The annual cross-country tryout notice was posted on the school bulletin board, creating a tense atmosphere in our class. As the running team captain, I took double responsibility. I needed to compete for a top position and help my best friend Ben qualify for the school team. Ben was a fast runner but lacked steady endurance, which caused him to collapse from tiredness and fail to finish last year's race. |
💡 考点标注:tryout = 选拔赛;qualify for = 取得资格;endurance = 耐力;collapse = 累倒;fail to finish = 未完赛。
To help him achieve his goal, I followed a private arrangement from my coach. I would act as his pacer in the tryout, setting a steady early speed to help him build a comfortable running rhythm and preserve energy for the final stage. The plan was practical, yet it brought me inner unease. Ben always saw me as a fair competitor and trusted me to race side by side with him.
The tryout took place on a misty morning. When the starting gun fired, all runners rushed forward at full speed. I kept a proper lead over Ben to control the pace, constantly aware of his heavy breathing behind me. After running two kilometers, I looked back and found Ben struggling with exhaustion but still closely following my footsteps with full trust. |
💡 考点标注:misty morning = 多雾的早晨(环境伏笔);starting gun fired = 发令枪响;rush forward at full speed = 全速冲出;heavy breathing = 粗重呼吸;struggling with exhaustion = 疲惫挣扎;following my footsteps with full trust = 满信任地跟随我的脚步。
An unexpected accident occurred during the race. My left shoelace came loose, making me trip and fall on the grass. Ben slowed down immediately, caught in a dilemma between pursuing his dream and caring for me. I struggled to my feet and signaled for him to keep running. |
💡 考点标注:shoelace came loose = 鞋带松了;trip and fall = 绊倒;caught in a dilemma = 陷入两难;pursuing his dream = 追逐梦想;struggled to my feet = 挣扎站起;signaled for him to keep running = 示意他继续跑。
We continued the race soon, but my ankle began to ache badly. I could no longer maintain the steady pace, and we gradually fell behind the leading group. Surprisingly, Ben gave up his competitive speed and adjusted his stride to match my awkward movement. Watching his considerate choice, I felt complicated inside, knowing my well-intentioned plan had put us both in an awkward situation. |
💡 考点标注:ankle ache badly = 脚踝剧痛;maintain the steady pace = 维持配速;fall behind the leading group = 落后于第一集团;adjusted his stride to match = 调整步幅配合;considerate choice = 体贴的选择;felt complicated inside = 内心复杂;well-intentioned = 好意的。
不能写Ben二话不说就冲出去,那就违背了原文“Ben adjusted his stride to match”的伏笔。
可以在第二段,队长一瘸一拐地坐下,看着Ben说“I have to tell you something... about the pacer plan”。
比如Ben说“We didn't win the race, but we won something bigger”,或者两人一起看着名单,名单上两个名字并排。
① Q3(us的含义)和Q8(最后一句落在哪)是最重要的两问——答好了,你的立意就比90%的同学高。 ② Q7(配速秘密)是道德深度的来源。
“Ben always saw me as a fair competitor”这一句,是未来秘密揭开时的情感炸药。
“heavy breathing behind me”和“following my footsteps with full trust”是两个关键身体感受,续写中要回响。
“caught in a dilemma”直接告诉我们Ben的内心戏,续写要把这个dilemma展开。
Hardly holding back the pain, I whispered to Ben, “Go ahead. Win this for us.”
“Go ahead. Win this for us.”
When the results were announced later, Ben sought me out, holding the team list.
Hardly holding back the pain, I whispered to Ben, "Go ahead. Win this for us." ① Hardly holding back the pain:现在分词作伴随状语,hardly否定开头=“几乎忍不住”。 ④ Win this for us.:全篇题眼。us = 我们。
When the results were announced later, Ben sought me out, holding the team list. ② results were announced:名单公布。 ③ Ben sought me out:sought是seek的过去式。 ④ holding the team list:道具登场。
这违背了原文“adjusted his stride to match”。 背一句:“We didn't win the race. But together, we won something no stopwatch could measure.” |
② 最容易被忽略的伏笔是“misty morning”——续写中加一句“the fog was beginning to lift”,立刻有了象征意味。
“Hardly holding back the pain, I whispered...”
