This is not a trip that many travelers experience; more famous destinations in China are more popular. But for
exploratory travelers looking for truly different trips, back-packing the Chinese Silk Road gets rewards. So pack your
bag and check out our guide to back-packing the Silk Road through China.
Don’t-miss sights
Overhanging Great Wall. Named because it looks like a dragon hanging over a cliff side, this part of the Great
Wall is one of the most amazing: a mud maze (迷宫) that winds its way up a desert mountain. The wall is open for
climbing and views from the top are unbelievable.
Turpan Grape Valley. China may not be known for its quality wine making just yet, but Turpan is home to one
of the oldest wine-making regions in the country. Sipping a fresh glass of white wine under grape trellises is a great
way to beat the desert heat.
Singing Sands Dune (沙丘). On the outskirts of Dunhuang, Singing Sands Dune is the first in a series of
thousands of dunes that make up the Taklamakan Desert. Adventurous types can get on top of the dune for great
views of more dunes and then sand-sled back to the bottom.
Tips and recommendations
Most of this route follows extreme desert, so pack for dry heat. Trains usually sell beer and wine, but at higher
prices, so be sure to pack your own. Mandarin is spoken throughout the region, but in some more remote areas, you
may find older people only speak local dialects or Uigher.
1. Who may be the target readers of this passage?
A. Travelers who like famous destinations in China.
B. Travelers who enjoy adventures and something new.
C. Travelers who choose travel agencies and join guided tours.
D. Travelers who prefer self-driving tours and enjoy the freedom.
2. What can tourists do in Overhanging Great Wall and Singing Sands Dune?
A. Enjoy a distant view. B. Drink white wine.
C. Explore a mud maze. D. Experience sand-sled.
3. What problem may travelers meet with on the route?
A. Transportation. B. Accommodation. C. Language. D. Coldness.

Bill Buda’s daughter Alexa Buda shared a video on her Instagram, documenting her dad’s last day as a mail
carrier in their neighborhood. In the clip, Bill Buda was seen delivering the mail to different houses while his family
accompanied him. Community members gathered to celebrate with drawings and sweet notes.
“People will NEVER forget how you made them feel.” he told Good Morning America. After being frequently
,
asked about his retirement he decided to choose Saturday to say goodbye to more people on his route. But he
didn’t expect to be so warmly welcome. “When you sec all that on Saturday, I guess for 24 and a half years on this
route, I really must have done something right. So it was fantastic.” he said.
He began working as a mailman in 1993 and hardly missed work. He said, “I was so lucky to work continuously
for 11 years. So, that’s something to hang my hat on.”
However, becoming a mailman wasn’t originally his plan. Being a basketball player in college, he was set to
play professionally overseas before he suffered from a heart problem. What’s worse, he lost jobs for several times
while working in a company after graduating with two college degrees. Later, his dad encouraged him to apply for
the job at the post office, where he then started working and never left.
Although some might think his job was “a piece of cake,” the actual responsibility was bigger than just deliveringmail. “They have no idea you’re peeking in on your elderly; you’re checking if that garage door should be shut…”
he explained, “If the mail piles up, you’d better go contact somebody.” As for his plan for retirement, he couldn’t
wait to attend any sporting event he could and get everyone in his family on schedule.

