W: You’ve saved me a lot of trouble. Let me treat you to a coffee?
M: That’s kind, but I have to hurry for a connection. Just happy I caught you.

18.How did the speaker’s grandfather die?
A.Due to a disease.
B.During a charity event.
C.Because of a plane crash.
19.Why did the speaker decide to skydive?
A.To help some patients.
B.To have fun with friends.
C.To overcome a fear of heights.
20.What does the speaker think was the best aspect about the skydive?
A.Falling from 2,000 meters.
B.Hearing stories about Alzheimer’s.
C.Raising a large amount of money.
【答案】18.A 19.A 20.B
M: If you’d told me a year ago that I’d be jumping out of a plane, I’d have laughed. I hated heights.
It’s not the kind of thing I enjoy doing with friends! But something changed after my grandad passed away from
Alzheimer’s. I wanted to do something meaningful that could help others affected by the same disease. So, I
signed up for a charity skydive. I’d never even done a bake sale before!
We watched a safety video and we jumped from 4,000 meters. The free fall lasted for one minute, and we
dropped at 200 kilometers per hour. I worked out that meant I fell roughly 3,300 meters before the parachute (降
落伞) opened.
It was peaceful. You’d expect panic, but instead I felt calm. Everything looked so small, and yet I felt part of
something huge,
The great part? We raised £8,452 — the highest amount anyone in our area has ever raised for Alzheimer’s. But
even better than the total was hearing people talk about their experience with this illness. So many had been
through the same as my grandad.
I still don’t love heights, so I’ve not overcome that fear. But I’ve learned that sometimes, doing something
scary opens doors — and hearts.

The concept of a milkman dropping off farm-fresh milk and cream on the doorstep seems old-fashioned,
but it’s still something that happens in villages and small towns around the world. One such village is the
centuries-old city of St. Albans in England.
For the past 47 years, Michael Tutton has filled that role. Each day, “Mick the Milk” was up before dawn to
load his milk float, and then he’d visit with residents as he made his rounds. While he delivered milk, eggs, and
other necessary items, he also remembered every family’s milestone. If someone had a birthday, he left a small
piece of candy or special yogurt on their door. He loved doing charity runs and other events, raising thousands of
dollars over the years that went right back into the community.
In 2023, his milk float was damaged beyond repair, and he decided it was time to retire. Naturally, his
beloved residents couldn’t let him go without a proper send-off! Without telling him, they planned a big party for
him.
Kate Crick, who organized Tutton’s retirement party, said, “We had Tutton delivering our milk for more
than 45 years. He knows everyone and even remembers all the children from the streets.” Tutton has never learned
to drive, but that has never stopped him. He would walk or get the bus from Welwyn to St. Albans, just to pick up
the milk float and deliver milk to his loyal customers.
Tutton was moved by the support of his community, and sad to bid farewell to a job that had meant much
more to him than income. “It was amazing and very emotional. I’m definitely going to keep in touch with
everybody I can,” he continued. “My heart is there.”
It’s clear that this milkman made a huge impact on the world around him, simply by being kind, caring, and
considerate of others. Congratulations on nearly 50 years on the job, Tutton!
24.What can we know about Michael Tutton from paragraph 2?
A.He raised money by selling milk.
B.He started the delivery job in his forties.
C.He had a flexible work schedule.
D.He got along well with the locals.
25.What made Michael Tutton decide to retire?
A.His weak physical condition.
B.Increasing delivery distance.
C.His broken delivery float.
D.Low demand for milk delivery.
26.How did Michael Tutton feel on the day of his retirement?
A.Touched and sorrowful.
B.Excited and hopeful.
C.Anxious but relieved.
D.Disappointed but peaceful.
27.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To show a milkman’s devotion and kindness.
B.To introduce the influence of milk delivery.
C.To state milkmen’s challenges in rural areas.
D.To record a milkman’s retirement party.

