Mats Malm, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, which organizes the prize, said at a news conference in Stockholm that Han was receiving the honor “for her intense poetic writing that bravely discusses 学科网(北京)股份有限公司historical events and exposes the fragility of human life.” Han, 53, was born in 1970 in Gwangju, South Korea. Her father was also a novelist, but much less successful. The family struggled financially and moved frequently. In a 2016 interview with The Times, Han said her childhood experience “was too much for a little child, but I was all right because I was surrounded by books.” When Han was 9, her family moved to Seoul just months before the Gwangju uprising (起义), when government army fired on crowds of protesters, killing hundreds. The event shaped her views on humanity’s capacity for violence, Han said in the 2016 interview. She also recalled seeing images of people who lined up to donate their blood to those who were injured in the uprising. “It was like two unsolvable riddles imprinted on my mind: How can humans be so violent, and how can humans be so noble?” she said. “When I write novels, I find myself always returning to the theme of what it means to be human.” Han studied literature at Yonsei University in Korea, and her first published works were poems. Her first novel, “Black Deer,” which came out in 1998, was a mystery about a missing woman. 根据文章第三段中“In a 2016 interview with The Times, Han said her childhood experience “was too much for a little child, but I was all right because I was surrounded by books.” 根据文章倒数第三段“The event shaped her views on humanity’s capacity for violence, Han said in the 2016 interview. She also recalled seeing images of people who lined up to donate their blood to those who were injured in the uprising. 根据文章最后一段中“In the 2016 interview, Han said it was around that time that she developed the idea for a short story about a woman who becomes a plant, which she eventually developed into “The Vegetarian.” B。 C Researchers have developed a rapid Raman spectroscopy-based method(拉曼光谱算法) for detecting and quantifying early bacterial infection in crops. Due to the increasing demand for global food supply and security, there is a growing need to improve agricultural production systems and increase crop productivity. Globally, bacterial pathogen infection(细菌病原体 感染) in crop plants is one of the major contributors to agricultural production losses. Climate change also adds to the problem by quickening the spread of plant diseases. Hence, developing methods for rapid and early detection of pathogen-infected crops is important to improve plant disease management and reduce crop loss. The breakthrough by researchers offers a faster and more accurate method to detect bacterial infection in crop plants at an earlier stage, as compared to existing techniques. Traditionally, plant disease diagnosis involves a simple visual inspection of plants for disease symptoms and severity. “Visual inspection methods are often 学科网(北京)股份有限公司ineffective, as disease symptoms usually show only at relatively later stages of infection, when the pathogen load is already high, and treatments are limited. Hence, new methods are required for rapid and early detection of bacterial infection. The idea would be like having medical tests to identify human diseases at an early stage, instead of waiting for visual symptoms to show, so that early intervention or treatment can be applied,” says MIT Professor Rajeev Ram, who is a co-corresponding author on the paper. “We have developed a quantitative Raman spectroscopy-based algorithm that can help farmers to identify bacterial infection rapidly. The developed diagnostic algorithm makes use of Raman spectral biomarkers and can be easily carried out in cloud-based computing and prediction platforms. It is more effective than existing techniques as it enables accurate identification and early detection of bacterial infection, both of which are critical to saving crop plants that would otherwise be destroyed,” explains Gajendra Pratap Singh, scientific director and co-lead author. The development of this rapid and noninvasive method could improve plant disease management and have a transformative impact on agricultural farms by efficiently reducing agricultural production loss and increasing productivity. 28. What’s the significance of developing the Raman spectroscopy-based method? A. It quickens the spread of plant diseases. B. It contributes to agricultural production loss. C. It can detect early bacterial infection in crops. D. It can improve plant disease management and reduce crop loss. 29. How does the author explain the newly developed method in paragraph3? A. By listing figures. B. By giving examples. C. By making a comparison. D. By making an assumption. 30. What does the advantage of the new method indicate? A. Nip in the bud. B. No pains, no gains. C. More haste, less speed. D. All that glitters is not gold. 31. Which is the best title of the text? A. The Way to Increase Crop Productivity.B. The Importance of Detecting Bacterial Infection. C. Reasons for Developing Raman Spectroscopy-based Method. D. New Method for Early Detection of Bacterial Infection in Crops. D 29. C 30. A 31. 故选A。 31 . D。 