The Scientist I Admire Most
Dear fellow students,
Today, I’m honored to introduce the scientist I admire most- Yuan Longping.
Known as the “father of hybrid rice”/a pioneer in agriculture, Yuan Longping worked
tirelessly and selflessly his entire life in the battle against food poverty, feeding millions
of people both at home and abroad.
What impresses me most about Yuan Longping is his dogged determination and
profound humility. Faced with technical obstacles and questions from the scientific
community, Yuan remained steadfast in his pursuit, successfully developing the first hybrid
rice in the world. His innovation brought him great celebrity and money. However, Yuan
Longping, despite receiving numerous awards, still considered himself a farmer, bending
down to work the land. He even made large donations to support agricultural research.
Needless to say, Yuan Longping’s life serves as an inspiration to us all, reminding us of
the power of dedication and the precious virtues of modesty.
Thank you for your listening. That’s all.

The moment Ava walked in, her parents greeted her with a smile. Ava was consumed by
guilt, her eyes brimming with tears and her heart racing with anxiety.Taking a deep breath, she
mustered up the courage and confessed in a trembling voice, "I lost my phone at the movies."Her
parents' smiles faded, replaced by looks of concern and disappointment. "Have you checked
everywhere? Did you ask the receptionist?" Mom inquired tentatively.Seeing Ava blush and duck
her head, her parents exchanged a meaningful look and let out a soft sigh."Come on, let's see if we
can get your phone back," said her father, patting her shoulder reassuringly.
Then her parents drove Ava back to the cinema. The car was enveloped in a deep silence, the
gravity of the situation weighing heavily on Ava. Upon arriving at the theater, they tirelessly
searched every corner, inquired with the staff, and checked the lost and found, but in vain. Ava
was on the verge of despair when a cleaner at the cinema rang to inform her that she had found the
phone. Before Ava could feel overjoyed, her mind raced with concerns that her parents might lose
faith in her, withdrawing her phone privileges. So when her father placed the phone into her palm
again, she felt not merely forgiveness and trust, but also a profound sense of responsibility.余姚中学2024学年第一学期期中检测高二英语试卷部分答案解析

Text 10
M: The Ministry of Education released a notice that restricts primary and middle school students
from carrying mobile phones to school. ⑱The policy aims to improve students’ focus on
study and fight addiction to the Internet and games. According to a 2020 report by the
China Internet Network Information Center, China had 175 million Internet users under the
age of 18. This is worrying, as long-time use of smart phones harms children’s eyesight,
cervical vertebrae and even the brain, according to the World Health Organization.
So many schools have taken measures to limit students’ phone use on campus now. Zhou
Dandan, an English teacher in Beijing said, “Before the new regulation, many students played
games during class. Most students lack self-discipline. Spending too much time on the phone
will distract them and prevent them from learning.” And Li Jisen, an 18-year-old student,
agreed with the new policy.
⑲However, Liu Yanping, the principal, said, “It’s unwise to take a ‘one size fits all’
approach. You can’t simply cut students off from the Internet in the digital era.” And
Kathy Chen, a parent from Shanghai, allowed her daughter to take her phone to school. Chen
said it’s more important to cultivate kids’ ability to self-manage and form good habits of
phone usage.
⑳As for me, I think all the arguments mentioned above are reasonable. I’m not sure
what to say about this policy. If you want to know more about different opinions, please