Hesitating for a second, Ben dropped back and stepped beside me, his stride shortening to match my limp.
With one arm around my shoulder and the other holding my elbow, Ben half-carried me toward the finish line.
Never had I thought a shoelace could change what "winning" really meant.
(It is/was...that...)
It was not the finish line that mattered anymore — it was the boy beside me.
If I had known the pacer plan would end like this, I would have told Ben the truth from the start.
The fog was beginning to lift as we crossed the line together.
Ben, who had dreamed of this team for two years, simply smiled and said, "I didn't come here to win alone."
The fog, which had swallowed the course since dawn, was slowly thinning. Somewhere ahead, the finish tape was barely visible. Behind us, other runners had long disappeared. There was only the sound of two sets of breathing — one ragged, one steady — falling into the same rhythm.
Ben did not run. He slowed, slipped his right arm under mine, and gripped my wrist with his left. He said nothing. He just adjusted his stride — shorter, slower — until my limping steps matched his. Then, step by step, we moved forward together.
I wanted to tell him. I wanted to say: I was never really racing you. The coach made me your pacer. I let you trust me as a fair competitor because I thought I was helping. But now, with his arm holding me up, I understood that the greatest race had nothing to do with pace, and everything to do with who was willing to slow down for you.
Ben's jaw was set. His eyes, which had been fixed on the trail ahead, turned to me for just a second. They were not angry. They were not sad. They were simply sure — the look of someone who had already made up his mind.
示范 "Go?" Ben repeated, almost laughing. "Go where? Finish line without you? Not a chance." He tightened his grip. "We finish this together. That's what us means, remember?"
“Not a chance.” “We finish this together.”
段首句“Win this for us”里的us,起初是“我替你赢”的us;结尾Ben说“We finish this together”,us变成了“我们一起”的us。
升华示范一(环境+动作) Together, we crossed the finish line — last, slow, and forgotten by the scoreboard, but straight, unbroken, side by side. The fog had lifted. Somewhere beyond the tape, the coach was already walking toward us. I looked at Ben. He was looking at me. And for the first time all morning, neither of us was running from anything. |
升华示范二(名单+对话) "Look," Ben said, turning the list around. My name was there, just below his. "Coach added you. Said someone who knows how to slow down for a friend deserves a spot too." He paused. "We didn't win the race, you know. But we won something better." I nodded. I finally understood what "us" had meant all along.
注意一:不要直接喊“This story tells us that friendship is important”。
不要写成“I'm so sorry I lied to you for months”。一句“I have to tell you something”就够了。
背一句万能模板:“I finally understood what 'us' had meant all along.”
Paragraph 1: Hardly holding back the pain, I whispered to Ben, "Go ahead. Win this for us."
Hardly holding back the pain, I whispered to Ben, "Go ahead. Win this for us." For a long moment Ben said nothing. He simply slowed, dropped back beside me, and slipped his arm under mine. "Go?" he repeated, breathless but steady. "Without you? Not a chance." He bent down, retied my loose shoelace with quick, sure fingers, and rose. "We finish together. That's what us means." I wanted to argue, but my ankle sent a sharp warning up my leg. So I let him take my weight, and step by step, limping and leaning, we moved toward the finish line. Behind us the fog was slowly lifting; ahead of us, the tape waited. |
Paragraph 2: When the results were announced later, Ben sought me out, holding the team list.
When the results were announced later, Ben sought me out, holding the team list. I was sitting on the grass, ice already wrapped around my ankle, half-expecting not to see my name. Ben knelt beside me and turned the list around. There, two names, one above the other: Ben Carter, and me. "Coach added you," Ben said quietly. "Said the team needs someone who knows when to slow down." I stared at the paper. "Ben," I said, my throat tight, "I have to tell you something. About the pacer plan. The coach made me —" Ben held up a hand. "I know," he said. "I figured it out two kilometers in. But you know what? You were still the only one who ran beside me." I looked at him, and for the first time all day, I smiled. |
✦ 道具回响:shoelace(系回)、fog(散开)、team list(两人名字)、us(被重新定义)。 ✦ 秘密揭开克制:“I have to tell you something... The coach made me —” 被Ben打断,“I know”。 ✦ 题眼句:“You were still the only one who ran beside me.” |
Paragraph 1: Hardly holding back the pain, I whispered to Ben, "Go ahead. Win this for us."
