One particularly cold Saturday in January, I was supposed to take our dog out for a walk, but it was so cold
that I didn’t want to go outside. Instead, I just opened the door and let the dog out by himself. I kept an eye on him
to make sure he would come back inside.
However, another neighborhood dog quickly ran past our house, and our dog sped after to catch him. I
hurriedly went to grab my coat so I could follow my dog, and then I rushed outside. Unfortunately, I was already
too late, and my dog was nowhere in sight. I walked a few blocks, but I was unable to find him.
Depressed, I returned home. My mother was standing at the door waiting, and she asked me what had
happened. “I know I was supposed to walk our dog,” I admitted, “but I thought he would be able to go outside and
come back by himself. Now he’s gone and I can’t find him anywhere.”
My mother was very angry with me; she said I should have been more responsible. She decided to help by
making some signs. The signs read, “Lost: A big black dog. Please call us right away” and she printed our phone
number on the bottom. “Okay, Darrell,” she said, as she handed over those signs, “now go post these on all the
street posts.”
My sister and I grabbed the signs and we posted them along our street as well as along the surrounding streets.
The whole time, I was incredibly sad and worried about our dog. All I could think about was how cold it was and
how cold our dog must be. My sister wanted to go home, so I told her I’d walk her home, but then keep looking for
the dog myself.

I took my sister home and continued my search alone. Carrying the signs made by my mother, I kept posting
them. In the meantime, whenever there were people passing by, I would ask if they had met such a dog. I even
knocked from door to door, asking if they had seen it. No luck. Nobody claimed to have spotted our dog. What if I
had taken the dog out for a walk? Tears of regret welled up in my eyes. As the darkness fell, I decided to come back
home to check if anybody had called.
When I returned, my mother was waiting for me, smiling broadly. There, behind my mother, was our lovely
dog looking up at me eagerly. Upon seeing me, it raced towards me. I couldn’t hold my tears. “It just came back by
itself,” my mother said gently. Hugging the dog with relief, I apologized to my mother sincerely. “I am sure you
have learned your lesson today,” my mother replied in a comforting voice. I played with my sister and the dog
again. Despite the freezing weather outside, my heart warmed up. It was on the day that I learned the value of
responsibility.

Our Garden and the Salad
“Christine, come and help me in the garden. I want to plant all of the seeds today.” My father was calling to
me. “I'm busy...” I said. I didn't understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.
By the end of April, his plants had come up in neat rows. Unfortunately, in early May, my father was seriously
injured in an accident. He was in hospital for about two months and during that time he often asked me about his
garden. Even after he came home, he had to stay in bed for a while.
My mother had several business trips so I said that I would take care of his garden. I assumed that the littleplants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained fairly often so I didn't think much
about the garden.
One Saturday morning in July, my father said to me, “Christine, I think that the vegetables should be about
ready to be picked. Let's have a salad today!” I took a bowl and went out to the garden. I looked at the leaves and
was upset to see that many of the leaves had been half eaten. There were hundreds of bugs (虫子) all over them! I
tried to get them off, but there were just too many. I looked at the carrots next, but they didn't look healthy.
I got in panic for a moment, but then thought of a good idea. I quietly went to the nearest store to buy some
vegetables. I went back home and cut them up to make a salad for my father. When I gave it to him, he said, “Oh,
Christine, what a beautiful salad! You must be taking very good care of my garden.” My father looked happy, but I
felt a little bit guilty.

【答案】One possible version:I went back to the kitchen when my mother came home. She saw the bag from the supermarket. I was
embarrassed and told her the truth. She laughed but promised to make time to help me in the garden. We made a
mixture of water with chopped up fresh hot peppers and then watered it on the vegetables. The water is not harmful
but can drive away the bugs. The bug free vegetables grew quickly, and finally I was able to pick some.
I carefully made a salad and took it to my father. He looked at it with a smile. “Christine, the carrots are
smaller in this salad, but they taste better.” I realized that he had known all along about my shopping trip. I smiled
back at him. Now, I better understand how putting a lot of effort into caring for something can help you appreciate
the results more, however small they may be.

