Text 1
W: OK, Tom, it looks like your bus is here now.
M: Thanks so much for coming to see me off, Julie. I should be back on Friday, all being well.
W: Have a safe trip. We’ll catch up then and you can tell me how the interview went.
Text 2
W: Excuse me, do you have a table for one?
M: I’m sorry madam. It’s only 5:30. We don’t open for another half an hour.
W: Oh, I didn’t realize. OK, well I’ll go for a walk around the shops and come back in an hour.
Text 3
W: Excuse me, can you turn down the music a bit please? I cannot hear myself talking to my friend.
M: I am sorry, but the sound system is controlled by the central unit. Would you like to move outside to a quieter
location?
W: OK, sure.
Text 4
M: My teachers used to tell me, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Remember this saying while you’re making the effort to
create a better future. Your mother and I did the same on our slow path toward becoming lawyers.
W: You’re right, Dad. Thanks.
Text 5
M: Zoe, hurry up, your favorite show is about to start. You’re going to miss the start.
W: OK, don’t worry. I’m just putting the dinner plates away. Won’t be a minute.
M: The opening titles are coming on now. Hurry up. Bring something to eat while we’re watching.
Text 6
M: It’s too hot and dry these days. Have you seen the weather forecast for tomorrow?
W: Yes, they’re predicting heavy rain all day. It’s gonna be cool, for sure.
M: Oh, I was planning to go walking in the Lake District.
W: Oh no, that’s a shame. Walking in the rain isn’t fun.
M: Yes, I’m not sure what to do now. Maybe I should postpone the trip.
W: That might be a good idea. What will you do instead?
M: Perhaps I’ll go to the cinema. There’s a new film I wanted to see.
W: That sounds like a better plan. I’m off to the dentist right now.
M: Oh, good luck with that.
Text 7
W: Honey, it’s me. I just wanted to let you know I’ve arrived safely in Edinburgh.
M: That’s great to hear. How was the journey, dear?
W: It was good. There was a slight delay between London and Birmingham but the train was comfortable.
M: I’m glad to hear that. Did you get the snacks I packed for you?
W: Yes, thank you so much. They were perfect for the trip.
M: Well, how’s the weather up there?
W: It’s a bit cold, but not too bad. How’s everything back home?
M: It’s fine. Just the usual. The kids miss you and so does the cat.
W: I miss them too. I’ll call again later to let you know how things are going at the conference.
M: Yes, do that. Enjoy your time there and take care.
W: Will do. Thanks again for everything, honey.

W: Hi, Ben. Do you remember the things you used to play with when you were a kid?
M: Hi, Rachel. Yes, of course. Being an only child, I often had to entertain myself. I had a toy castle with little soldiers. I
used to love them.
W: I used to play with my sisters. We loved playing tag and hide and seek.
M: Those were the best. Do you think any kids today still play those games?
W: Not as much. I see them more on their phones and tablets now. Some of the modern games they play are pretty
amazing.
M: I’ve tried a few and they’re really difficult, but young people seem to have no problems with them.
W: Do you think they’re better or worse than the things we entertained ourselves with?
M: I think both have their good points. Technology is great, but kids today are missing out on outdoor fun.
W: Yes, running around and playing outside was so much fun. In the summer, I used to go out in the morning and my
parents wouldn’t see me until the evening.
Text 9
W: Hi there. Your dog is beautiful. What kind is he?
M: Hi. Thanks. He’s a Border Collie.
W: Oh, I’ve heard they’re really clever. Why did you choose that type?
M: Well, yes, they’re very intelligent. I got Max because I wanted an active dog that could keep up with my outdoor
lifestyle. I love walking and running, and these dogs are perfect for that.
W: What do you like most about him?
M: His energy and intelligence are amazing. Max learns new tricks so quickly. He’s also very loyal and great with my
kids.
W: Are there any challenges?
M: You have to keep these dogs interested. If they get bored, they can become destructive. Max chewed up a few shoes
when he was a puppy because he wasn’t getting enough exercise.
W: How do you keep him entertained now?
M: I make sure he gets plenty of exercise every day. We go for long walks. It keeps him happy and out of trouble.
W: That sounds like a lot of work. Is there anything you want to say to someone thinking of getting a dog like that?
M: Make sure you have enough time to dedicate yourself to them. They’re not the type of dog you can leave alone for
long periods. They need activities to stay happy. Also, start training early. It makes a huge difference.
W: Max is lucky to have such a caring owner.