Hardly holding back the pain, I whispered to Ben, "Go ahead. Win this for us." Ben's face tightened. For three seconds he stood there, his eyes on the finish tape, his dream visibly trembling in the balance. Then he shook his head. "No," he said, and the word was quieter than I expected. "Last year I collapsed alone. I'm not doing that to either of us today." He held out his arm. I took it. We did not sprint. We did not even jog. We walked — limping, leaning, painfully slow — while runners passed us one by one. At the tape, a small crowd of parents paused to applaud, though we had finished dead last. I did not care. The only thing I cared about was that the boy beside me was still beside me. |
Paragraph 2: When the results were announced later, Ben sought me out, holding the team list.
When the results were announced later, Ben sought me out, holding the team list. I was already limping toward the gate, ready to accept that neither of us had qualified. Ben caught my shoulder. "Read it," he said. I looked. To my shock, both our names were there. "Coach," Ben said, half-smiling, "said he'd rather have two runners who finish together than ten who finish alone. Then he looked at me and said something else." Ben paused. "He said, 'You finally learned the difference between winning and finishing.'" I felt a weight I had carried since the tryout notice was posted lift off my chest. "Ben," I said, "about the pacer —" "Save it," he laughed. "We'll talk on our first practice. Now go ice that ankle." |
范文二亮点解析 ✦ 回扣去年伏笔:“Last year I collapsed alone.” ✦ 教练台词点睛:“the difference between winning and finishing”——全篇题眼由教练说出来,高级。 We'll talk on our first practice.” ✦ 高级语法:独立主格“his dream visibly trembling in the balance”、让步状语从句“though we had finished dead last”。 |
1. "Hardly holding back the pain, I whispered to Ben..."
仿写:“Hardly believing my eyes, I...”“Hardly controlling my voice, I...”
2. "For a long moment Ben said nothing."
For a long moment / For three seconds —— 沉默的长度就是情感的重量。
3. "His dream visibly trembling in the balance."
“his dream trembling in the balance”——梦想在天平上摇晃,文学性极强。
4. "Last year I collapsed alone. I'm not doing that to either of us today."
alone vs us;去年 vs 今年。
5. "We did not sprint. We did not even jog. We walked."
6. "The only thing I cared about was that the boy beside me was still beside me."
the boy beside me / still beside me——beside这个词重复,写出“陪伴”的主题。
7. "There, two names, one above the other: Ben Carter, and me."
不用写“my name was on the list”,直接陈列两个名字,画面感更强。
8. "Coach added you. Said the team needs someone who knows when to slow down."
someone who knows when to slow down——既是教练的评价,也是全篇主题。
9. "I finally understood what 'us' had meant all along."
10. "A weight I had carried since the tryout notice was posted lifted off my chest."
11. "Save it. We'll talk on our first practice. Now go ice that ankle."
12. "He finally learned the difference between winning and finishing."
5(We did not... We did not even... We...)