Forty-year-old Rao had absolutely no intention of going fishing on that Monday, June 16th.He was still
recovering from an injury, but his friends had managed to convince him otherwise.
The monsoon had already arrived, but it looked like a good day for fishing. Rao checked his phone for weather
updates, before climbing into the boat. There were six others, all fishermen. The men lifted the anchor and set out.
They brought a little water and food and blocks of ice to preserve the fish they would catch. If the catch was good,
they would turn back early the next morning and head to the market.
At first, it was sunny. But as morning turned to afternoon, the sky changed color, and the sun hid behind the
clouds. Soon, it became dark, and then it started raining. Perhaps it was best to wait for the weather to settle before
returning. But it only got worse-the waves grew higher, finally damaging one of the engines. The fishermen did not
panic still, quickly repairing what was possible to fix. Then, early on Tuesday morning, the radar broke, as did the
anchor. Exhausted and frightened, the seven men stayed close to each other as the violent sea tried to destroy their
boat. For lack of shelter, they soon lost whatever food and water they had.
Feelings of hopelessness hit Rao, but he refused to give in. As the boat threatened to capsize for the 10th time,
he drew on years of fishing experience and tried controlling the boat through the angry waves. Twice, he nearly lost
friends to the sea, but somehow, with his heart in his mouth, while motivating them, Rao managed to pull them
back in. Finally, the waves calmed down. But the men didn’t know how to get back home. Rao tied an orange towel
on a pole, hoping someone could notice them.

Having struggled with financial difficulties for six months and failing to find a way out, I had to close my
technology writing business. Fortunately, I found a new job as a salesperson and soon got a client. At the time, I
wondered if it was too good to be true.
By the second month, something didn’t seem right, and I developed a bad feeling about the client and the
work. When the third month’s check didn’t arrive on time, I sent the client an e-mail to find out what was going on.
But there was no reply. Then I sent another e-mail, and another. The check never arrived, and I never heard from
the client again. With no hope in sight, I hit rock bottom. Panic replaced cautious optimism along with my last self-
confidence.
I hid myself from friends and locked myself in my room. One night, the phone rang. The call was from Eric, a
friend of mine from high school. When he was in high school, he told me many times about his parents’ divorce andhis loss of confidence in the college entrance examination. During the difficult time, I gave him much comfort and
encouragement. Later, he went to college and was always grateful for what I had done.
After the greetings, I told my problems and challenges, hoping my friend would say something comforting.
What I didn’t expect was a string of sharp words. “What is wrong with you? You can do anything you want to do,”
he said. “You are a writer, so start writing. Write for magazine.” “Write for magazine? Are you out of your mind? I
don’t know the first thing about writing for magazine, let alone write things that anyone would want to read. And I
have to know where I can send an application form-to what magazine and to what editor,” I shouted at him.

Surprisingly, I felt a little better after the shouting. After a short silence, Eric replied in a firm voice. “I always
remember what you said when I was in trouble. You said ‘No one can get you out of trouble but yourself. ’ ”
Hearing that, I was speechless and struck by the fact that it was easier to convince others than to convince myself.
Inspired by Eric’s words, I started searching for magazines the next day and finally found one that accepted online
contributions with various topics. Then I began to prepare my application form.
On finishing the application form I sent it to the editor. Luckily, two days later I received a positive response
and an invitation to write. At first, I only wrote articles I was expert in. Gradually, I began trying new types. One
day, much to my amazement, one of my articles appeared on the first page of the magazine! Since then, I have been
on my way to becoming an excellent writer. That definitely should be credited to Eric. It was he who enlightened
me and helped me regain confidence to face challenges in my life.(2022·重庆一中模拟预测)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的

Even after two years in the club, he never played in a match. He was not even allowed to travel along with the

You know how when big things in your life aren’t going well, the little things bother you more? Yet one tiny
kind act that appears in the path may easily light up your whole life and give you hope again.
Like many people during the pandemic, my husband, Paul, had been laid off. I was still working, but my job
would likely be ending soon too. I was worried about money, Covid-19 and our future. That’s when our mailbox
really started getting to me.
The mailbox, relic from the previous homeowners, had already been in rough shape when we moved in. The
paint was faded. The metal pole holding up the box was rusted. It stood at the end of our long driveway, far enough
away from our house. Every time I saw it, it just reminded me of all the problems in my life. “I wish we had a
better mailbox, ”I found myself thinking as I pulled out of the driveway. I probably would have forgotten all about
it if it were not for the news we got one morning.
“Shelly just texted, ”Paul said. Shelly was a neighbor and a good friend. “A girl drove her car right into the
mailbox. Completely mowed it down. ”I sighed, heart almost falling apart. “Shelly saw it happen. The driver, just a
teenager, wasn’t hurt, but she was really upset, ”Paul added.
As much as I wanted a new mailbox, getting it would be expensive. “That certainly wasn’t in the budget, ”I
thought. I guess it’s true what they say: Be careful what you wish for.
I went to work in low spirits. While doing the usual tasks, I received a text from Shelly again, “That teenagegirl named Audree came by and repaired your mailbox.”

shining yellow color and perfect shape, which was also dotted with some cute patterns. I was moved by this girl’s

Para. 2:
With the help of the note, we called at Audree’s home. We knocked door and her mother answered. We

