I took my 9-year-old daughter Susan and 5-year-old son Robbie, to the shopping centre. As we got there, we
saw a big sign that said, “Petting Zoo”. The kids jumped up and asked, “Daddy, can we go?”
Both my wife and I were out of work. However, I said, “Sure”, giving them a quarter each. They went away,
leaving only fifty cents left in my pocket.
A petting zoo is made up of a hundred of little baby animals of all kinds. Kids pay their money and stay in the
enclosure (围场) pleased with the little animals while their parents shop.
A few minutes later, I saw Susan walking along behind me. I was surprised and asked what was wrong.
She said sadly, “Well, Daddy, a ticket for petting zoo costs fifty cents. So I gave Robbie my quarter.” Then she
said the most beautiful thing I ever heard. She repeated the family motto (座右铭), which is “Love is Action!”

Nervously, but for courage (勇气), I hold the rope of my guide dog Coco when we pass by my neighbor’s yard.
Walking by Mr. Smith’s yard is the best part of our morning walk … and also the worst.
The sweet smell of the roses in Mr. Smith’s yard is the best. The worst comes from Mr. Smith. “Hello, Mr.
Smith.” I greet him as usual, and he doesn’t reply (回复).
But I know he’s there and he closes the gate quickly.
I wonder why Mr. Smith ignores me. Why can’t two people who like roses be friends? It’s a question to me.
Maybe because I’m blind? Disabilities sometimes scare people. But I heard him playing chess with Jimmy
who’s in a wheelchair.
Maybe local people dislike foreigners? But he and my brother Joe are friends. Maybe because I’m a girl? But
when my friend Helen greets him, he says hello to her warmly.
So Mr. Smith likes Jimmy, Joe and Helen, but not me and Coco!
Suddenly I come to know why he doesn’t talk to me.
I tie Coco to a tree, feel my way and move slowly. His gate opens. “Jenny! Be careful!”Mr. Smith shouts
worriedly and takes me by the arm.
“Mr. Smith, I thought you didn’t like me. But now I guess it’s because of Coco—you are afraid of her?” I ask
him in a low voice.
“Yeah, Jenny. Your Coco is a very… big dog.” Mr. Smith laughs.

Kids who volunteer aren’t just helping their community. They might be helping themselves. That’s according to
a recent study in JAMA Network Open. It found that volunteering through school or community groups is connected
with better wellness among children and teens.
The study compared kids who took part in community service with those who didn’t. Kids who volunteered
were 66% more likely to be considered “growing well” or doing well in general. And kids aged 12 and older who
volunteered were 25% less likely to have worries than those who didn’t. The findings come from survey data (数据).
Parents of some 50,000 kids in the United States aged 6 to 17 took the survey.
Studies like this have limitations (局限性). The data can’t prove cause and effect. So it’s not possible to say for
sure that volunteering leads to better mental and physical health. It could be that people in good health are more

likely to have the energy to volunteer. But the data comes at an important time. More than 40% of high school
students reported experiencing feelings of sadness or hopelessness in 2021.
So there’s a clear need for mental health resources (资源). Giving back to the community may be one such
resource. And this study isn’t the only one to reach that result. Some research has also found connections between
volunteering and well-being among adults. Serving the community seems to help people feel a sense of purpose. And
it makes them feel connected to those around them. So give it a try, for your health.

A.To give readers some advice. B.To ask readers to volunteer in schools.

A.By listing some numbers. B.By telling some stories.
C.By giving some examples. D.By raising some questions.

Chris is not a traditional explorer—he usually works in an office for a large organization. Yet his job can
sometimes be just as exciting and dangerous as being an explorer.
Chris works for MSF, an organization also known as Doctors Without Borders (国界). MSF sends trained
doctors all over the world to help people after a war or a disaster. Chris is a doctor from France who has traveled to
many places to organize programs that help people.
At the moment, there are over 27, 000 trained medical staff taking part in MSF projects and tasks. The
organization received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999, All kinds of doctors can volunteer for MSF. They need to be
prepared to go almost anywhere in the world and, of course, they should expect difficult conditions. Doctors with
experience in tropical (热带的) diseases are especially useful because most of MSF’S work is in Africa. When MSF
accepts a doctor for a task, he has to go for at least six months. When doctors have completed a few tasks, they might
be sent on an emergency task following a disaster, such as an earthquake.
But why would a doctor leave a comfortable life and a good salary to join MSF? According to Chris, the
experience you gain is a great help in your career. Besides, just like the explorers of the past, you need to keep an
open mind and learn to mix well with the people you meet. Most importantly, at the end of each task, you have made
a real difference to people’s lives.
根据短文内容,回答下列问题。
1. Does Chris work for a large organization?
2. When does MSF send trained doctors all over the world to help people?
3. How many medical staff are taking part in MSF projects and tasks?

Last summer, I got an opportunity to volunteer at a Children's Home in the community. My main duty was to
take care of children aged five to seven years old. They were very friendly. They showed me big smiles when they
saw a bag of gifts I brought for them. I did lots of things with them. I told stories, sang songs, and taught them