20. We did not beat the clock that morning. But we beat the distance that had grown between us.
For three heartbeats he stood there, his eyes fixed on mine. ② I expected him to sprint. Instead, he stepped closer. ③ The words hung between us in the mist. Ben's answer was a single shake of his head. ④ Ben's jaw tightened. Then he did the last thing I expected — he slowed down. ⑤ I tried to push him away. He would not be pushed. |
Somewhere the scoreboard flickered. But all I saw was Ben, beside me, at last. ② The fog was gone. So, finally, was the secret. ③ We may have finished last. But we finished — together, and that was enough. ④ I finally understood: "us" was never about winning. It was about not letting go. ⑤ On the list, our names stood side by side. Just as they always should have. |
Ben nodded. "Sure, good luck!" Then he sprinted forward and disappeared into the mist. I limped along alone, my ankle screaming. When the results came out, Ben had qualified. I had not. He came to me holding the list, smiling. "We did it!" he said. 【问题】① Ben没有“adjusted his stride to match”的伏笔回响;② 队长心理戏缺失;③ 结尾“we did it”违背了原文“complicated inside”的情绪;④ 把友谊写成了功利的“我进了就行”。 |
反面教材二(情节失控,送医院) Pain shot through my ankle. I fell to the ground. Ben ran back. "Are you okay?" he shouted. An ambulance came. They took me to hospital. The doctor said I had broken my ankle. Ben held my hand. When the results were announced, Ben had qualified. He came to the hospital and told me. I was happy for him. |
反面教材三(结尾喊口号) Ben helped me to the finish line. We walked slowly. When the results came, we were both on the list. "Friendship is the most important thing," Ben said. "Yes," I said, "a friend in need is a friend indeed." We smiled. The end. 【问题】① “a friend in need is a friend indeed”是小学生谚语;② “The end”直接出现在高考作文里是致命伤;③ 没有任何高级语法;④ 没有道具回响;⑤ 主题说教化。 |
3. 道具回响能力 | shoelace/fog/footsteps/team list必须回响 | 只写情节不回扣道具 |
Paragraph 1: Hardly holding back the pain, I whispered to Ben, "Go ahead. Win this for us."
Hardly holding back the pain, I whispered to Ben, "Go ahead. Win this for us." For a second Ben hesitated. His eyes flicked toward the finish line, still two hundred meters away, and I saw the old dream flare up in them — the dream he had carried since last year's collapse. Then, slowly, he shook his head. "No," he said. He did not sprint ahead. Instead, he turned around, walked back, and knelt down beside me. He retied my loose shoelace with steady fingers, then slipped my arm over his shoulder. "Come on," he said. "We go together. Or not at all." I wanted to protest. I wanted to tell him I had been sent here to pace him, to help him qualify. But the words died in my throat. His grip was already tightening around me. So I leaned on him, and together, limping and heavy, we moved forward into the thinning fog. |
Paragraph 2: When the results were announced later, Ben sought me out, holding the team list.
When the results were announced later, Ben sought me out, holding the team list. I was already sitting on the curb, ice pressed to my ankle, when he dropped down beside me. "Look," he said, turning the paper. I read the two names, side by side: mine and his. "How?" I breathed. "Coach," Ben said, almost smiling, "said the team doesn't need ten fast runners. It needs two who know how to slow down." I stared at him. "Ben," I said at last, "there's something I have to tell you. About the coach. About why I was running in front of you today." Ben held up a hand. "I know," he said softly. "I noticed the pace two kilometers in. But you know what? It didn't matter. Because when you fell, you told me to go on. And when I fell last year, nobody told me anything. You stayed. That's enough." The fog was gone. The afternoon sun fell across the list on our knees. I finally understood what "us" had meant all along. |
范文三亮点 ✦ “His eyes flicked toward the finish line” —— 一个flicked写出Ben的挣扎。 ✦ “We go together. Or not at all.” Because when you fell, you told me to go on. And when I fell last year, nobody told me anything.” ✦ 题眼句:“I finally understood what 'us' had meant all along.” |
Q2:Ben
原文第五段已经写了“Ben gave up his competitive speed and adjusted his stride to match my awkward movement”——他已经调整步幅配合你了。
A:不会。
“Runners passed us one by one”——一句话就够,不要展开。
A:建议散。 但不要硬写“the fog suddenly disappeared”,要写“the fog was beginning to thin”或“the fog was lifting”。
“Coach said...”
“I have to tell you something...”就够,不要写“I'm so sorry I lied to you for months”。
Q9:Ben
A:不会。 “I noticed the pace two kilometers in”非常合理。
A:不建议。
“A sharp pain shot up my leg”比“my ankle hurt very much”高级。
A:必须点。
A:不要。
A:不要。“A friend in need is a friend indeed”这种谚语会让文章显得幼稚。
I was in great pain. | Pain shot through my ankle like a bolt of lightning.