People use the proverb “seeing is believing” to describe situations where it’s hard to believe something is
possible if you haven’t seen it happen. I am here today to tell you that the proverb is true and to share with you how
a girl and her grandmother made a positive transformation in a community. It was a year ago when I was studying life cycles in my science class. I wrote a paper about the life cycle of
the monarch butterfly (帝王蝶) and received a perfect score. I was so thrilled; I called my grandmother Nana and
told her the exciting news. My talk recalled memories from Nana’s childhood. “I remember when I was a girl,” she
said, “those orange and black butterflies were a common sight. Come late summer, there would suddenly be
hundreds of them, and before long there were so many it felt like you were standing in an orange cloud.”
“It sounds like you witnessed a migration (迁徙), but what happened to them?” I asked. “To be honest, I’ve
never known,” Nana admitted. “But there do seem to be fewer monarchs around the neighborhood.” Nana and I
decided to investigate.
That weekend, we met at the public library. Our research produced plenty of information: some fascinating
and some concerning. Apparently, the number of monarchs has been in decline for the last several decades. Housing
developments have destroyed much of their habitat (栖息地). Some information was hopeful, though, like how
conservationists are working to save them.
The best was this — it doesn’t take lots of money or equipment to do so. It takes only a little bit of land, some
seeds, and dedicated people to create what’s called a Monarch Waystation (驿站).
“What if we set up our own Monarch Waystation?” I suggested. “We’ll need people to help.” Nana responded
immediately and didn’t waste time to get started.

【答案】 The next day, Nana presented the idea to her garden club and I talked to my friends. Manypeople started to plant flowers in their gardens. Nana’s garden club convinced the city government to plant a
butterfly garden next to the city fountain. My friends and I spread leaflets telling people how to build Monarch
Waystations. More and more people took action to make our community monarch-friendy. As spring turned into
summer, we found our efforts started to work! A few dozen orange and black butterflies were spotted visiting the
waystations. As summer progressed, the monarchs grew more plentiful.
Nana and I created a blog and frequently updated about the community’s efforts. Monarch enthusiasts from
across the country contacted us with their own observations, ideas and reflections. Then it happened one day when
the sun was shining and the sky was a deep blue, just like Nana remembered a few fluttering (颤动的) orange
wings soon became hundreds of soaring butterflies. As monarchs sailed above and around us, Nana cried tears of
happiness and gave me an enormous hug. It was truly a spectacular experience. Now I know what it means to stand
in an orange cloud of monarchs. I know what people mean when they say, “Seeing is believing.” I learn that if we
believe in something strong enough and work to make it happen, we will see our goal become a reality.

When I was six years old, I visited my grandfather’s farm in Kansas and he sent me into the woods to gather
pecans (胡桃) for us to enjoy later. The pecans were about the size of a man’s thumbnail and just about the tastiest
snack I’d ever had.
However, pecan picking was really tiring and my little bucket was only half full after working hard for a long
time. I thought I wouldn’t let Grandpa down. Just then something caught my eye. A large brown squirrel was a few
feet away. I watched as he picked up a pecan, hurried to a tree, jumped up to the trunk and disappeared in a large
hole. A moment later the squirrel popped back out and climbed down to the ground to pick up another nut. Once
again, he took the pecan back to his hiding place inside the hollow of the tree.
Not so secret anymore, I thought. I dashed over to the tree and looked into the hole. It was filled with pecans!
Golden pecans were right there for taking. This was my chance. Handful by handful, I scooped all of those pecans
into my bucket. Now it was almost full! I was so proud of myself that I couldn’t wait to show Grandpa all the
pecans.
I ran back and shouted, “Look at all the pecans!” He looked into the bucket and asked, “Well, well, how didyou find so many?” I told him how I’d followed the squirrel and taken the pecans from his hiding place.
Grandpa congratulated me on how smart I’d been in observing the squirrel and his habits. Then he did
something that surprised me. He handed the bucket back to me and put his arm gently around my shoulders.

“That squirrel worked very hard to gather his winter supply of food,” he said. “Now that all of his pecans are
one, don’t you think that little squirrel will be hungry when it gets cold?” Grandpa asked me. “I didn’t think about
that,” I murmured with shame, blood rushing to my face. Grandpa told me seriously that a good man should never
take advantage of someone else’s hard work, even the squirrels. I drooped my head, feeling as hollow as that old
tree. The image of that starving squirrel wouldn't leave my mind. There was only one thing I could do.
I picked up that little bucket full of pecans and carried it back to the tree. Lifting the bucket up, I poured all of
the nuts back into the hole, refilling it with not only all of the squirrel’s pecans but also the ones I had collected on
my own. I breathed a sigh of relief and returned home with the empty bucket. I didn’t eat any of the sweet pecans
that night, but I had something much more filling, which was the satisfaction of knowing I had done just the right
thing.

