After spending his career as a chef and working as the Vice President of Food and Beverage at FireKeepers
Hotel in Michigan, Michael McFarlen saw how much food would get thrown away from the hotel’s restaurant
everyday.
Aftersomethinking,McFarlencameupwithaplantorunarestaurantinthecommunitythatwouldalsohelp
support a food pantry(食品橱) on the property. After presenting the idea to FireKeepers leadership, they were
immediately on board with the plan. In April of 2016, the FireKeepers Hotel and its owners, the Nottawaseppi
HuronBandofthePotawatomi,boughtFireStationNo.4,ahistoricfirehouse.Theyrenovated(翻新)thebuilding
andturnedthefirestationintoarestaurant.
OnApril19,2017,therestaurant,whichtheynamedTheFireHub,openedtothepublicforthefirsttime.At
the same time, a food pantry, which they named the Kendall Street Food Pantry (KSFP) opened its door in the
back of the building. “It really is amazing,” Kathy George, the Chief Executive Officer of FireKeepers, told
Second Wave Media about the special restaurant designed to support the food pantry. The first year of operation
exceeded their expectations. Not only did the restaurant attract customers because of its popularity and
3sustainability,butthefoodpantryhelpedmorepeopleinthefirstyearthantheyeverimagined.
Whenyouthinkofpeopleusingfoodpantryservices,youthinkofhomelessorunemployedpeople.Inreality,
however, many of the people who have needed the food pantry’s help are people that are employed but still

Hub are also given to non-profit organisations like the Safe Place and the Food Bank of South Central Michigan
Inc. “We’re building a responsible business that takes profits and gives to non-profit organisations,” McFarlen

Despite more than a month of efforts to rescue Tenora, a young green sea turtle(海龟), pollution-related
issuesmadeitdifficulttosaveher.Tenorawasfinallyputtodeathtoreducehersuffering.
Tenora was brought in by Rainbow Reef Dive Center staff and customers on October 3, 2020. The rescue
team was led by PADI (ProfessionalAssociation of Diving Instructors) Instructor Josh Phillips who had made it
his “personalmission” to helpTenora after seeing her with a softball-sized tumor (肿瘤) outon the reefs(暗礁).
He connected with theTurtle Hospital, a nonprofit in the Florida Keys for permission andguidance abouthow to
rescueher.
After over a month of searching and failed attempts, Phillips was finally able to rescue her on a rainy
Saturday. Shelby Ferguson of the Turtle Hospital met the boat at the dock to bring Tenora in for evaluation and
care. Ferguson explained that green sea turtles are the species most easily affected by the virus that causes
fibropapilloma (FP) tumors like the one Tenora had. Generally, she said, the more polluted the water, the more
turtlespresentwithFPtumors.
InHawaii,nitrogen(氮)runofffrompineapplefarmsincreasesthediseaseincidenceingreenseaturtlesnear
the islands, explained Bette Zirkelbach, manager at the Turtle Hospital. Scientists there first made the link
between poor water quality and increased FP tumors in green sea turtles. The Turtle Hospital is building on this
knowledge byleadinganin-waterscientific studyonseaturtle healthin theFloridaKeys forthenextthreeyears,
sheadded.
While external masses can be surgically removed, there is currently no treatment for internal FP tumors in
seaturtles,soanimalslikeTenoraarehumanelyputtodeathtoreducetheirsuffering,Zirkelbachsaid.
Phillips reflected on Tenora’s loss, saying, “I think it is terrible to consider that this is mostly caused by
humans.” He urged everyone, “Wake up. Do better.We’re all in this together,and if we don’t try to change how
we live our lives, things aren’t going to get any better. This is our chance to do something today for the next
generation.”

equipment.
Rather than havingto take a trip to the doctororuse a dedicateddevice, individuals might oneday beable
tomakeuseofthephoneintheirpocket,makingtheinnovationparticularlyimportantinunderservedpopulations
whereaccesstomedicalcareislimited.
Developed by researchers from the University of Pittsburgh, the app works by taking a variety of readings
from the accelerometer, camera, and touch sensors built into modern smartphones. What makes the app smart is
the wayitgets users to change theposition oftheir handstochange bloodflow,andapplya number ofinstructed
touchestothephonescreentogettherightpulsepressurereadings.“Becauseofgravity,there’sapressurechange
in your thumb when you raise your hands up above your heart, and using the phone’s accelerometer, you’re able
to convert that into the relative change in pressure,” says biomedical engineer Vishaal Dhamotharan from the
UniversityofPittsburgh.
In tests on 24 people and cross-referencing with a larger database, the app method detected pulse pressure
to a reasonably accurate level, within around 8 mm HG. As development continues, the app accuracy level will
mostlikelyimproveonthatevenfurther.
The researchers admit they’ll need to work on “changing the mindset” around using pulse pressure as a
blood pressure indicator—but it’s the best solution we’ve seen yet for taking this crucial reading using a normal
smartphone. “Development of a portable blood pressure measurement device that does not require any external
calibration (外部校准) is unrealistic—such a device currently does not exist,” says biomedical engineer Sanjeev
Shroff, from the University of Pittsburgh. “The research work reported in this publication is an important step in
therightdirection.”