Ben was very moved. | Ben's jaw tightened. His eyes, fixed on the trail, turned to me for a second.
He helped me walk. | He slipped his arm under mine and adjusted his stride to match my limp.
The fog was disappearing. | The fog, which had swallowed the course since dawn, was slowly thinning. |
We crossed the finish line together. | Side by side, we crossed the tape — last, slow, but unbroken. |
Ben told me I was on the list. | Ben turned the list around, and there, two names, side by side, stared back at me.
I felt sorry about the pacer plan. | The secret I had carried for weeks sat heavy on my chest. |
Ben said it was okay. | "I knew," Ben said quietly. "It didn't matter." |
I understood the meaning of us. | I finally understood what "us" had meant all along. |
Friendship is more important than winning. | We didn't win the race. But we won something no stopwatch could measure. |
□ 第二段是否接住了“sought me out”和“holding the team list”?
□ 是否至少回响了3个原文道具(shoelace/fog/footsteps/stride/tape)?
Friendship is important!”)?

节奏示范(本篇范文一段) Ben did not move. (短句, 4词) For three heartbeats he stood there, his eyes fixed on mine. (长句, 13词) Then he shook his head. (短句, 6词) “No,” he said. (短句, 3词) He did not sprint. (短句, 4词) He walked back, knelt down, and retied my shoelace with steady fingers.
从“shoelace came loose”到Ben蹲下来系好;从“misty morning”到雾散;从“Ben followed my footsteps”到两人脚步合一;从“private pacer plan”到坦白;从“Win this for us”到“We finish together”——原文每一个道具和细节,在你的续写中都要有下文。
如果只是“They finished together and were happy”,立意分不及格。
Kent老师建议:第一段用2个短句开场(如“Ben did not move.” “He shook his head.”),中间用长句展开动作链,关键情感句用短句收束(如“We finish together.”)。
举个例子:反面写法是“He walked back to me slowly and then he knelt down and he retied my shoelace with his steady fingers and he smiled at me.”(全是and连接的流水句)。高分写法是“He walked back. He knelt. He retied my shoelace, his fingers steady for the first time all morning. Then he looked up at me and smiled.”(短句拆开,节奏出来)。
比如队长会说“I have to tell you something...”,而Ben会打断他说“Save it.
比如“Ben蹲下来系鞋带”比“Ben helped me”可拍摄一百倍;“雾散在终点带上”比“The sun came out”可拍摄一百倍;“两人名字并排写在名单上”比“We were both on the team”可拍摄一百倍。
如果不能,把抽象的词(helped, moved, happy)换成具体的动作(slipped his arm under mine, retied the shoelace, held up the list)。

1 | Ben二话不说冲出去 | "Ben nodded and sprinted toward the finish."
3 | 两人伤口发炎/送医院 | "An ambulance came and took me to hospital."
5 | 教练突然出现说教 | "The coach gave us a long speech." |
6 | 结局皆大欢喜套路 | "We both won the race and got trophies."
10 | 结尾喊口号 | "This story tells us friendship is great!"
第一段骨架(75词) Ben did not move. (4) For a moment he stood there, his eyes fixed on mine, as if weighing two years of dream against one limping friend. (20) Then he shook his head. (5) He stepped back, knelt, retied my loose shoelace, and slipped my arm over his shoulder. (15) "We finish together," he said, "or not at all." (10) I wanted to argue, but his grip was already tight. So I leaned on him, and together we moved toward the finish line, the fog beginning to lift around us. |
第二段骨架(75词) When the results were announced, Ben sought me out, holding the team list. (12) I was sitting on the grass, ice on my ankle, when he knelt beside me and turned the paper. (18) Two names, side by side — his and mine. (8) "Coach added you," he said, "said the team needs someone who knows when to slow down." (18) "Ben," I began, "about the pacer plan —" He held up a hand. "I know. I noticed two kilometers in. But it doesn't matter." (18) I finally understood what "us" had meant all along.
Kent