My daughter and I were fans of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, an educational children’s television series that
was created and hosted by Fred Rogers, more commonly known as Mister Rogers.Around my daughter’s second birthday, I had a Mister Rogers-inspired idea. Why not invite one key person in
my daughter’s world to dinner each month? The local children’s librarian could visit one evening, and perhaps the
borough mayor (区长) could drop by a few weeks later.
But I wanted to start at the top.
“Let’s invite Mister Rogers himself, ” I said to my wife. “After all, he lives just a few neighborhoods away. I
bet he’d come.”
She looked at me as if I wanted to invite the President. “You really think Mister Rogers would come to our
house for dinner? Fat chance.”
Undeterred (不气馁的), I sent a letter to Mister Rogers that fall, telling him of my newfound delight in his
show and my idea for inviting neighborhood people over to talk about their lives, and asking him and Mrs. Rogers
to be our guests.
I told my daughter about the letter. Her eyes glistened (发光). “Mister Rogers coming? Really, Daddy?”
One month later, no reply. My daughter hadn’t forgotten and periodically asked when Mister Rogers would be
visiting. I always told her that he hadn’t called yet and that it was a good opportunity to learn about patience.
Two months later, no response. At the three-month mark, my wife simply rolled her eyes when I raised the
topic. I was beginning to lose optimism. Mister Rogers had let me down.
Sadly, Mister Rogers passed away in late February of the following year. I was unaware of his illness and now
understood why our invitation had gone unanswered. Mister Rogers would not be coming to dinner after all. Yet,
even after his passing, Mister Rogers gave us a far greater gift than I ever could have imagined.

A week later, I was surprised to find a letter in our mailbox from Mister Rogers. With my trembling hands, I
fingered the letter and read it word for word. He appreciated my daughter’s enjoyment of his program and thanked
us for our invitation, adding that he was much honored to be our “guest” . But he apologized for not responding
sooner and not being able to make it to our dinner party then due to his stomach cancer treatment. In a delightful
tone he expressed his wish to meet some day. The one-page typed letter was like something from an old friend:
personal and caring.
The letter is a treasured gift and his kind words touched my life and my daughter. We could never imagine it
was written when he was then suffering great pains. Mister Rogers is gone, but his remarkable talents are left
behind. Rogers never came for dinner, but his belief in the importance of being good neighbors is passed on. His
spirits will never die: caring for people including the unknown, hoping for the future, and most importantly, posing
a positive attitude to life whatever happens. When least expected, sometimes the best presents in life come from a
special neighbor.

As I sit here thinking and making an attempt to piece together an answer to the question on this application to

realize life is not always pleasant and it does not always have to end at the age of 90 or 100. sometimes it can be 16
or 17.
It was towards the beginning of last year that I had made a discovery in my throat. It seemed like a lump and I
didn’t give it much attention although sometimes it did bother me. But it wasn’t until March that I came to know I
was suffering from thyroid cancer.
The word cancer has always scared me. It always made me think about death but I had always thought that
cancer was only for people aged 40 and up; young kids like me didn’t get cancer! Needless to say, the news was
shocking. I couldn’t believe it. I thought, “This is wrong; it can’t be!” But the reality was that I had thyroid cancer
and had to fight and succeed in the end.
My parents came home with the devastating news and they were heartbroken. That was when it all started--
one blood test after another, a painful biopsy, many other scans and X-rays.
Unfortunately the doctors were never able to find the cause of this disease occurring among young kids. Allthey said was that “we need to take her thyroid out before it’s too late.”
On August 2nd, 2007, around 10 am the surgery was done and the doctors were able to remove my thyroid
gland. I woke up and saw all these tubes attached to my throat and nose. The next couple of days were too painful
filled with just more blood tests. Success as I achieved, I still bear the scar on my neck, a reminder of what I have
been through. I am not saying this for any sort of sympathy but it is the incident that has truly changed my life.

From this I realized how short life can be and in an instant anything can happen that can totally change my
life. But I kept trying and fighting instead of giving up. This was the point where I realized that I had to succeed in
life. I believed that if I could fight cancer I could accomplish anything else. I took up challenges and succeeded. I
am not discouraged if I fail because I know success doesn’t always come easily. It takes time and hard work.
In addition, this incident has also shaped my career goals. I have always loved bioscience and this incident
made me more interested. Maybe someday I might find the cause of this disease. I am planning to major in biology
and eventually become a doctor. I am reminded by my parents every time that being a doctor is not easy. It takes
determination, hard work and above all the willpower to achieve the ultimate goal. I know that this incident hadshaped these characteristics and other features in my life. I can make it.