What do you do as spring sets in? Taking off your warm winter coat, and putting it away? For humans,
taking off winter coats is a one-minute task. As it turns out, not all animals are so capable.
Snowshoe rabbits live in the mountain ranges of North America, and have a pure white coat during the
winter time to match the snowy surroundings and to help avoid being caught. And they take off winter coats for a
darker brown fur color to match the dirt and leaves after the snow melts in the spring. Sounds like a great way to
escape from their natural enemies, right? However, concern begins when scientists begin looking at how the
warming climate will impact the rabbits.
There are more and more white rabbits in the middle of a brown habitat, where the snow has already melted
away. This is a problem for them, as they are more easily seen by their natural enemies, giving them a “mismatch”
problem. Snowshoe rabbits time the coat change in spring from white to brown based on the change in day length,
not the temperature or the presence of snow in their habitat. Nowadays, the snow is melting a week on average
before the change in day length signals the change in coat color, leaving the rabbits exposed to their natural
enemies.
Some predictions put the rabbits in up to 8 weeks of a white coat in a brown, snowless habitat by the end of
this century. This timeline could spell doom for their populations, as their natural enemies will have nearly 2
months of easily spotting them.
Fortunately, scientists have found areas with snowshoe rabbits in color from white to brown in the same
place, meaning the timing of the coat change can be influenced by the environment. Snowshoe rabbits reproduce
quickly, and if the color change timing is passed down then it is possible for rabbits to change coats accordingly.
By protecting areas with variable ones, we can give snowshoe rabbits the opportunity to adapt to the changing
climate.
28.Why does the author mention humans’ taking off winter coats?
A.To stress climate change is influential.
B.To imply animals should be taken care of.
C.To show bonds between man and animals.
D.To lead to the problem of snowshoe rabbits.
29.What has made scientists worry about snowshoe rabbits?
A.They fail to keep their white color.
B.They are active in freezing winter.
C.They can’t get rid of white fur when snow melts.
D.They are easily caught by hunters on snowy days.
30.What can be inferred from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4?
A.More rabbits will be killed.
B.Rabbits’ enemies are stronger.
C.The rabbit population will shoot.
D.The rabbits may die out in future.
31.Which of the following can best conclude the text?
A.Natural Selection
B.Importance of Colors
C.Survival of the Fittest
D.Timing of Coat Change
【答案】28.D 29.C 30.A 31.C
For humans, taking off winter coats is a one-minute task. As it turns out,
not all animals are so capable.(对人类来说,脱下冬衣是一分钟的任务。
Nowadays, the snow is melting a week on average before the change in
day length signals the change in coat color, leaving the rabbits exposed to their natural enemies.(如今,平均来说,
Some predictions put the rabbits in up to 8 weeks of a white coat in a
brown, snowless habitat by the end of this century. This timeline could spell doom for their populations, as their
natural enemies will have nearly 2 months of easily spotting them.(一些预测指出,到本世纪末,雪鞋兔在棕
故选A 项。
Fortunately, scientists have found areas with snowshoe
rabbits in color from white to brown in the same place, meaning the timing of the coat change can be influenced
by the environment. Snowshoe rabbits reproduce quickly, and if the color change timing is passed down then it is
D
The future of space food could be simple and strange. For decades, astronauts have relied mostly on
prepackaged food or the occasional grown vegetables during their visits to outer space. With missions beyond
Earth’s orbit in sight, a NASA led competition is hoping to change all that and start a new era of sustainable space
food.
To solve the problem of feeding astronauts on long duration missions, the US space agency started the
Deep Space Food Challenge in January 2022, asking companies to propose novel ways to develop sustainable
foods for future missions. About 200 companies entered, which were narrowed down to 11 teams in January 2023
as part of phase 2. On November 19, NASA announced the teams that will progress into the final phase of the
competition, with some winners to be announced in March, 2025.
All teams had to show systems that could operate for three years and feed a crew of four on a future space
mission. The proposals did not need to supply a crew’s entire diet, but they did need to create a variety of
nutritious foods to the astronauts.
One company took an incredibly unusual approach to the task. Air Company, based in New York, designed
a system that could use the carbon dioxide breathed out by astronauts in space to produce alcohol, which can then
be fed to yeast (酵母) and produce “something that’s suitable for eating”. “It’s making food out of the air.” says
Stafford Sheehan, co-founder and chief technology officer of Air Company, “It sounds like magic, but when you
see it actually operating, it’s much more simple.”
Interstellar Lab in Florida had a different approach. Its system, called NUCLEUS, is a set of small capsules.
Each is self-contained, with its own temperature, watering system, etc. That would allow different vegetables to be
planted so that astronauts can easily grow their own food in space.
While the winning ideas from the Deep Space Food Challenge won’t immediately be used by astronauts,
they show what might be possible on future missions. “You’ve got to start years in advance to make sure you have
the capability in place when you need it,” says Ralph Fritsche, senior project manager for space crop production at
NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
32.Why was the Deep Space Food Challenge launched?
A.To find tasty foods for astronauts.
B.To found a space food supply center.
C.To develop a new source of space food.
D.To attract astronauts to food exploration.
33.Which might be the requirement to become the winning company?
A.Future space missions lasting three years.
B.Entire diets for long-lasting space research.
C.Concrete proposals involving a crew of four.
D.Sustainable supply of nutritious space foods.
34.What do paragraphs 4 and 5 focus on?
A.Describing future space food.
B.Showing solutions from competing companies.
C.Introducing the current status of space food.
D.Explaining the nutritional needs of space food.
35.What is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Astronauts produce more space food.
B.Space explorers face a lack of nutrition.
C.New types of space foods are on the way.
D.Future space missions last even longer.

