Many students find it hard to fit in at a new school, but it’s different for those in the IB program at Beijing
National Day School. Each year, the CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) Ceremony gives freshmen a chance to
meet their peers (同龄人) and make friends with older students.
The CAS Ceremony is similar to the sorting ceremony in the world of Harry Potter. Students are sorted into
four houses: Red, Yellow, Purple and Blue. Over the next few years, they will take part in various activities, such as

cheers, I felt so moved and knew I had found my ‘family’ at school.”
After the sorting, the first competition began. In each house, smaller groups of four to five students worked
together to complete different tasks, such as taking silly photos, modeling their favorite teachers with clay and
playing charades.
Although it was challenging to work with strangers at first, students quickly got to know one another. “The
process of modeling with clay was really fun, and we grew closer as we found better ways to shape it,” said Jiang
Yuanyuan from the Blue House. “We were surprised to win a prize, which made us even prouder as a team.”

In a big win for the planet, renewable energy passed coal to become the world’s main source of electricity in
the first half of this year, according to new data from the global energy think tank Ember.
Electricity demand continues to rise worldwide. Despite this, the strong growth of solar and wind energy not
only met the increased demand but also contributed to a small drop in coal and gas use, according to the BBC. In
the first half of the year, solar power made up most of the growth, meeting 83 percent of the rise in electricity
demand. Other renewables such as wind power also grew by more than 7 percent.
Among the countries that contributed to this shift, China and India were the main drivers of growth, according
to the Ember report. It shows that in the first half of this year, China alone added more renewable energy than the
rest of the world combined, leading to a 2percent fall in its use of fossil fuels (化石燃料). Over the same period,
renewable energy in India grew three times faster than electricity demand, causing its coal and gas use to drop
by3.1 percent and 34 percent.
Developed regions like the US and the European Union (EU), however, saw the opposite happen. In the US,
demand for electricity grew faster than the supply of clean energy, leading to greater use of fossil fuels. And in the
EU, months of weak wind and water power led to a rise in coal and gas use, as reported by the BBC.
Lower-income countries produced the most solar energy—58 percent of the total, according to the BBC. This
is mainly due to big price cuts, which made solar power more affordable. For example, in 2024, Pakistan bought
solar panels that could produce twice as much power as the year before. African countries are also seeing a solar
boom, with panel imports rising 60 percent year on year.
This achievement is seen by experts as an important turning point. Ember senior analyst Malgorzata Wiatros-
Motyka told the BBC that it “marks the beginning of a shift where clean power is keeping pace with demand
growth”.

On Sept 22, the Chinese navy announced that three types of aircraft, including the J-35,had completed their
takeoff and landing training on the Fujian aircraft carrier (航空母舰).They used the ship’s electromagnetic
catapults (电磁弹射) for these tests. This achievement makes China the second country to use an advanced
electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS). Besides, the Fujian is the world’s first non-nuclear-powered
aircraft carrier to use EMALS.
Catapults and ski jumps are two main methods to help aircraft take off from short runways while keeping
carriers lighter and cheaper, as reported by Interesting Engineering.
Ski-jump systems are easier to equip and maintain and have been popular since the Cold War. However, they
limit how much weight an aircraft can carry, including fuel and weapons.
Catapult systems, on the other hand, allow aircraft to launch faster and farther and can handle heavier planes.
Traditional catapults use steam power, as explained by Naval MarineArchive. They can speed up a 20- ton aircraft
from 0 to 266 kilometers per hour in just two seconds. However, steam catapults need 30 to 60 minutes to build up
pressure. After eight to10 launches, the pressure drops, requiring a 30- minute break to “reboil the water”. Once a
launch begins, the push cannot be adjusted, which can be a problem if the settings are incorrect.
China’s EMALS, however, can be ready in just 15 minutes, according to The China Academy. Its push is
strong but gentler, and it can be adjusted during launch to ensure a safe takeoff speed. Thanks to an advanced
electric system developed by a team led by Chinese scientist Ma Weiming, each EMALS- assisted launch on the
Fujian uses only 30kilowatt- hours(the energy provided by a thousand watts in one hour) of electricity. This is
much less than the 630 kilowatt- hours needed by the USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier.

M: Are you leaving any equipment behind?
W: Well, it depends on what I am going to buy. I’m going to have gas, so I guess I’ll need my gas cooker. I’ll take
the fridge, too. But I plan to buy a new dishwasher, so the old one will stay where it is.
M: Are there wooden floors in any of the other rooms besides the living room?
W: The bedroom also has wooden floors. Now let me show you the bedroom.
M: Ah, I must say I really admire the choice of the wall color. It’s quite appealing.
W: I’m glad you like it. I chose it myself. And there is a nice view from the window.
M: OK. I will talk about this with my wife and reply to you later.
W: OK. I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

M: Jane, there are no tickets for the Black Fox or Moon star concerts, but my parents have got some for Crowd 5.
Do you want to come?
W: Yeah, Tom!
M: Mum found out about it online. There are posters in town now and advert s on the radio too.
W: Sounds great. When’s the concert?
M: We wanted tickets for 19th June, but there aren’t any, so we are going on the 23rd instead. The tour ends on the
25th.
W: Brilliant. Where are we sitting?
M: The seats at the front were really expensive, so Mom got ones on the side. You can’t see much on the back.
W: I can’t wait Let’s talk more after school tomorrow.
M: OK. Shall I see you on the playground?
W: Fine, I’ll be there at 4. I need to go to the library before that and I’ve got sports club later, so we can’t talk for
long.
M: No problem.

W: Today I will introduce a tour to a famous house. It was the family home of Sir Paul 麦Cartney of the famous
group The Beatles. It is open to the public on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from April to September and
on Saturdays only from October to March. A minibus to the house leaves from the Albert Docks four times daily on
these days. Tickets are$5.50 for adults and 2.50 for children and the family tickets are $12.50 for two adults and a
child. There is also a small shop at the house where souvenirs and gifts can be bought. Visitors are asked to note
that food is not available at the house.
Visitors to the house will be able to see much of the original furniture on the ground and first floors, together with
many photographs of John, Paul, George and Ringo in the early days of The Beatles. They also can hear recordings
of the songs themselves and of friends and neighbors of The Beatles talking about their memories. Visitors are
reminded that all handbags and cameras must be left at the entrance to the house, and that they are not permitted to
take photos inside the house. Wheelchair users can visit most of the ground floor of the house, but will not be able