As a single mother, I’ve never doubted my daughter Jane’s dream to be a singer on the stage. At an early age,
she was crazy about singing. Whenever she had a chance, she would sing to her heart’s content. Her sweet and
charming voice tended to get people around attracted to her songs.
Living in a small city, I took several odd jobs, determined to do everything in my power to support her. Soon
after Jane attended school, her music teacher Mary noticed her talent by chance and volunteered to give her some
guidance on how to sing. Jane practiced so hard that before long she made great progress in singing.
Unfortunately, one noon a year later, Jane was crossing the street when a careless driver knocked her down.
She was rushed to hospital. When I hurried there, the doctor told me that my daughter would probably not stand on
her own feet. I froze with shock, feeling as if I had been thrown into a dark world. Weak and dizzy, I was about to
fall to the ground when someone took hold of me.
It was Mary, who got the news and raced here. She comforted me, saying firmly, “Grace, Jane needs you. You
must stay calm and strong.” I nodded. Having calmed down, I entered the ward with Mary.
That night, Jane recovered her consciousness (知觉) and opened her eyes. Holding her hand, I said, “My dear,
everything would be fine.” Mary comforted her gently, “I know you are a strong girl, Jane. Don’t worry. We’ll be
standing by you.” I was heartbroken to see tears streaming down Jane’s cheeks.
After two months, we returned home from hospital. Her teachers and friends frequently visited her. Jane
eventually accepted the fact that she would have to get around in a wheelchair. Never did she refer to the subject of
singing again. I knew she was a nice and understanding girl, who was afraid that talking about her original dream
would upset the two of us.

【答案】 One day, however, Mary came with good news. She told Jane the school music festival was to
be held the next month and that her classmates all expected her to sing on behalf of her class. Jane’s eyes sparkled
but responded doubtfully, “Can I...?” Mary and I immediately assured her that she could make it. In the following
month, with the help of Mary, Jane kept on practicing singing. Beautiful songs echoed in our house again and
smiles began to appear on her face. Finally the big day came when she could present herself.
When the host announced it was Jane’s turn, she was wheeled onto the stage. Jane was greeted with warm
applause. As she began to sing, the audience got absorbed in her beautiful voice. Seconds after her performance, all
the audience rose with thunderous cheers. When wheeled off stage, Jane received praise and bunches of flowers
from her teachers and classmates. Jane was moved to tears. The kindness and encouragement from her teachers and
classmates stimulated Jane’s enthusiasm for life, making her regain confidence in pursuing her original dream,
which I will support wholeheartedly.

“Be quiet.” No one actually ever said that to me — in fact, it was usually the opposite “Speak up.” “What did
you say?” “I couldn’t understand you.” But every time someone told me to be louder, to be clearer, I wanted to shut
my mouth and never open it again.
Years of living with a lisp (口齿不清) had taught me that it was better to say nothing than to speak and risk
being misunderstood, leading to embarrassment and awkwardness. As a result of my silence, I felt distanced from
most of my peers, having only a few people I felt were friends. “Kathryn? Oh, she’s quiet.” That’s what most
people would say when they thought of me. “Quiet” might as well have been part of my name. I was okay with
that. I didn’t need to be heard.
September of last year that all changed.
I started my first day of creative writing class with Ms. Haist. She is one of those teachers you don’t feel
frightened to approach; you know she will help you if you need it. I had expected to fill out plot diagrams and learn
the proper way to punctuate dialogue. However, every day we would be given a different writing prompt (提示词)
and then, if we wished, we could share what we had written with the class. I remember sitting and listening to
others read their work, and I distinctly remember thinking: That will never be me. I’ll never have the courage to do
that. Then, one day in October, I was really pleased with what I had written, so pleased that I wanted to share. I
remember my heart pounding in my chest as I raised my hand to read, and those urgent little voices in my mind
listing all the reasons why it wasn’t a good idea: They won’t understand you. You have a lisp, remember? Besides,
your writing isn’t that good. Be quiet. Be quiet. I was about to withdraw my hand when I met Ms. Haist’s
encouraging eyes.

【答案】I swallowed the voices down and let my real voice come out. At first, my voice was very low. I read my
articles carefully. After I finished the first paragraph fluently, my classmate’s eyes all looked at me with affirmation.
Having finished reading this article, I was praised by Ms. Hester for the content that I wrote and the changes that I
made in class. It was the first time that I had received warm applause from my teachers and classmates. When I
went home, a card was found in my notebook with a sentence saying “everything is possible”. There was no doubt
that it was given to me by Ms. Hester.
Soon I was reading out loud nearly every day. In the morning, I would practice my favorite novels near the
grove at school, because I wanted to realize my dream. My dream is to become an announcer in the next semester,
which would entitle me to share the students’ writing and my favorite articles. In class, I tried my best to seize
every opportunity to improve myself. Gradually, I began to have normal conversations with my classmates and got
along well with them. Everything in life was becoming more and more beautiful.