D Here’s a quick quiz. Person A does a favor for you. Person B asks you to do a favor for him. Who do you tend to like more? Surprisingly, the answer is Person B.This quirk (怪癖) of human nature is known as the Ben Franklin Effect. Benjamin Franklin came across the phenomenon in 1736 when serving as a clerk to the Pennsylvania Assembly. A powerful member didn’t care for Franklin and threatened to make life miserable for him. What to do? Instead of winning him over with sweet talk, Franklin asked if he could borrow a rare and valuable book the man owned. This request altered the man’s attitude and paved the way for their friendship. Franklin’s takeaway: “He that has once done you a kindness will be ready to do you another, than he whom you yourself have obliged.” Several studies have confirmed this. But how can we explain the Ben Franklin Effect? Some psychologists refer to cognitive dissonance (失调). It’s difficult to hold two contradictory thoughts at the same time. It makes us uncomfortable. We resolve this tension by changing our mind. “I don’t like Joe, but I am doing him a favor,” we might think. “So maybe I do like him.” While cognitive dissonance explains a lot, it alone doesn’t explain the Ben Franklin Effect. One 2015 study found that it was, rather, the affiliative (亲和的) motive that the requests convey. That is, we humans want to maintain good relations with other humans, and one way to achieve this is by doing favors for others. This explains 学科网(北京)股份有限公司a lot about altruistic behavior. We like being useful and, by extension, we like those who give us the opportunity to do so. It’s in our genes. Yet there is much we still don’t know about the Ben Franklin Effect. Does it apply equally across cultures? Is there a point beyond which asking a favor makes you less, not more likable? Asking to borrow a book is one thing; asking to borrow a car is another. 32.Why does the author mention Benjamin Franklin’s experience? A.To illustrate a dilemma in making choices. B.To suggest a way of striking up friendships. C.To stress the importance of strategic requests. D.To introduce the origin of the Ben Franklin Effect. 33.What is a reason for people’s tendency to like those asking for favors? A.Reducing the tension caused by social contact. B.Increasing the chance of getting help in return. C.Avoiding the discomfort from conflicting thoughts. D.Establishing a cooperative community of shared trust. 34.What does the underlined word “altruistic” probably mean in paragraph 4? A.Selfless. B.Impolite. C.Aggressive. D.Responsible. 35.What does the author think of the Ben Franklin Effect? A.It makes little sense. B.It applies to most cultures. C.It has situational limitations. D.It has great practical significance. 根据第一段的“Surprisingly, the answer is Person B. This quirk (怪癖) of human nature is known as the Ben Franklin Effect.(令人惊讶的是,答案是B型这种人性的怪癖被称为本·富兰克林效应。)”和 第二段的“Benjamin Franklin came across the phenomenon in 1736 when serving as a clerk to the Pennsylvania Assembly. A powerful member didn’t care for Franklin and threatened to make life miserable for him. What to do? Instead of winning him over with sweet talk, Franklin asked if he could borrow a rare and valuable book the man owned. This request altered the man’s attitude and paved the way for their friendship. Franklin’s takeaway: “He that has once done you a kindness will be ready to do you another, than he whom you yourself have obliged.”(本杰明· 富兰克林(Benjamin Franklin)在1736年担任宾夕法尼亚州议会书记员时遇到了这种现象。 根据第三段的“Some psychologists refer to cognitive dissonance (失调). It’s difficult to hold two contradictory thoughts at the same time. It makes us uncomfortable.(一些心理学家称之为认知失调。 根据划线词前文“One 2015 study found that it was, rather, the affiliative (亲和的) motive that the requests convey. That is, we humans want to maintain good relations with other humans, and one way to achieve this is by doing favors for others.(2015年的一项研究发现,更确切地说,这是请求所传达的亲和动机。 以及下文 “We like being useful and, by extension, we like those who give us the opportunity to do so. 故选A。 35. 根据文章最后一段“Yet there is much we still don’t know about the Ben Franklin Effect. Does it apply equally across cultures? Is there a point beyond which asking a favor makes you less, not more likable? Asking to borrow a book is one thing; asking to borrow a car is another.(然而,我们对本·富兰克林效应 还有很多不了解的地方。 Food Safety Is Crucial: How Should We Respond? Her mission, though seemingly simple, holds immense significance — socks, an often-overlooked necessity, are crucial for the well-being of those without a permanent roof over their heads. “You don’t fully appreciate their importance until you’re forced to go without them for an extended period,” Sidney remarks thoughtfully. This realization dawned upon her after learning about the pressing need for socks among the homeless community, highlighted by the nonprofit organization Hope the Mission. Inspired by this revelation, Sidney decided to team up with Hope the Mission to launch a campaign to collect socks for the homeless. Her ambitious target? A quarter of a million pairs — an astonishing number that would ensure every client at Hope the Mission receives clean socks for an entire year. “We’re nearly at 200,000 pairs, but we need a final push to reach our goal,” shares Rowan Vansleve, the CFO of Hope the Mission and Sidney’s proud father. Sidney credits her father as her biggest inspiration. “Without him, I wouldn’t have dreamed of doing this,” she admits gratefully. Rowan, equally as touched, responds, “I’m so proud to be her dad; she’s an extraordinary person.” To facilitate donations, Sidney has set up two convenient methods: contributors can either add to her Amazon wishlist or visit any of the 29 Starbucks locations listed on the Hope of the Valley website. “People can donate in various packs or even just a single pair,” Sidney explains. With the deadline for sock donations looming (迫近的) on December 27th, Sidney’s ambitions don’t stopthere. She aims to make her mark in a different way — by breaking a Guinness World Record. Before distributing the socks, Sidney wrote a sentence “you are loved” on a note and attached it to each pair. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ After the report, donations poured in from all corners of the country. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 【参考范文】 Before distributing the socks, Sidney wrote a note saying “you are loved” and attached it to each pair. When receiving the socks that were neatly packed, recipients were deeply moved, expressing gratitude and even tears of joy. Some shared their personal stories, thanking her for restoring their sense of dignity. Reporters highlighted her efforts, prompting local businesses and schools to join the cause, extending her impact even further.
