Tanghulu

Tanghulu is a traditional Chinese snack. It has a long history and is loved by many people.

There are two stories about its origin. One says it started in the Southern Song Dynasty. Emperor Guangzong's favorite concubine was ill. A doctor said she should eat rock sugar — boiled hawthorns. She got better after following this. Then people started selling this as tanghulu. Another story is that in the Sui Dynasty, the court gave candied haws to reward heroes, and it became popular among the people.

Making tanghulu is easy. First, pick fresh hawthorns, remove their stems and cores. Then, boil rock sugar with water until the syrup is thick and can be pulled into threads. Next, skewer the hawthorns and dip them in the syrup. Finally, let them cool in the air.

Tanghulu usually tastes sweet and sour. Now, there are many kinds, like strawberry, grape, and orange tanghulu, not just the traditional hawthorn one.

Tanghulu is more than just food. It brings back childhood memories and shows people's love for life. As time goes by, new flavors like sandwich and chocolate tanghulu are created, making this snack even more popular.
