Knitwear (针织品) might not be the immediate expectation on the runway at London Fashion Week, but
26-year-old Shonagh Murray is redefining its potential. From Birmingham, Shonagh discovered knitting in 2017
during a hospital stay, a creative coping mechanism born from struggling with her physical and mental health. “I
just loved the cyclical and rhythmic nature of knitting; I found it very therapeutic ( 疗愈的),” she explains. “I’m
neurodiverse and there is something about the constant counting of numbers that is soothing.”
Knitting quickly evolved from a personal balm into a booming brand. After gaining recognition online,
Shonagh launched Shone, her knitwear label renowned for its bold, colourful, and unique creations. “My pieces
are very unique; they’re not normal knitwear,” Shonagh states. “They stand for quite a lot of different things. The
pieces are very bold and I like the people who wear them to feel confident and not afraid to express themselves.”
Her latest collection, “Girlhood Nostalgia”, captures this spirit. Inspired by her childhood, it features
playful dresses and skirts decorated with bows and pastel colors, seeking to reconnect wearers with their inner
child and a joyful, inquisitive approach to life. This collection’s distinctive charm caught the eye of the fashion
world, leading to Shonagh’s desired invitation to exhibit at London Fashion Week.
Shone is now Shonagh’s full-time endeavour. In stark contrast to the mass-produced fashion industry, she
hand-makes each garment using biodegradable yarn, championing sustainable practices. Shonagh also encourages
others to embrace the creative process, celebrating the joy and uniqueness found in making one’s own clothes over
factory-made alternatives. Her journey is a powerful testament to the transformative power of craft, personal
expression, and conscious creation.

In the stillness of a winter’s night, a snow leopard was out hunting into the livestock corral ( 畜栏) on
Rinchen Lama’s farm, high in the hills of Dolpa in Nepal. Rinchen remembers the scene the following morning:
“There was wool and blood everywhere. I lost 37 sheep and goats, almost my entire livelihood.” A few months
later, another attack. Rinchen’s horse was killed. Everyone living in Dolpa can tell about the powerful predators
(捕食者). Those farm animals didn’t stand a chance.
The creatures are listed as vulnerable animals by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Their
numbers are thought to be declining partly as the population of their wild prey decreases sharply. Domestic horses
in particular have become an important food source for snow leopards. Farmers who lose livestock sometimes
choose to kill them. “We’ve been told conserving snow leopards is important, but for communities like ours, they
make our life very difficult,” Rinchen says.
Tshiring Lhamu Lama, a Nepali conservationist, is working to change the attitude. Supported by the Snow
Leopard Conservancy, she, along with local herders, designed and built Dolpa’s first leopard-proof corrals. These
fences proved highly effective in preventing night-time killings.
However, according to Ghana Gurung, director of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in Nepal, as
long as livestock feed in the snow leopard’s habitat, it will be impossible to stop all predation by these big cats.
Tshiring hopes to source additional funds to make up for continued losses. In 2020, Tshiring established a local
tour operator, Snow leopard Journey. The programme helped locals to set up accommodation for tourists and
trained people to become snow leopard guides.
Overall, in places where snow leopards killed livestock on a day-to-day basis, tourism has developed,
which is bringing in 10 times more than they had earned from raising livestock. Killings of snow leopards have
decreased sharply. “For me, I need to preserve both — snow leopards for the ecosystem, and livelihoods for the
people.” Tshiring says.
32.What can we know about the snow leopard’s attack from paragraph 1?
A.The livestock narrowly escaped it.
B.Rinchen’s family were injured in it.
C.It was a rare occurrence in Dolpa.
D.It caused a heavy economic blow to farmers.
33.What was the farmers’ initial attitude towards snow leopard conservation?

Walking in the city is very different from walking in the park. A psychology study suggests urban
environments can slow your step and possibly increase your mental load. 36 It can ease your mind and
quicken your pace. The findings show that natural settings may potentially reduce cognitive (认知的) tiredness
and improve reaction time straight away. 37
The first of the two experiments focused on people’s way of walking and cognitive load. During this trial,
participants were fitted with sensors and a dozen motion control cameras were set up to watch them repeatedly
walk down a 15-meter room at their natural speed. The wall opposite them showed an image of either a nature
scene or a city scene. 38 On the whole, when walking in city settings, people considered that they felt
more uncomfortable and they walked at a slower pace, indicating a higher cognitive load.
39 In the trial, participants were asked to distinguish between basic visual shapes on the computer
while also in the presence of a natural or urban image (the same ones from the first experiment).
Measuring reaction time in both natural and urban settings, the team found the results supporting their idea.
In urban environments, participants were slower in distinguishing among simple shapes. 40 Our brains
take longer to process information. However, more research is needed to prove that idea.
A.Nature influences us in many ways.
B.The second dug into some higher-level cognitive processes.
C.A walk in nature does the opposite, though.
D.They said they couldn’t concentrate properly after walking.
E.After each, participants were asked to rate their discomfort.
F.The reason is that urban environments are more distracting.
G.The study includes two experiments with two different approaches.

I tried not to worry, but I was scared. The job I had lost was a good job, and I was good at it. It wasn't my
fault that I lost it; it was just what happens when a government contract isn’t renewed.
My full-time job now was finding a full-time job. I searched diligently and tried everything I knew to find
work, but without success. Weeks went by. If I didn’t find a job soon, I wouldn’t be able to pay the rent on my
apartment — a modest two-bedroom in a four-story walkup. And then what?
It was the early 1970s, and job hunting was done the 1970s way. Print copies of your résumé (简历). Mark
the jobs you think you might qualify for. Write a hello-I’m-wonderful cover letter, put it in an envelope with your
résumé, and mail it to the employer. Make phone calls and knock on every door.
One Saturday morning, the knock came on my door.
Silently grumbling (抱怨), I arose and walked down the hall, temporarily abandoning my collection of
Help Wanted ads and stack of résumés on the kitchen table. Why was it that every time I got my daughter settled
down with her toys and started my job search, someone interrupted me?
“Hi,” said a smiling woman in jeans when I opened the door. “I’m Melba. I just moved in upstairs. Can I
borrow your phone for a minute? I’d like to call the phone company and ask them to turn mine on.”
A neighbor in need — of course, I would help. “Hi, Melba. Sure, come on in. I’m Carole,” I said, leading
the attractive woman who looked about my age — early thirties — to the phone mounted on my kitchen wall.
“Help yourself while I run into the other room and check on my little one.”
Returning a few minutes later, I found Melba holding the phone to her ear and looking down at my résumé
on the table. Apparently, the phone-company rep had placed her on hold for a moment.
