When I was told to play for a drama competition, I became nervous. I had never done anything like this
before. But after reading Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, I was excited about what was to come. The story was great
and sentences were so funny. I wanted to give it a go .
I was playing Sir Toby Belch, a very funny old knight (骑士) . I had to remember a lot of sentences and very
funny old words. I worked hard in order to act well, like a real knight from the old days. But the most difficult job
was to be funny in all my acting. This is quite different from the way I am in real life.
"OK. It's time to be a different me now!" I said to myself. At first, I couldn't do anything naturally. I don't
know what to do when acting in this silly way. But I always told myself that I was Sir Toby now and I should forget
who I really was. Even when I was in the bath, I was thinking about Sir Toby’s words and actions and trying to do
everything like Sir Toby did.
The competition day finally came. When it was my turn to perform, I took a deep breath and began my part. I
tried hard to make my words clear enough to be understood and my actions funny enough to make everybody
laugh. When the results were finally read out, I immediately knew we had won first prize. I made it.
From this experience, I've come to know that I can be a different person. It doesn't mean I've changed my
personality, but I can do something I had never imagined possible.

"Why do I live? Why do I wish for anything, or do anything? Is there anything in my
life that will not be destroyed by my death?" Like Leo Tolstoy, the famous Russian writer,
many people ask these difficult questions. Tolstoy spent his whole life trying to answer
these difficult questions.
As a young man, he thought people could achieve perfection if they tried hard
enough. So he worked very hard to be the best in everything. He thought that he would find meaning and truth in
success.
In 1850s. Tolstoy wrote his first stories. He wrote about his life in the army. He also told stories about his
childhood. These works were published and Tolstoy became a well-known writer.
He earned the respect he always wanted. Many rich and smart men met and talked with Tolstoy. Some of them
were writers like him. They talked a lot about faith ( 信仰) and the meaning of life. But soon Tolstoy recognized
that these men were not perfect. Now he knew they could not answer his questions about faith.
So in the 1860s, Tolstoy tried a different way to find the meaning of life. He opened a school for the children
of his serfs-the people who worked on his land. These workers were very poor. He wanted to help them because he
thought they were more honest than the rich people he knew.
Tolstoy learned a lot from his workers. He understood how they worked hard to support their
families. He began to believe that marriage and family would give his life meaning. So in 1862, Leo Tolstoy
married a young woman named Sonya Behrs.
The next 15 years were the best years of Tolstoy's life. It was during this time that he wrote his most famous
books-War and Peace and Anna Karenina. Many experts say that War and Peace is one of the greatest books everwritten. In these books, Tolstoy believed humans should live a simple life and take care of their families. Tolstoy
thought this would satisfy him and bring him happiness.
Leo Tolstoy is still a very respected writer today. His faith and writings have influenced many
people all over the world.

Will it be too hard to study art?
“Art does not solve problems, but tells us their existence (存在),” famous Polish sculptor (雕塑家) Magdalena
Abakanowicz once said. “Arts education, on the other hand, does solve problems.”
The high school entrance exams (中考) for Chinese Junior 3 students are mainly about academic (学术类的)
subjects, such as math and Chinese. But starting from 2022, they will be tested in areas like music and art.
On Oct 16, the Ministry of Education (MOE) said that fine arts will be included in high school entrance exams in
more provinces and cities by 2022. Twelve cities in six provinces have already started the practice, includingNanjing and Qingdao. The scores for these subjects are from 10 to 40 points.
This is being done to encourage primary and secondary schools to provide more fine arts classes. They should
cover subjects such as music, painting, calligraphy (书法), dance, drama and opera, The Paper noted.
“Aesthetic (艺术的) education is not just about teaching students how to paint, sing or dance – it’s about the
ability to appreciate artistic beauty, which is very important for students’ mental (心理的) health,” Fan Di’an,
president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, told China Daily.
However, the change has caused heated discussion. Many students and their parents worry about this new policy
will bring too much extra (额外的) work. They think that since students already have heavy academic workloads
(压力), adding new testing material would make things worse.
It was also pointed out that not every student would be talented enough to be good at these subjects. “It’s really
hard for tone-deaf (五音不全的) people like me to remember melodies (旋律). So I need to do extra practice before
music tests,” Zhao Hanfang, a 15-year-old student from Yunnan, told newspapers. “So if music is included in the
high school entrance exams, I might be too much stressed.”
In response to (作为对……的回应) this, Jiangsu authorities said that the tests would be based on basic
knowledge that comes from the students’ textbooks. The extra workload will not be difficult and shouldn’t put too
much pressure on students, China Business Herald noted.
37. From Magdalena Abakanowicz, we know that _____.
A. art is the key to all problems
B. arts education is more important than art
C. knowing art can make life better
D. the existence of art is meaningless
38. What do we know about the policy of the MOE in the story?
A. High school entrance exams will not be changed.
B. Music and art will get the same position as academic subjects.
C. Twelve cities will carry out the policy by 2022.
D. The policy reflects the importance of arts.
39. What are paragraphs 6 and 7 mainly about?
A. Some problems students might face.
B. Too much schoolwork makes things worse.
C. How people feel about art.D. How to deal with the extra work brought by the policy.
40. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Students will be much busier because of the policy.
B. The art tests can pick out talented students.
C. The art tests will focus on basic knowledge.
D. The policy is set for students who is gifted for arts.
