In 2015, Brian Peterson and his wife moved to Santa Ana, California, where they came
across a homeless man named Matt Faris. Inspired by Love Does, a book about the power
of love in action, Peterson decided to introduce himself. Despite Faris’ challenging
circumstances, Peterson saw the beauty within him and asked to paint his portrait. This

portraits of unhoused community members.
Starting from a black-and-white photo taken with his phone, Peterson chooses colors
inspired by the subject’s personality and life story, creating a poignant (令人感伤的) portrait.
He sells the finished canvases (油画), signed by both the subject and artist, and shares the
proceeds. Half goes into a “love account” for the model, which Peterson assists them in
using to rebuild their lives.
Many of Peterson’s new friends use the donations to secure immediate necessities –
medical care, hotel rooms and food. However, Peterson has learned the importance of not
assuming what someone needs and instead asks them directly. The impact has been profound.
Faris, for example, used the money to record an album, fulfilling his musical dreams. Another
subject, Kimberly Sondoval, used it to support her daughter’s rent, leading to a tear-filled
and heartfelt moment as they cried in Peterson’s arms.
Over the years, Peterson expanded his work with the creation of Faces of Mankind, a
collective of artists painting portraits of homeless individuals nationwide. Peterson himself
has painted 41 of these portraits. The nonprofit’s impact extends beyond financial support,
however, as buyers of the paintings often connect with the subject’s story, finding similarities
and often friendship with someone they might have otherwise overlooked or stereotyped

Peterson expressed his surprise at this transformation when he said, “People often tell
me, ‘I see homeless people differently now.’ I didn’t know that would happen.”

Australia is proud of a unique history that has been shaped by the diversity of her
inhabitants. The three main elements that have been central to the creation of Australia’s
population composition are the diversity of her native population, colonization by the British
in the past and the extensive immigration from diverse cultures.
Australia is home to the world’s cultures and inhabitants who can identify with more
than 270 ancestries (祖先). From the year 1945, the number of people who have immigrated
to Australia from different parts of the globe is approximately seven million. The country
considers the rich cultural diversity as its main strength which embodies its national
identity.
In 1975, there was the racial discrimination (歧视) act, which meant that discrimination
in the country was against the law. Later in 1995, the act was extended to ensure that any
acts of racial hatred (仇恨) were against the law. To date, the act has been used in ensuring
that Australia sends a strong message on the collective commitment to promoting racial
equality and the significance of fairness for all.
On a range of measures, Australia is a multicultural success story. On educational
attainment, studies show that children of immigrants in Australia get better average results
than children of native-born Australians. This is significant because according to research
conducted by the OECD, the successful integration of immigrant students is an important
indicator of a country’s success in its education system and equity and broader socially
combinative policies.
The success in educational performance is mirrored in the broader economy of Australia as
it attracts a significant proportion of skilled migrants annually who have a high labour market
participation rate. In the year between 2016-2017, skilled migrants accounted for 67.3
percent of the total immigration program outcome that year. The net effect of a
multiculturalism policy for Australia has been a brain gain for Australia and this is expected
to continue growing.