I’m writing to share an unforgettable experience of being a volunteer tour guide in my city. Last weekend,
I served as a tour guide for some foreign tourists. The most impressive thing was that I helped a foreign couple

grateful. It made me feel really helpful.
Through this experience, I realized that being a tour guide not only allows me to practice my English, but
also enables me to show foreigners the charm of our city. This experience made me aware of how important it is
to use my language skills to help others.

When we arrived in Tournus, my cousin Gabriel and I parked our bikes near the dock (码头) and walked to
the town square. We’d just ridden 33 kilometers. We were starving and planned to get lunch and then ride back to
Macon, a small city in France on the Saône River. I was spending the summer there with Gabriel’s family.
It was market day. Locals moved about, filling their baskets with groceries. Tourists hunted for souvenirs.
Gabriel and I bought a long, thin loaf of bread called a baguette and some Brie, a soft cheese I’m obsessed with.
As we ate, I noticed a girl wearing a Basketball T-shirt. She smiled at us and stopped to buy pastries with
someone that I guessed was her mom because they looked so much alike.
I saw them again by the river. They sat on a bench enjoying their pastries in front of a long, narrow
riverboat named Voyageur, which had docked (靠岸) earlier. Then they boarded the boat. It was preparing to leave
when I spotted a colorful shopping bag on the bench. The girl had left it! I looked up. Some passengers were
gathering on the upper deck of the riverboat, including the girl and her mom.
I held up the bag and waved it to get their attention while Gabriel called to them in French and English.
“Excusez-moi, mesdames! Excuse me, ladies! ”
When the girl noticed the bag, she opened her mouth in surprise. But her face fell as the boat started to pull
away from the dock. She didn’t think she’d get her stuff back.
’Maybe we can throw it to her, Hugo! ” Gabriel said.
“It’s too light, ” I said. “It would end up in the river. We have to find a way to return it! ”
Running along side the boat, Gabriel learned from a sailor that the boat’s next stop was
Macon — our destination as well. It would take the boat just under two hours.
“Do you think we can keep up? ” I asked.
Gabriel laughed. “We’re about to find out! ”
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150 个左右;

I threw the bag over my shoulder, and we set off. We pedaled as fast as we could, hoping to catch up with
the Voyageur before it reached Macon. The wind rushed past us, and I could hear Gabriel’s heavy breathing beside
me. “We have to make it!” I shouted, though I wasn’t sure if we would. The road seemed endless, but the thought
of returning the bag to the girl kept us going. As we rounded a bend, I saw the riverboat in the distance, moving
steadily along the river.
When we finally arrived at Macon’s dock, the Voyageur was already there. Passengers were disembarking,
and I spotted the girl and her mom among them. I ran up to them, out of breath, and handed over the bag. “You
left this on the bench,” I said. The girl’s eyes widened in surprise, and she hugged the bag tightly. “Thank you so
much!” she exclaimed. Her mom smiled and thanked us too. I realized then that helping others could bring such
joy, which was a feeling far better than any souvenir or pastry.
