The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences was awarded to Claudia Goldin, a
Harvard professor, for advancing the world's understanding of women's progress in the work
学科网(北京)股份有限公司force. She is the third woman to have won the Economics Nobel, which was first awarded
in 1969, and the first one to be honored with it solo rather than sharing in the prize.
Dr. Goldin, 77, was the first woman to be offered tenure(终身职位) in Harvard's
economics department in 1989. Dr. Goldin's research on female employment and the gender
wage gap over the past 200 years showed that employment among married women de-
creased in the 1800s, as the economy moved away from agriculture and toward industry.
Women's participation then increased in the 1900s, as the service industry began to expand as
a part of the economy. Dr. Goldin has described the 1970s in particular as a "revolution-
ary" period when women in the US began to marry later, pursue higher education, and make
major progress in the labor market.
Dr. Goldin has also illustrated how the process of closing the gender wage gap has
been uneven over the course of history. In the past, gender wage gaps could be explained
by education and occupation. But Dr. Goldin has shown that most of the earnings differ-
ence is now in the same jobs. Notably, it kicks in after the birth of a woman's first child.
Goldin and her colleagues once found the gap in pay started to widen a year or two after a
woman had her first baby.
She hoped people would learn from her work how important long-term changes are for
understanding the labor market. "We're never going to have gender equality until we also
have couple equality, "she said. While there has been "monumental progressive change, at
the same time there are important differences" which often tie back to women doing more
work in the home.
24. What can be learned about Dr. Goldin in the passage?
A. She set out to research female employment in 1989.
B. She is the first woman to receive the prize alone.
C. She redefined women's role in employment in the 1970s.
D. She is devoted to inspiring women to step outside to work.
25. Why did female employment increase in the 1900s?
A. Because the economy depended more on industry.
B. Because men wanted to obtain higher education then.
C. Because women were not eager for marriage at the time.
学科网(北京)股份有限公司D. Because the service industry offered more opportunities.
26. What does the underlined word "uneven" mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Regular. B. Promising. C. Tough. D. Unchanging.
27. What did Dr. Goldin hope to achieve from her work?
A. Women should be judged by their education.
B. Couple equality should be a goal to work for.
C. Gender wage gaps should be addressed soon.
D. Men would take on all the housework at home.

For decades, scientists have tried to figure out ways to reverse(扭转) climate change
by pulling carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and storing it underground. Companies,
researchers and the US government have spent billions of dollars on the research and de-
velopment of different approaches, yet they remain too expensive to reduce carbon emis-
sions.
Graphyte, a new company assisted by Bill Gates's investment group Breakthrough En-
ergy Ventures, announced earlier that it has created a method for turning bits of wood
chips and rice hulls into low-cost, dried chunks of plant matter. Those carbon-storing
chunks of plant, which look a bit like shoebox-sized Lego blocks, can then be buried deep
underground for hundreds of years. The approach, the company claims, could store CO2 at
an acceptable price.
Graphyte's approach uses the power of plants and trees to photosynthesize(进行光合作
用) and pull carbon dioxide from the air. While trees and plants are excellent at carbon
capture, they don't store that carbon for very long when a plant burns or rots. Graphyte plans
to avoid that by taking plant waste from timber harvesters and drying it thoroughly, remov-
ing all the microbes that could cause it to decay and release greenhouse gases. Then, in a
process that they call "carbon casting, "it will press the waste together and wrap it into Lego-
like bricks, for easier storage about 10 feet underground. With the right monitoring systems,
it is said that the blocks can stay there for a thousand years.
"The simplicity of the Graphyte approach is so exciting, said Daniel Sanchez, who
runs the Carbon Removal Lab at the University of California at Berkeley, and serves as a
学科网(北京)股份有限公司science adviser for Graphyte. "You don't need very expensive equipment or processes. And
it locks up a lot of the carbon in the wood -nearly all of it. "Other approaches are much
more complicated and, although proved, are much more costly than the new company's esti-
mated costs. Graphyte is planning its first project now.
28. What prevents the application of the previous research?
A. The disapproval from government. B. The diverse opinions of companies.
C. The high expenses. D. The lack of researchers.
29. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 2?
A. How Bill Gates contributes to helping Graphyte.
B. The way of handling CO2 found by Graphyte.
C. The methods of reducing the cost of storing CO2.
D. How Graphyte applies Lego to their new invention.
30. What is special about Graphyte's blocks?
A. They can be stored underground longer.
B. They are to help trees capture carbon.
C. They have their own monitoring system.
D. They are made of rotted plant matter.
31. What will be mentioned in the next paragraph?
A. The detailed price of the blocks. B. The disadvantages of the blocks.
C. The future project of Graphyte. D. The aid from more researchers.

