Israeli Boy Who Broke An Ancient Jar Learns How
The Museum Is Piecing It Back Together
HAIFA, Israel - Asher 4-year-old son checked the Israeli museum’s ancient artifacts, Anna Geller looked away
for just a moment. Then a crash sounded, a rare 3,500-year-old jar was broken on the ground, and her son stood over
it, shocked. “It was just a distraction of a second,” said Anna Geller, the boy’s mother. “And the next thing I know,
it’s a very big boom behind me.” “I’m embarrassed,” said Anna Geller, trying desperately to calm her son down after
the incident. Alex Geller said Ariel is exceptionally curious, and that the moment he heard the crash last Friday,
“please let that not be my child” was the first thought that raced through his head.
He went over to the security guards to let them know what had happened in hopes that it was a model and not a
real artifact. The father even offered to pay for the damage. “After they checked the cameras and saw it wasn’t
vandalism (故意破坏), they calmed us, saying it was insured.” Alex Geller said.
The Bronze Age jar Ariel broke last week has been on display at the Hecht Museum in Haifa for 35 years. It was
one of the only containers of its size and still complete when it was discovered. It was likely used to hold wine or oil,
and dates back to between 2200 and 1500 B. C. The jar was one of many artifacts exhibited out in the open, part of
the Hecht Museum’s vision of letting visitors explore history without glass barriers, said Inbar Rivlin, the director of
the museum. She said she wanted to use the restoration as an educational opportunity and to make sure the Gellers -
who shortened their initial museum visit soon after Ariel broke the jar last week - felt welcome to return. “Even if
accidents happen, touching an artifact can inspire a deeper interest in history and archaeology. I like that people touch.
Don’t break, but to touch things, it’s important,” she added.
4. What was Alex’s reaction when the accident happened?
A. He hoped it was caused by someone else.
B. He tried to calm the shocked boy down.
C. He was nervous and didn’t know what to do.
D. He felt guilty for not paying attention all the time.
5. What can we know about the artefact?
A. It was originally used to hold wine or oil. B. It was unbroken when it was found.
C. It is the only ancient artefact exhibited out. D. It was damaged by the boy on purpose.
6. What can be inferred about Inbar Rivlin’s words?
A. She felt Ariel should be blamed for the accident.
B. She cautioned the visitors to the museum to be careful.
C. She favored hands-on experience.D. She was interested in history and archaeology.
7. What is going to be discussed in the following paragraph?
A. The museum would claim the insurance for the damage.
B. The boy would observe the restoration process of the jar.
C. The family would return and pay for the restoration fees.
D. Inbar Rivlin would instruct the boy how to behave in the museum.

