In 2022, feeling unwell at home, celebrated novelist and screenwriter Hanif Kureishi fell, broke his neck
and woke up paralyzed, unable to move his hands or body. For a year, he recovered in hospitals before returning
home, where he now relies on full-time care.
Kureishi poured his anger and depression into writing. Just days after the accident, he began dictating ( 口
述) his work Shattered to his partner and son. The book explores his loss of independence and the shame of
relying on others. Yet writing gave him purpose: “Even on painkillers, I wrote daily blogs. People cared about my
story—it kept me going,” he says.
Today, Kureishi uses a wheelchair and cannot stand or hold objects. Despite limited mobility, he works
daily. “My job — talking and writing — saved me,” he explains. Many paralyzed patients cannot return to work,
but Kureishi continues creating. “I earn money and support my family. I write more now than before,” he adds.
His determination overcomes physical limits, proving creativity develops well in tough times. Each morning, he
tackles physical therapy (治疗) with the same discipline he applies to writing, viewing both as acts of rebellion
against his condition.
Reflecting on his accident, he recalls hospital patients with similar stories: a man who jumped into an
empty pool and another who tripped over a garden tool. “These unpredictable moments change everything. You
are upset, asking ‘Why me?’, but anger gradually goes away when you rebuild purpose,” he says. Kureishi
acknowledges the unfairness but focuses on what he can control — his work and relationships. He emphasizes
gratitude for his support system, crediting loved ones for helping him handle daily challenges.
Looking ahead, Kureishi remains ambitious. He’s writing another book, working together on a film with
director Luca Guadagnino, and eagerly awaits Shattered’s US release. His days combine creativity and routine:
mornings devoted to writing, afternoons to physical therapy, and evenings spent brainstorming new ideas.
“Disability isn’t the end,” he insists. “It’s a new chapter — one where I write my own rules.”
24.What happened to Hanif Kureishi in 2022?
A.He had a life-changing accident.
B.He had a big argument with his son.
C.He suddenly lost his ability to speak.

25.What does the underlined word “rebellion” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Doubt.
B.Struggle.
C.Argument.
D.Complaint.
26.Why does Kureishi mention other patients’ stories?
A.To highlight the predictability of events.
B.To explain the process of physical therapy.
C.To show the importance of a positive mentality.
D.To describe the challenges of writing while disabled.
27.What can we learn about Kureishi from the last paragraph?

The human voice is a delicate thing. Each person’s distinctive voice is produced when air from the lungs
causes the vocal cords (声带) to vibrate (震动). These vocal cords can easily get damaged. According to a 2005
study, 30% of the population will experience a voice disorder at some point in their life.
In a study published in the journal Nature Communications this week, a group of bioengineering
researchers from the University of California have put forward an attractive solution. They have designed and
tested a soft patch (小片) that can be stuck onto a person’s neck, where it will pick up muscle movements and,
with the help of machine-learning algorithms (算法) that process the signals, translate them into speech.
When a person loses their voice today, the easiest fix is to turn to typing, texting, or writing notes to
communicate. Typing can be convenient but slow, says Jun Chen, the paper’s lead author, and writing notes is
only possible in good lighting. The new solution would therefore be able to clear all these hurdles.
Dr. Chen’s device works based on something called the magnetoelastic (磁电的) effect. Essentially, when
tiny magnetic (磁性的) bits are placed into soft materials, their magnetic properties can change as the material is
stretched.
When the throat muscles move under the soft patch, the resulting magnetoelastic effect can be changed into
electrical signals. In a test with eight participants, the variations can be changed by electrical signals.
Researchers recorded the signals as the subjects spoke and mouthed five different sentences. They then
trained a machine-learning model which was then able to predict which of the five sentences the participants
spoke — whether aloud or in silence — with more than 90% accuracy.
There is a way to go yet, for now the device can only recognize the five phrases it was trained on. Plus, to
make it practical at scale, the researchers will need to collect a lot more data.
28.In paragraph 1, the author mainly wants to tell us that ________.
A.lungs are easily damaged
B.the human voice is unique
C.vocal cords vibrate to produce sound
D.voice disorders are a problem worthy of attention
29.Why does the author mention the magnetoelastic effect?
A.To explain the working principle.
B.To introduce a key technical component.
C.To highlight the device’s market potential.
D.To emphasize the challenges of voice disorder treatment.
30.What is the function of the soft patch?
A.Predicting five different sentences.
B.Destroying the background magnetic field.
C.Slowing the movements of throat muscles.
D.Helping turn muscle movements into electrical signals.
31.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Predicting the Importance of Voice Restoration
B.Using Algorithms in Bioengineering Research
C.Overcoming Voice Loss with an Innovative Patch
D.Finding the Principle of Communication Devices