Time was literally flying faster than you could blink. It was already dark. Poor George still scratched every
inch of his head for some spark of inspiration. Their teacher had asked every student to write a composition. Thetitle was An Unforgettable Weekend. A both interesting and boring topic.
Just as George was wrestling with his composition, there came a knock on the door. It was Eric, his
father.“George, since tomorrow is Saturday, we will go and see your grandparents!“ he beamed.“Williams and
Jenny? I really miss them!” George jumped with joy, dumping his pen on the desk. After all, George hadn’t been
reunited with his grandparents since the outbreak of Covid- 19 in 2020.
Early next morning they began their long journey. George’s grandparents lived in a remote countryside. As
Eric was driving, George couldn’t help recalling his past experience staying in his grandparents’. The memories of
dusty tracks, some shabby houses and the smelly river still hurt painfully.“Dad, was your hometown beautiful when
you lived there?“ George asked curiously.“You bet it! Our life wasn’t good, but the scenery was definitely like a
picture,”Eric responded with noticeable pride. But what George worried about was that instead of having an
unforgettable day, he would be greeted with unforgettable gray, He had been deeply scared by the smog there.
With a soft brake, the car stopped, pulling George from the edge of a sweet daydream.“Here we are! Home,
sweet home!” Eric said, bouncing out, happy as a kid. Out of the car, what George saw was really unforgettable.
The old and small house had been replaced by a new and big one, solid and strong. Just as George was wondering
what happened, the door opened and his grandparents strode out, wearing big smiles. Approaching George,
Williams gave him a tight embrace. Jenny talked eagerly with Eric. Inside the house, they provided updates on each
other.

quickly got the hang of the work. But before long, his waist ached. ”Have a strawberry; it will give you power,”
Williams said merrily. George put one into his mouth. Wow! lt exploded like a little flavor bomb! This renewed his
energy. Two hours later, they were done.“ A dealer will come at 6:00 to buy all these,” Grandpa told George. Then
they went home. Back at home, George knew what to write.
George set out to write the composition.“I had a very unforgettable weekend picking strawberries,” he startedit.“Bathed in brilliant sunlight, all strawberry plants thrived, their green leaves dancing in the breeze,” he continued.
Words were bouncing in his head. He mentioned his blisters on palms, adding the finishing touches to the
composition. When Monday came, he handed it in. As George had imagined,it was rated the best one. But what he
didn’t expect was that his classmates all wanted some blisters.

Sometime during the seventh grade two things happened to me. The first was that I got hooked on salami (腊
肠). The other thing was that my mom and I weren’t getting along really well. We weren’t fighting really badly or
anything, but we didn’t laugh together much anymore. Things were changing, and my mom and I were the first to
feel it.
As far as the salami went, my mom wouldn’t buy any because she said it was too expensive and not that good
for me. To prove my emerging independence, one day I used my pocket money to buy a full sausage of dry salami.
I didn’t want my mom to see it. So I hid it in the only place that I knew was totally safe — under my bed. There
was a special corner under the bed that the upright hoover couldn’t reach. Under the bed went the salami, back in
the corner — in the dark and the dust.
A couple of weeks later, I remembered the delicious treat that was waiting for me. I peered beneath the bed
and saw... not the salami that I had hidden, but some green and hairy object that didn’t like anything that I had ever
seen before. The salami had grown about an inch of hair, and the hair was standing straight up, as if the salami had
been surprised by the sudden appearance of my face next to its hiding place. Being a picky eater, I was not
interested in consuming any of this object.
Some time later, my mom became obsessed with spring cleaning, which in her case meant she would clean
places that had never seen the light of day. I knew in my heart that the moment would soon come when she would
find the object in its hiding place. During the first two days of her cleaning, I watched carefully to judge the time
when I thought she would find the salami, She washed, she scrubbed, she dusted... she screamed! “Ahhhhhh...
ahhhhh... ahhhhh!” The screams were coming from my room. Alarms went off in my head. She had found the
salami!