“Arrived in Bologna, Italy, today, now it’s off to Tuscany. The heatwave is unbearable here. If things continue
like this, these holiday destinations will have no future in the long term. Climate Change is destroying southern
Europe. An era comes to an End.” This tweet in early July by Karl Lauterbach, Germany’s health minister (部长),
went down badly in Italy.
The country’s minister for tourism, Daniela Santache, sourly retorted (回嘴) that she thanked Mr. Lauterbach
for picking Italy for his holiday, but the Italian government was well aware of climate change and that
environmental sustainability was one of the central elements of its strategy for managing tourism.
The tourism industry is not just an important contributor to Italy’s economy. Europe is the most visited area on
the earth, welcoming 585 million of the world’s 900 million international travelers in 2022. On top of this, domestic
(国内的) holiday makers outstripped foreigners in terms of more nights spent in tourist accommodation in the EU.
Little wonder then that tourism directly brings in 5% of the EU’s GDP and by some estimates indirectly
accounts for more than 10%. Some countries rely heavily on travelers’ contributions both direct and indirect,
including Croatia (20% of GDP), Italy (18.5%), Greece (13.6%) and Austria (10%).
Changes to the climate that lead to ever-wilder weather could give a heavy blow to the tourist industry. This
year, southern Europe has endured an extremely hot weather. Extremely hot weather in Greece contributed to
damaging wildfires as the temperature at one point climbed to 47°C in parts of the country, forcing hundreds of
locals to escape from their homes. Farther north, hailstorm killed several lives. Also in July, Italian authorities had
to evacuate thousands of tourists from Sicily after wildfires destroyed the island.
8. Why did Karl post the tweet?
A. Climate Change is destroying the whole Europe. B. His health went down for the heatwave.
C. Extremely hot weather cost him his holiday. D. He preferred touring in Tuscany to Bologna.
9. What does the underlined word “outstripped” mean?
A. Got ahead of. B. Looked forward to.
C. Warmly welcomed. D. Got attracted by.10. Which country could have suffered the most serious effects in tourism this year?
A. Greece. B. Italy. C. Croatia. D. Austria
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Europe Tourism suffered because of wild fires.
B. It’s really too hot to handle.
C. Extreme weather has affected where tourists go and when.
.
D How climate change hits the European holidaymaking.
C 9. A 10. B 11. D
Arrived in Bologna, Italy, today, now it’s off to Tuscany. The heatwave is unbearable
here. If things continue like this, these holiday destinations will have no future in the long term. Climate Change is
destroying southern Europe. An era comes to an End.” This tweet in early July by Karl Lauterbach, Germany’s
health minister (部长), went down badly in Italy.
根据画线词的下文“in terms of more nights spent in tourist accommodation in the EU (就在欧盟
故选A项。
Also in July, Italian authorities had to evacuate thousands of tourists from Sicily
after wildfires destroyed the island.
Changes to the climate that lead to ever-wilder weather could
give a heavy blow to the tourist industry.
D
ON HOLIDAY, MANY will find themselves in places where they do not speak the language. Once upon a time,
they might have carried a phrasebook. The rise of English has made that less necessary. But most people — at least
seven of the world’s eight billion — still do not speak English. That leaves options like gestures, a willingness to be
surprised by what arrives at dinner — or, increasingly, technology.
More and more people are using simple, free tools. With translation apps, you talk into a phone and a spoken
translation is heard moments later; the apps can also listen for another language and produce a translation in yours.
You may still get a surprise or two. Google Translate may be the best-known name in machine translation, but
it often makes mistakes. Take “my wife is gluten (麸质) -free”, the kind of thing you might say at a restaurant abroad.
In French or Italian, Google Translate translates this into “my wife is without gluten” — true to the words rather than
the meaning.
The best tool may not be a translation app at all. Though not marketed for the purpose, ChatGPT, which produces
texts according to users’ prompts (提示词), is multilingual.
Some are concerned that apps are turning language acquisition into a declining pursuit. Douglas Hofstadter, a
writer, has argued that something profound will vanish when people talk through machines. He describes giving a
speech in broken Mandarin, which required efforts but offered a sense of accomplishment at last. Who would boast
of (吹嘘) taking a helicopter to the top of Mount Everest?
Others are less worried. Most people do not have the kind of sustained contact with a foreign culture that requires
them to put in the work to become fluent. On their holiday, they just want a beer and the spaghetti without incident.
But a focus on the learner alone may miss the fundamentally social nature of language. When you try to ask
directions in broken Japanese, you are making direct contact with someone. And when you speak a language well
enough to tell a story fluently, it is more profound still. The best relationships probably do not require a medium.
12. What may happen for a person without any knowledge of English travelling in UK?
A. What he orders may not be what he wants.
B. He may get the ‘my wife is gluten-free’ dish.
C. He may get lost easily in some tourist attraction.
D. AI will help him out without any fail.
13. What does author think of GPT?
A. We must believe in it. B. It lacks translation ability.C. It is a multi-functional tool. D. It is a professional translation app.
14. Which idea may Hofstadter agree with?
.
A We should use resources available to get over difficulties.
B. We should live by the sweat of our brow.
C. We should enjoy the benefits brought by the modern technology.
D. We should avoid taking a helicopter.
15. What is the author’s attitude toward using AI to learn foreign languages?
A. negative. B. approving. C. supportive. D. cautious.
A 13. C 14. B 15. D

