Doubtful.
     D.Supportive.
30.What did Chester Zoo do to protect animals according to paragraph 4?
A.It studied ways for humans to meet wildlife.
B.It raised money for captive breeding programs.
C.It brought back and released a rare fish species.
D.It increased public awareness for animal protection.

Accept mistakes
Mistakes are a common part of the process when learning a language. You may choose the wrong word,

Dear Jack,
I am so sorry to hear that you’re having trouble improving your Chinese writing. I’m more than
glad to offer you some suggestions.
A very good way to improve writing is to read other people’s articles. If you read plenty of good
Chinese articles, you will learn how skillful writers use Chinese to express themselves, and present
information in an excellent way, thus improving your ability to use the language. Like other skills,
you should improve your writing by practicing. What’s more, keeping a diary is also a good idea,
which enables you to get more familiar with Chinese.
It is natural that the beginners make mistakes while writing. But don’t worry. With a strong will
and efforts, you’re sure to make progress in the near future.
                                                          Yours,

floor?
W: I’d prefer it if you could do the dishes for me.
【原文2】W: Where is Susan? We usually have supper together, but today I haven’t seen her anywhere all day.
Had she fallen ill?
M: I was told that she has gone to Guiyang. Her father is in hospital there, who needs attending on.
【原文3】W: Hey, these are great seats. You must have paid an arm and a leg for them.
M: No, they are free. My uncle has tickets to all the games but he couldn’t go to this one, I paid a visit to him last
night and he gave me these tickets.
【原文4】W: Dr Smith, the meeting starts at three o’clock p.m and you are supposed to deliver an opening
address.
M: No problem. My driver will pick me up at 2:30 p.m and it’s only a 10 minute ride to the conference center.
【原文5】M: What a wonderful party and what a lovely girl. I hope to see your daughter on her next birthday
party. All right, see you at work to morrow.
W: Be quick, Tim, your train is about to leave.
M: Take care.
【原文6】W: Do you mind helping me prepare the supplies for mountain climbing?
M: Of course not.
W: Is it going to rain tomorrow?
M: I have checked the weather report. It says it will be cloudy but no rain.

M: What kind of things did you learn from her?
W:She taught us that you can do anything you want to.
M: Anything? Do you really believe that we can do anything?
W: If you really want to do something and you work hard at it, I believe you can do it.

W: Thank you.
【原文9】M: Hi, it’s good to see you again.
W: Yes, it’s been a long time. Hey, you’ve gotten bigger since the last time I saw you.
M: Yeah, ever since I got married, I’ve been putting on weight. My wife’s a good cook.
W: I know a lot of people who let themselves go after they get married. But don’t blame your wife’s good cooking.
You need to start exercising again.
M: I know I should, but after I come home from work, I’m too tired to exercise and I don’t have any place to work
out anyway.
W: Have you thought about joining a health club?
M: I have. But they are expensive. Also, I have friends who go there and it seems like all they ever do is work out. I
just don’t have the time.
W: I’m a member of Spa Fitness, and you’d be surprised at how inexpensive a year’s membership is. It’s true that
there are a few people who are crazy about bodybuilding, but most of the members are normal people who work
out for about an hour, just three times a week.
M: Sounds reasonable. I mean, you look skinny enough.
W: Well, to tell the truth, I haven’t always been this slim. After I turned 30 I started putting on weight. From then
on, I decided to take regular exercise and have been in shape ever since.