The old-fashioned word “demure” describing the sort of modest (端庄的) lady that Victorians admired is
freshly popular with 800,000 posts on TikTok tagged with “demure”. Youth today are using it with different
meanings to describe nearly everything.
TikTok where words spread far and fast is changing how young people talk. Old words like “coquette” are
fashionable again: members of Generation Z say “yapping” instead of “talking”. New words like “skibidi”
(meaning “cool”, “bad” or “very”) have also become popular. Each year at least 100 English words are produced or
given new meaning on TikTok. Some linguists (语言学家) think the platform is changing not just what young
people are saying, but how they are saying it.
The changing language on TikTok is also largely due to the age of its users. Most are 18-34 years old. For
decades young people have created words to tell themselves from adults. Such new expressions find a big audience
on social media. Christian IIbury, a linguist, describes this as “linguistic identity work”; parents have long called itattention-seeking. The TikTok platform also gathers fan groups and communities, from “kpopfans” (fans of Korean
pop music) to “booktokers” (reading fans), who create their own slang. Other slang comes from specific groups:
black people have created and spread hundreds of English words over the years, from “cool” to “tea” (gossip).
Journalists and screenwriters popularise such words; now TikTokers do, too.
All this speeds up the development of language on TikTok, which delights word lovers but confuses
dictionary-makers, who must keep a record of the ever-expanding vocabulary. The Oxford English Dictionary
(OED) adds a word only after it has been used for about five years. For example, “binge-worthy” is being added
while “rizz” (charm) hasn’t yet been included. TikTok has just the phrase to describe such a modest approach: very
demure.
8. Which of the following statements about “demure” is NOT true?
A. It is mainly used and spread online by old people.
B. It has gained growing popularity on TikTok recently.
C. It described modest women respected in the Victorian age.
D. It now can refer to something advancing slow or out of fashion.
9. What can we infer about “linguistic identity work”?
A. It is limited to kpopfans. B. It is developed by black people.
C. It sets the youth apart from adults. D. It harms the development of language.
10. Who may find the language on TikTok annoying?
A. Language creators. B. Kpop fans.
C. Dictionary-makers. D. Journalists and screenwriters.
11. What does the author intend to do in this passage?
A. To share the author’s own experience of using TikTok.
B. To describe the way language is widely used on TikTok.
C. To persuade readers to use words on TikTok like the youth.
D. To explain why TikTok is changing how and what the youth speak.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. C 11. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇新闻报道。文章围绕TikTok如何改变年轻人的语言使用习惯这一主题展开,介绍了相
关现象、原因及影响。

推理判断题。根据第三段“For decades young people have created words to tell themselves from adults. Such
new expressions find a big audience on social media.(几十年来,年轻人创造了一些词语来区分自己和成年人。
这些新表达在社交媒体上获得了大量用户)”可推知,“语言认同工作”有助于年轻人与成年人区分开来。
故选C。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“All this speeds up the development of language on TikTok, which delights word
lovers but confuses dictionary-makers, who must keep a record of the ever-expanding vocabulary.(所有这些都加

Scientists say they’ve discovered an earthquake-like event that can happen during a hurricane or other storms.
Researchers called it a “stormquake” after studying events caused by earthquakes on the sea floor during such
storms.
Strong energy from hurricanes and serious storms can create very large waves in the ocean. “These waves then
interact in some places with solid earth under the sea to cause intense seismic (地震的) source activity,” said the
leader researcher Fan, a professor at Florida State University, “The exciting part is that seismic sources caused by
hurricanes can last for hours or even days.”
The researchers found evidence (证据) of more than 10,000 stormquakes in coastal areas of the U.S. and Canada,
which have happened around sea floors containing flat land and at lower depths. But it was not known until recently
that such events even existed. This is mainly because scientists studying earthquakes had generally considered ocean-
caused seismic waves as “background noise”.The research found major U.S. hurricanes had produced a lot of stormquakes. One example was Hurricane Bill
in 2009 in the Atlantic Ocean, causing about 300 stormquakes as it moved north. But no such activity was recorded
in areas along the U.S. East Coast. The team noted that even Hurricane Sandy, one of the biggest storms in U.S.
history, did not cause a single stormquake. Fan says this suggests that stormquakes are strongly influenced by the
physical shape of the seafloor’s surface and seafloor conditions.
Fan added that there are still “lots of unknowns” about stormquakes. But he said discovering them “suggests we
are reaching a new level of understanding seismic waves”. He hopes the discovery will lead to improved study
methods for hurricanes, which in the past were mainly observed from satellites in the sky. “Now we are able to
understand it - or at least track part of its route - through the solid earth as well,” he said.
12. What is the characteristic of a stormquake according to this passage?
A. Being seasonal. B. Being unexpected.
C. Being long-lasting. D. Being global.
13. Why were stormquakes unknown to science before?
A. Because they were ignored by scientists.
B. Because they were hardly seen on the Earth.
C. Because they were similar to common earthquakes.
D. Because they generally happened in deep sea floors.
14. What message is conveyed in Paragraph 4?
A. All hurricanes don’t lead to stormquakes.
B. Stormquakes happen more along the East Coast.
C. Stormquakes influence the sea floor’s conditions.
D. Stronger hurricanes produce bigger stormquakes.
15. What is the significance of the discovery?
A. Helping to predict an earthquake more exactly.
B. Offering a different view on hurricane researches.
.
C Suggesting the richness of the seismic wave field.
D. Preventing possible hurricanes and lessening losses.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. A 15. B