【答案】 “What is it, Mom?” I yelled as I ran into my room. “There is something under your
bed!” Mom screamed, “I don’t know what it is! Maybe it’s alive.” I opened my eyes wide to show my complete
innocence. I was about to look under my bed when she pushed me to one side. I was proud of the bravery that she
was demonstrating to save me. My mom bent down and poked the corner, using the handle of a broom. Hard as she
poked the salami, it didn’t move. At that point, my chest was squeezing with an effort to restrain my laughter.
When my mom continued pushing it hard, I finally burst out laughing. “Mom, it’s a salami!” I gasped for
breath. She gazed at me with disbelief. “I bought it with my pocket money.” My laughter gradually faded and gave
way to fear. She stood up, perspiration beaded on her flushed face. Abruptly laughter exploded from her mouth. I
burst into laughter again. The two of us laughed until tears rolled down our cheeks. That day I ended up cleaning up
the salami and my mom never blamed me for buying it. I guessed she thought I had already paid a price. The salami
provided a memory of shared, unrestrained laughter.

As I sat on the bus waiting to arrive at school, the sun shining, I just sat there full of excitement ready to enjoy
the first day of spring. At last, the bus stopped and I started my day.
The whole day I was waiting for one thing, noon break. As the day passed by, I heard the bell rang and
everyone rushed out of the door. I hurried and ate lunch just to get outside.
As soon as I was out, my close friend, Riley called me over to play basketball. We all started playing and time
flew by as we heard the timekeeper yell, “10 more minutes.” From that point on, the game sped up. Score after
score, the competition process was more intense. I passed it to my teammate, Austin, and he dished it back as Ipulled up a shot. I felt as if the world around me were barely moving, and all I concentrated on was the ball going
to the hoop (篮筐). Not knowing I was pushed back hard, I hit the ground. A huge pain entered my left ankle. I
wanted to scream, but I didn’t, hearing the people around me shout for help. I just lay there as Riley came over to
pick me up and Austin fetched a wheelchair from the school clinic. Both of them helped me sit on the wheelchair. It
seemed like the whole school circled around me as I was being pushed away.
The moment we entered the clinic where I always felt nervous, I didn’t think my ankle hurt as badly as it did
just now, so I said, “I’m okay.” Then they had to send me back to class without any treatment. The rest of the day I
felt my ankle swelling (肿) up and I thought of how stupid I was to say that my ankle didn’t hurt in the clinic. “I
should have gone home.” I thought to myself as I was thrown through this terrible pain. After school, I worried how
to go back home.

Just then I found Riley come in with an ice pack in his hand. From his look, I could easily read his
concern, which instantly brought tears to my eyes. He asked if my ankle swelled, his voice obviously full of careand anxiety. I nodded helplessly, eyes automatically settling on my aching ankle. Handing me the ice pack, he told
me it could help relieve the pain and reduce swelling at the early stage. So moved was I that I extended my heartfelt
gratitude to him. He just smiled, saying that we were good friends and offering to send me home.
As we went out, we were surprised to find Austin holding some medicinal oil. “I usually use this kind of
oil when I get hurt and it does work. You can have a try.” he said with sincerity. All of a sudden, I felt I was the
happiest person in the world. I hugged my friends tightly, joyful tears rolling in my eyes. Blessed with such friends,
I felt I had so much to be grateful for. Joking about my basketball skill, they sent me home.

Tina was seventeen years old and always wore a bright smile. This may not seem that unusual except that she
suffered from a condition that left her muscles stiff and,for the most part, unmanageable. Because she had trouble
speaking, it was this bright smile that reflected her true personality—a great kid. Tina used a walker most of the
time to help her through the crowded school hallways. A lot of times people didn’t speak to her. Maybe it was
because she looked different and the rest of the students didn’t know how to approach her. Tina usually broke the
ice with people she met in the halls with a big “ Hi.”
One day,the assignment was to memorize three stanzas(诗节)of the poem“ Don’t Quit.” I only made the
assignment worth ten points since I figured most of my students wouldn’t do it anyway. When I was in school and a
teacher assigned a ten-point homework assignment, I would probably have blown it off myself. So I wasn’t
expecting much from today’s teenagers either. Tina was in the class, and I noticed a look on her face that was
different from the normal bright smile. The look was one of worry. “Don’t worry, Tina,” I thought to myself, “it’s
only ten points.”
The day the assignment came due arrived and as I went through my roster (花名册)my expectations were met,
as one by one each student failed to recite the poem.“Sorry, Mr. Krause,” was the standard reply. It’s only worth ten
points anyway...right?“ Finally, in frustration and half kidding, I declared that the next person who didn’t recite the
poem perfectly had to drop on the floor and give me ten push-ups(俯卧撑).

