In July 2020, Rex and Britnee Smith realized their two pet dogs, Jack and Jill, were no longer in their fenced
backyard in Little Rock Arkansas. They went from door to door in their neighborhood, putting up posters, reaching
out to animal shelters and vets’ offices and posting on social media. It was a sad time for the Smiths, especially for
their 5-year-old daughter, who had a special bond with the dogs.

Texas. They still occasionally received calls from shelters or got pictures of dogs that could be theirs, but Jack and

microchips, they never expected that to happen to them.
Then in late July 2023, the Little Rock Animal Village called Rex to inform him Jill had been found. He

The Smiths immediately took her to the vet and dog spa, where Jill had her nails clipped, her teeth brushed
and her hair combed.

the media is similar to forming an opinion about someone solely based on a picture of their foot. While the media
might not deliberately deceive us, it often fails to provide a comprehensive view of reality.
Consequently, the question arises: Where, then, shall we get our information from if not from the media? Who
can we trust? How about experts—people who devote their working lives to understanding their chosen slice of the
world? However, even experts can fall prey to the allure of oversimplification, leading to the “single perspective
instinct” that hampers(阻碍)our ability to grasp the intricacies of the world.
Simple ideas can be appealing because they offer a sense of understanding and certainty. And it is easy to take
off down a slippery slope, from one attention-grabbing simple idea to a feeling that this idea beautifully explains, or
is the beautiful solution for, lots of other things. The world becomes simple that way.
Yet, when we embrace a singular cause or solution for all problems, we risk oversimplifying complex issues.
For instance, championing the concept of equality may lead us to view all problems through the lens of inequality
and see resource distribution as the sole panacea. However, such rigidity prevents us from seeing the
multidimensional nature of challenges and hinders true comprehension of reality. This “single perspective instinct”
ultimately clouds our judgment and restricts our capacity to tackle complex issues effectively.

problem from scratch and you can get on with using your brain for other tasks. But it’s not so useful if you like to
understand the world. Being always in favor of or always against any particular idea makes you blind to
information that doesn’t fit your perspective. This is usually a bad approach if you would like to understand reality.
Instead, constantly test your favorite ideas for weaknesses. Be humble about the extent of your expertise. Be
curious about new information that doesn’t fit, and information from other fields. And rather than talking only to
people who agree with you, or collecting examples that fit your ideas, consult people who contradict you, disagree
with you, and put forward different ideas as a great resource for understanding the world. I have been wrong about
the world so many times. Sometimes, coming up against reality is what helps me see my mistakes, but often it is
talking to, and trying to understand, someone with different ideas.
If this means you don’t have time to form so many opinions, so what? Wouldn’t you rather have few opinions
that are right than many that are wrong?

SnotBot is on a mission. The toaster-sized drone (无人机) flies over the open ocean, directly above an unusual
whale. On a boat nearby, Andy Rogan smiles with joy. Rogan has been studying whales in his entire career but had
never seen this species.
Back in 2011, Lian Pin Koh and Serge Wich, conservation experts, wondered if there might be an easier way
to get data of animals in the wild. Wildlife researchers often walk through forests. They may look closely at whales
from boats or stay in helicopters to view animals from above. Such trips are usually dangerous. Plus, their noise
may scare animals. And helicopters can’t fly very far over the ocean because there’s nowhere to land or refuel.
“We thought, ‘What if you fly over them with a flying camera?’’’ says Wich. So they put together a drone
from a remote-control model airplane and camera equipment. And it did the trick. On a test flight, the drone caught
an image of an orangutan (猩猩) at the top of a very tall tree. The pair realized this was just the beginning of a
whole new way of doing conservation work.
Now Wich and his colleagues are building AI that automatically locates and recognizes animals. They call
their project Conservation AI. When someone uploads an image or video, the model analyzes the data. Then the
model recognizes anything it can. In the future, an AI model could keep watch, instead of forest guards. It could
send warnings when seeing doubtful activities.
The team tested this idea in a study in East Africa. Volunteers in Tanzania pretended to be poachers (偷猎者).
The researchers made drones fly over the actors at different times of the day. Overall, people looking at the drone
images did a better job than the AI model at finding pretend poachers. The model picked out many things that
weren’t people at all. But the model found poachers that most people missed. With a little more work, Wich thinks

drives us to pursue a goal, including the desire to continue pursuing meaning, purpose, and a life worth living. It
fuels competition and boosts social connection. Its absence can lead to mental illnesses such as depression.
People often have multiple motives for engaging in any one behaviour. Motivation might be extrinsic. That
means a person is inspired by outside forces—other people or rewards. Anything promised for completing the task
or received as a result of completing the task are extrinsic motivators. Extrinsic motivation can increase motivation
in the short term, but over time it may gradually decrease.
Motivation can also be intrinsic. Intrinsic motivation comes purely from within, with no expected reward,
deadline, or outside pressure. For example, people who are intrinsically motivated to run do so because they love
the feeling of running itself. Compared to extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation tends to push people more
forcefully, and the achievements are more satisfying, since it is integrated into identity and serves as a continuous
source of motivation.
To understand motivation, Abraham Maslow introduced the concept of hierarchy of needs (需求层次) in 1943.
According to Maslow, humans are intrinsically motivated to meet physical needs, the most fundamental ones such
as needs for food. Then they gradually satisfy several levels of needs from safety, to higher-order needs for love,
belonging, and self-respect, and finally move to ward expressing their full potential—self-actualization, the desire
to become the most that one can be.
Although the generality of Maslow’s theory has been challenged, many believe it reveals fundamental truths
about human motivation. No matter where motivation begins, there are always ways to increase it — whether that
be your own motivation or someone else’s. Sometimes you might feel completely unmotivated — and that’s OK. In
that situation, allow yourself to feel the discomfort, hear the negative self-talk, and then take action anyway.
