Beijing's 12345 Hotline Answers 200 Million Calls

When people in Beijing have a problem, they call 12345. It is a hotline for city services. A leaky pipe or a broken street light — the hotline will help. In seven years, it has handled over 200 million requests.

About 1,700 workers answer calls day and night. Each workerhandles more than 41 requests a day. Every step, from the call to the fix, has a clear owner and a time limit. The city now solves over 97% of the problems.

The hotline also joins different departments together. Last year, a noisy water pipe in a Beijing community was fixed in this way. The workers found the broken valve and repaired it at once. People from many countries come to study this hotline.
