Text 1
W: John, can you go to the movies with me tonight?
M: Sorry, I missed my physics class this morning. I need to watch the video of the lecture to
make it up.
Text 2
W: I’m going to drive my car to work instead of taking the company’s bus. How about you?
M: Actually, I prefer riding a bicycle because I live close to the company and it’s a good way to
stay active.
W: Sounds good.
Text 3
M: Sorry, honey. Something unexpected has come up at work and I have to deal with it.
I might not make it home until really late.
W: It’s fine. It's not the first time, anyway. I’ll ask some friends to join me for dinner at
the restaurant instead.
Text 4
W: Kevin, I need some help with cooking this new recipe tonight. Can you give me a hand?
M: I’d love to, but I’m not very experienced in the kitchen. Maybe you can ask Sarah, she’s a fantastic
cook.
Text 5
W: Henry, have you finished reading Gone with the Wind?
M: Yes. I really enjoy it. Scarlett O’Hara, the main character, has captured my heart.
W: Same here. You can also watch the movie adaptation. It’s wonderful, too.
Text 6
M: This is a very nice restaurant.
W: Really? Any recommendations on what to order?
M: I’d like to advise you to have some beef. It’s been a longstanding specialty here. Plus, it’s
super affordable too!
W: Does that mean beef is a traditional dish here?
M: Yes, exactly. They cook it in a special way that gives it a unique and delicious flavor.
I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.
W: Alright then, I’ll give it a try.
Text 7
W: Oh, I think I need to take a break. I'm too tired.

W: You seem to have endless energy. Why?
M: Because I exercise regularly. I play basketball three times a week and I swim every Saturday
and Sunday morning.
W: We all need to stay in shape, but it feels like I never have time to exercise, not even once a
week.
M: If you are determined, you can always find time. Look! We are approaching the mountain top.
You’ll be amazed by the sunset!
W: OK, wait for a moment. I’m coming!
Text 8
M: Good afternoon. How can I help you?
W: Hello... Erm... yes. I’ve just missed my train to Chicago!
M: Ah yes. That was the 4:30 one.
W: What time’s the next one?
M: Let me see. The next train to Chicago departs at twenty to six from Platform 3 and arrives at
twenty past seven.
W: Can I use the same ticket?
M: Just a moment, please. Can I see your ticket? Ah, sorry, no... You can’t use this ticket for the 5:40

W: Oh... do I have to buy another ticket?
M: Yes, well, your ticket costs $16.50, and I can change your old ticket for a new one with

W: Ah, OK, erm... What platform is it from?
M: Platform 3. Just over there, on the other side. By the way, there’s a snack bar if you want a

W: Hey, Bob. What happened to your left leg?
M: I hurt my ankle. It’s really painful.
W: I'm sorry to hear that. How did that happen?
M: Oh, I fell down the stairs outside my apartment. My wife was at work, so I tried calling my
neighbour but couldn’t get through. Fortunately, a passerby saw me and offered to drive me to the
hospital.
W: Oh, poor you.
M: The doctor said I should stay in bed, but I have to make a living by serving the dishes in a

W: Don't worry. You'll be better soon. You know, I broke my leg three years ago.
M: Really? How did you break it?
W: I had a bad motorbike accident on the way to the supermarket.
M: Sounded terrible.
W: Yeah, it was. I didn’t go out for eight weeks. I was in hospital for three weeks and then I had to
stay at home for five weeks.
M: So your leg is OK now, right?
W: Yes, but it took a long time to get better. You really should take care of your ankle.

W: Hello, everyone. It’s Joanna here. I’m glad to share how I find a diet that suits me
学科网(北京)股份有限公司well. When I first moved to America, I started eating like most Americans do. But to my surprise,
I started gaining weight quickly. I soon realized that the typical American diet was filled with
hidden calories. With such a high calorie intake, the only way to lose weight seemed to be through
a lot of exercise but time was not on my side. So after consulting professionals, I tried the
Mediterranean diet, which focuses on healthy fats and whole foods. Slowly, I added
Mediterranean recipes to my usual diet. After a month, my entire diet was Mediterranean-
based. I felt energized, I felt full. But most importantly, I felt free. I wasn’t focusing on
weight loss because I knew I was losing weight naturally. My experience inspired me to
create: The Mediterranean Refresh, a book for anyone struggling with food. I’m here to
tell you that if I can do it, you can too. My book isn’t for chefs; it’s for everyone.