For decades, people have argued whether wood or plastic cutting boards are safer. This debate involves
both material properties and how these surfaces interact with invisible threats like bacteria and microplastics.
In the 1990s, food safety researcher Dean Cliver conducted experiments that overturned common
assumptions, demonstrating how wood’s natural architecture gives it an unexpected edge. When he added both
materials with harmful bacteria like Salmonella, plastic boards kept germs within knife scratches (划痕) even after
careful washing, whereas wooden boards exhibited a remarkable self-cleaning mechanism. When bacteria were
placed on wood surfaces, they disappeared within hours. This happens because wood’s small spaces naturally
absorb the bacteria, trapping and drying them through capillary action (毛细作用).
Plastic boards, though praised for their affordability and ease of cleaning, present two problems. While their
smooth surface resists initial pollution, repeated knife use creates tiny grooves (凹槽) where bacteria boom and a
study found that scratched plastic boards harbor eight times more bacteria than new ones. Furthermore, plastic
boards release microplastics, tiny plastic particles that gradually build up in the environment. Researchers
calculate that the amount released by one board each year can reach the weight of a standard credit card.
The path to safety lies not in choosing a “perfect” material but in understanding how to maximize each
board’s strengths through proper care. Plastic boards are ideal for raw meats provided they’re replaced every six to
twelve months before deep scratches form. Wood demands more attentive care: it should be handwashed
immediately after use, smoothed its surface regularly, and stored upright. Both types must be cleaned thoroughly
after each use, as even vegetables can carry bacteria.
Ultimately, the safest choice depends less on the material itself than on the user’s commitment. Home
cooks should treat cutting boards as vital kitchen tools that need regular care, including thorough cleaning with
precise techniques, weekly cleaning using a bleach-water mixture, and timely replacement when wear leads to
potential dangers. Through these practices, daily cooking activities become effective ways to ensure food safety
and prevent health risks. After all, the humbles t kitchen tool becomes extraordinary when understood through
science.
32.What did Cliver’s experiments reveal about wood?
A.It resists knife scratches.
B.It stops water absorption.
C.It lasts longer than plastic.
D.It naturally prevents bacteria.
33.What is the main focus of Paragraph 3?
A.Advantages of plastic boards.
B.Hidden risks of plastic boards.
C.Pollution caused by microplastic.
D.Comparison between wood and plastic.
34.Why should plastic boards be replaced periodically?
A.To match kitchen style.
B.To prevent bacterial buildup.
C.To enhance cutting efficiency.
D.To reduce cleaning frequency.
35.What does the author imply about board keeping?
A.Board keeping ensures food safety.
B.Board keeping is necessary and effective.
C.Board keeping is convenient for most cooks.
D.Traditional board care is outdated with new technology.

Last weekend, a group of high-school students, including Tom, Sarah, and their friends, participated in an
environmental protection activity at a nearby river. The activity was organized by their school’s environmental
club to raise awareness about water pollution and encourage people to take action to protect the river.
When they arrived at the riverbank, they were shocked by what they saw. The river was filled with all kinds
of garbage, from plastic bottles to old tires. The water was dark and smelly, and there were hardly any signs of
aquatic life. Tom frowned and said, “This is even worse than we thought. We really need to do something to save
this river.”
The students immediately got to work. They divided themselves into groups. One group started to pick up
the garbage along the riverbank, using long-handled tools to reach the trash floating in the water. Another group
went around to the nearby factories and shops, distributing brochures about environmental protection and
explaining the importance of not polluting the river. Sarah was in charge of taking pictures and recording videos to
document the situation and their efforts.
As they were working, a middle-aged man walked by. He looked at the students with curiosity and asked,
“What are you kids doing?” Tom stepped forward and replied, “Sir, we’re trying to clean up this river. It’s in a
really bad state, and we want to make people aware of the problem.” The man nodded, but then he said, “Do you
really think a few kids like you can make a difference? This pollution has been going on for years.” Tom was a bit
discouraged by his words, but he still firmly said, “We have to try. Every little bit helps, right?” The man just
shrugged and walked away.
After a long day of hard work, the riverbank looked much cleaner. However, they knew that this was just a
small step, and there was still a long way to go to fully restore the river’s health...
