一、考试之于你的意义
My Views on Examination
Nowadays the examination is used as a chief means of deciding whether a
student succeeds or fails in mastering a particular subject in most colleges
and universities. Although it is efficient, its side effects are also enormous.
On the one hand, examinations lower the standards of teaching. Since
teachers are often judged by examination results, they are reduced to
training their students in exam techniques. No subjects can be taught
successfully if treating exam as a gole . On the other hand, the most
undesirable effect is that examinations encourage bad study habits. A
examination is not the only criterion for driving the students to memorize
mechanically, but to think creatively instead.
In fact, few of us admit that examinations can contribute anything really
important to the students’ academic development. If that is the case, why
cannot we make a change and devise something more efficient and reliable
than examinations?
二、那些年陪伴我们的理想
Ideals
Everyone has his ideals. A businessman wishes to make greater profit; a
farmer expects plumper harvests; a student tries to learn more and better.
However, one should be sensible about whether his ideal is well founded or
not. If it is, one has to plan and work hard for its realization. Effort, skill and
persistence are all necessary. And very often, one has to get help from
others, including advice and support in one form or another.
My ideal is to become a doctor. It is said that the field of medicine is a well-
paid profession, but I take it as a lofty profession entrusted with savingpeople’s lives. To realize my ideal I have concentrated on laboratory work to
develop the analytical skills necessary to become a qualified doctor. I believe
that I will realize this ideal one day.
三、宿舍生活
On a Harmonious Dormitory Life
Dormitory life is an indispensable part of college life. But sometimes the
harmony in the dormitory is disturbed in one way or another.
As is known to all, a harmonious dormitory life is important to college
students and benefits all the members. On the one hand, we can have a good
rest and put our heart into study. On the other hand, we will have a good
mood and enjoy being together.
There are several ways to create and maintain a harmonious dormitory life.
Firstly, you have to evaluate your life-style and try to get rid of your dirty
habits, if there are any. Secondly, when an annoying situation arises, you’ll
just have to learn to tolerate each other and co-exist. Thirdly, you’ll have to
share with each other and make good friends.
In conclusion, we should try our best to build harmonious dormitory life for
the sake of good study and good life.
四、校园活动
Campus Activities
Campus activities have been organized in many universities and
colleges.These activities range from academie to recreational, such as
academic reports, speech contests, poet’s club, painting clubs, singing and
dancing groups, etc.
These activities provide students with two major advantages. First of all, they
play a positive role in improving students’ studies. Due to their heavy
schedules, students are often buried in textbooks and seldom expose
themselves to a colorful life. But the various activities provide opportunitiesfor them to relax themselves and enrich their minds. In addition, the activities
also serve students living in the "ivory tower" more chances to get in touch
with society. From these activities, the participants have to leave the
classroom and get to know the society.
All these offer an important means for students to broaden their horizons. By
participating in campus activities, they have fulfilled university life and in turn
help campus activities to grow and flourish.

The Influence of Television and Movies
There is no doubt that watching television and movies can influence the way
that people behave. Moreover, it seems that people are spending more and
more time watching some sort of visual entertainment, whether it is
television, a video tape or a DVD. Therefore, the effects of visual media
cannot be ignored.
One obvious effect of these media is that watching them induces people to
buy certain products. Television advertising is widespread and, nowadays,
even movie theaters permit advertisements. Another way TV and the movies
affect people is that they give people either a broader view of the world or a
distorted one, depending on what type of program they watch. Those who
watch news and educational program can learn many new things while those
who watch primarily entertainment shows may come to believe that most
people in the world possess great wealth and good looks. It may make
thembecome dissatisfied with their own lives. Finally, perhaps the most
susceptible viewers are children, who may be unable to tell fact from fiction
and may try to imitate acts that they see on TV or in the movies.
With the ever-increasing popularity of video entertainment, society must pay
attention to these effects. Television and movies, while entertaining and
informative, cannot take the place of real experience.
六、都市生活The Advantages of City Life
There are undeniable advantages to both life in a big city and in a small town.
The former offers more excitement and convenience while the latter offers a
cleaner, quieter and often friendlier place to live. However, despite the
advantages of small town life, I prefer to live in a big city for several reasons.
First, life in the city is more convenient. More goods are available and stores
are open later. Also, there is better public transportation so it is easier to get
around. I can find almost anything I want easily in the city. Second, there are
more ways to spend leisure time in the city. There are many places I can go
to meet friends and have fun. Finally, and most importantly, the city offers
more educational and career opportunities. The city often attracts the best
teachers and the best companies. There is also a wider choice of jobs so it is
easier to move up the career ladder.
For all of these reasons, I prefer to live in the city. Although I sometimes miss
the fresh air and quiet life of a small town, nothing can make up for the
opportunities that the city offers me. If one wants to be successful, I believe
the best place to live is the city.