But most people — at least seven of the world’s eight billion — still do not speak
English. That leaves options like gestures, a willingness to be surprised by what arrives at dinner — or, increasingly,
故选A项。
The best tool may not be a translation app at all. Though not marketed for the
purpose, ChatGPT, which produces texts according to users’ prompts (提示词), is multilingual.(最好的工具可能
Douglas Hofstadter, a writer, has argued that something profound will vanish when
people talk through machines. He describes giving a speech in broken Mandarin, which required efforts but offered
a sense of accomplishment at last. Who would boast of (吹嘘) taking a helicopter to the top of Mount Everest?(作

Some are concerned that apps are turning language acquisition into
a declining pursuit.(有些人担心,应用程序正在使语言学习变成一种逐渐衰退的追求。)”

fundamentally social nature of language.(但是,仅仅关注学习者可能会忽略语言的根本社会属性。)”

Dear Tom,
I hope this letter finds you well. I understand your curiosity about using AI to complete your Chinese homework.
While I believe AI can be a valuable resource, I would like to share a few thoughts with you.
Firstly, it is indeed permissible to use AI for assistance, but it should be done in moderation. AI can provide a
broad perspective, which can be beneficial. However, it is crucial to confirm the accuracy and reliability of the
information provided by AI. Secondly, I strongly advise you to try to complete the homework independently as much

On December 1 of 2023, I made a deal with myself that I would give $1 to every homeless person who asked.
Still, to be honest, I started this practice thinking that I would just bleed money, and that I would run out of money
soon. This never happened. When I returned to Massachusetts, it took 8 days before I walked past a homeless
person who asked me for some spare change. I was wondering, “How could I step it up?!?”
Fast forward to last week. On my way to my MIT new year performance, I ran across a homeless person —
Tommy. I gave Tommy $1. Tommy was in tears. After a big hug, he went on to tell me that nobody listened to him.
Nobody looked at him, people just walked right by him without leaving anything and didn’t even acknowledge that
he was alive. My heart broke. We hugged on the street for a few seconds and then we went into the local
McDonalds where I ordered him a #6 fish meal (supersized of course!). After the meal, I told him I had to run and
said I’d see him soon.
The next day, when I walked past Tommy, I gave him a dollar again. But this time, I sat with Tommy, in the
cold, for an hour and a half. Mostly I just listened and was extremely humbled (感到卑微) by the experience of
simply sitting and watching my perspective change from being someone who simply walks by to someone who’s
now an unprivileged pan-handler. As we were talking, he was telling me about how upset he becomes when peopledon’t acknowledge him or they’ll crack up at his funny sign (“Voldermort (伏地魔) broke my life. Feeling hopeless
and Needing $ for a new start”). I knew right then that I was going to give him everything I had. Before I left, I
didn’t even count the money in my wallet. I just gave it all, it was probably more than $200. I didn’t miss it. More
will come and go in the future.
At that moment, I just wanted to convince him that what I offered was not just money.

Paragraph 1:
,
At that moment I just wanted to convince him that what I offered was not just money. In that second, I
got to give someone a dream, a little hope and if only for 5 minutes, peace of mind that the world isn’t a dark,
cynical, selfish place. I want to see more compassion, more people stopping by and helping the homeless,
acknowledging that they are alive and realizing that parting with $1 isn’t about the money. It’s about helping them
push through their own fear of change and enhance compassion in their lives. I was wondering what I could do to
step up my efforts to walk him out of shadow.
Paragraph 2:
Next up, I decided to make him a new sign. I spent several evenings meticulously sketching various designs
until I finally settled on one that resonated with me. The sign read, “One dollar warms stomach and one smile
warms heart”, words that encapsulated the idea to arouse more people’s compassion. When I met Tommy the next
day and presented him with the new sign, tears of appreciation streamed down his cheeks. He held the sign as if it
were a treasure, unwilling to divert his gaze away from it even for a second. Then we walked together through the
bustling streets of New York City, and I could see the difference it made.