Using X-rays to peer into the chemical structure of a tiny speck (微粒) of the cele-
brated work of art "Mona Lisa", scientists have gained new insight into the techniques that
Leonardo da Vinci used to paint his groundbreaking portrait of the woman with the
exquisitely mysterious smile.
The research, published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, suggests that
the famously curious, learned and inventive Italian Renaissance master may have been in a
particularly experimental mood when he set to work on the "Mona Lisa" early in the 16th
century.
学科网(北京)股份有限公司The oil-paint method Leonardo used as his base layer appears to have been different
for the "Mona Lisa, " with its own distinctive chemical signature, the team of scientists
and art historians in France and Britain discovered. "He was someone who loved to experi-
ment, and each of his paintings is completely different technically, said Victor Gonzalez, the
study's lead author and a chemist at France's top research body, the CNRS. Gonzalez has
studied the chemical compositions of dozens of works by Leonardo, Rembrandt and other
artists.
Specifically, the researchers found a rare compound, plumbonacrite (水白铅矿) in
Leonardo's first layer of paint. The discovery confirmed for the first time what art histori-
ans had previously only assumed: that Leonardo most likely used lead oxide powder to
thicken and help dry his paint as he began working on the portrait. Plumbonacrite is a
byproduct of lead oxide, allowing the researchers to say with more certainty that Leonardo
likely used the powder in his paint recipe. "Plumbonacrite is really a fingerprint of his recipe,
"Gonzalez said, "It's the first time we can actually chemically confirm it. "
After Leonardo, Dutch master Rembrandt may have used a similar recipe when he was
painting in the 17th century. "It also tells us that those recipes were passed on for cen-
turies, " Gonzalez said, "It was a very good recipe. "But the "Mona Lisa" and other works by
Leonardo still have other secrets to tell. "There are plenty, plenty more things to discover, for
sure. We are barely scratching the surface, Gonzalez said, "What we are saying is just a little
brick more in the knowledge. "
32. What kind of person is Leonardo da Vinci according to the new finding?
A. Adventurous and creative. B. Ambitious and generous.
C. Intelligent and mysterious. D. Sensitive and inspiring.
33. What had art historians supposed earlier?
A. Rembrandt was fond of imitating Leonardo's style.
B. It is most likely that Leonardo used to be a chemist.
C. The portrait may have been dried in a special way when finished.
D. Leonardo may have employed lead oxide powder in his work.
34. What can we infer according to Gonzalez?
A. It is necessary to scratch the surface of the "Mona Lisa".
学科网(北京)股份有限公司B. There is little point in finding the chemicals in the portrait.
C. The scientists have revealed Leonardo's technique thoroughly.
D. There is a long way to go for a deep understanding of Leonardo's works.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Powerful Chemicals for Painting
B. Leonardo's Experiments on Portraits
C. The New Secret of the "Mona Lisa"
D. Far-reaching Influence of the "Mona Lisa"

All I knew was that, when I heard a young girl's voice in distress, I had to do some-
thing. It was on a flight to Iceland with a dear friend with cancer. He asked me to accom-
pany him as he traveled to get some medical scans in Europe. We were all settled in for a
long flight, off on an adventure to a hospital in Holland where I would support him.
It wasn't long before I heard a man belittling (贬低) a sobbing girl directly behind
me. I couldn't ignore what was happening. This was obviously a girl in a very dangerous
situation. My friend didn't hear any of it, so he had no idea what I was thinking. I was
学科网(北京)股份有限公司witnessing, with my ears only, a guy verbally abusing a girl who was crying uncontrol-
lably: “… fat… retarded(迟钝的) . What did I see in you?!” Her boyfriend continued
to upset her with no regard for her tears. He didn't care. He was controlling her, and this
was his intention.
I noticed the napkin used for my water cup and recognized it was something I could
write on. If I could get a note to her without him seeing, maybe this would help her un-
derstand she needed to run away from him FAST.
This was happening behind me, so I thought, I could wait until he went to the bath-
room and passed her the note. I glanced behind me periodically, and he finally left. I
didn't know what she looked like. I didn't know if our eyes ever met. All I knew then was
she now had a note from someone who cared, with my e-mail address, asking if she
wanted to contact a total stranger who had observed her desperate situation. It was so dan-
gerous that I couldn't even risk sharing my phone number and taking a chance that it
would land in her boyfriend's hands.
Sometimes, there are situations we cannot ignore. My dad taught me to never leave a
place wishing I had done or said something. That was going through my mind. I actually
did something and I wished it could make a difference.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I did get a response from this young girl, revealing there was not only verbal abuse
but physical abuse as well.
It turned out that my note had started getting the girl on the path to saving herself.