To my surprise, Tina was the next. She rose from her chair and limped to stand in front of the whole class with
the help of her walker. Then she started to recite the poem emotionally, in a rich, sonorous and almost melodious
voice. The last stanza, however, seemed a little hard for her. She stammered for a few seconds, only to utter some
fractured sentences. To our surprise, she threw her walker away and did ten push-ups, clenching her teeth.
Considering her physical disability, I never thought she would take it so seriously. I told Tina she didn't have to do
this for I was just kidding, but she ignored my words.
When she finished, a student asked “Tina, why did you do that? It’s only worth ten points!” She replied with
her familiar, bright smile, “I just want to be a normal person like you.” Everyone lapsed into the silence for a while.
Because of her disability, some students avoided her deliberately while some are overly concerned about her. It
never occurred to us that we needed to treat her equally like a normal girl. On that day, Tina not only got her nine
points out of ten, but also won respect and support from her classmates.

My personal relationship with Steve began when I was an 18-year-old college student. As I was a great lover
of fruits, I often went to the Davis Farmers Market in California’s Central Valley to buy fresh fruits. At the market Icould come face to face with some of the highest quality fruit on the planet and the experts who grew it. Once when
I was there, I saw a man shouting, loud and excited, and I realized he was shouting at me, demanding I try his
peaches.
That was how I got to know Steve, a fruit farmer who was selling wonderful peaches grown on his own farm.
We had a chat about fruits and we felt like friends. Steve invited me to work part-time on his farm and I agreed. I
would pick, prune (修剪), and run after birds, and I was paid in cash and fruit. About a year later my roommate
observed that I might be addicted to fruit. I’d regularly come home from Steve’s farm with dozens of pounds of
peaches, cherries, and apples.
When I was to graduate, Steve offered me a full-time job to drive a truck and sell fruit at Northern California
farmers’ markets. But I turned him down. I wanted to be a news reporter.
While working as a reporter, I happened to read in an old book that Fairchild, a late 19th-century food spy,
traveled the world to find crops that didn’t exist in the U.S. He was the man who brought America its first
avocados, kale, and mangoes, and he helped to get the famous cherry blossom trees in Washington D.C.For
three years I combed Fairchild’s diaries and his travel journals. And I sat up all night reading his century-old
writings.

【答案】These writings got me thinking about Steve and the fruit trees on the farm. My mouth still watered at the
thought of his fruits. Often, while I was writing a news article, I would stare out of the window and wonder how my
life would be different if I were a bit more like Steve. Instead of writing, I would be growing fruits, and making
fruits more accessible to more people. I even wondered whether the job he had offered was still open and I foundmyself phoning him from time to time, though I said nothing about working for him.
Last summer, I went to spend a couple of days on the farm. I discovered how much delight I took in getting
some dirt under my fingernails. One day, Steve asked if I could transport about 800 pounds of peaches a few
hundred miles to a market with his truck. I gladly agreed. We loaded up the truck and I set off. I was wearing a
smile on the way, feeling content that, finally, I was able to return to the job where my passion had always lain.

A week before Halloween, my young children wild with great happiness were walking and running around our
home in their Halloween costumes. Just then the babysitter called, telling me that she was extremely sorry for
asking for a day off. I knew that emergencies did occur, and I told her that I completely understood. But what was
actually going through my mind were feelings of frustration and self-pity. And I had to pack my three kids into the
car, and then drove to the hospital.
On the way, numerous things flooded into my mind, and I especially thought about how life should be going. I
was thirty years old, a mother of three girls-five-year-old twins and a one-year-old baby. At this moment, I should
be playing with them in the park or visiting the library together. But I was, once again, going to see the doctor. It
had been a year since I was diagnosed with cancer. I knew that I was one of the lucky ones. I was grateful that
surgery and chemotherapy (化疗) were over, and this was just a routine blood test. As always, there was the
remaining fear that the cancer would come back. To be honest, my family and friends were great during the past
year when I was in bad condition, but they were also busy with their lives. Therefore, I did not want to burden them
with my feelings of unhappiness. What I just wanted to see were the positive things in life and I really wanted to
express my heartfelt gratitude to them.
When we finally arrived, we sat in a crowded waiting room. Nothing special occurred until my youngest
daughter, dressed up as an angel, walked up to a woman who was in a wheelchair and accompanied by her
caregiver. My daughter looked at the woman and pointed to the vending (售货) machine next to her, saying
sweetly, “Tweet.” This was how she said “Trick or Treat”, who had been coached previously by her twin sisters.

【答案】Surprisingly, the woman, a complete stranger to us, knew exactly what my daughter meant. She asked
her caregiver to take her to the vending machine. Using her trembling right hand, the woman put enough money
into the machine, and then handed each of my girls a treat. This act caused a series of acts of purchasing things on
the vending machine. Soon, many people waiting for doctors had a candy bar or a bag of chips ready for the “Trick
or Treat”. My kids were delighted at their good fortune.
My daughters thanked everyone who gave them treats. They were very happy, smiling, singing and dancing in
the waiting room. When seeing this, everyone in the room was smiling with satisfaction. Gradually, laughter and
happiness filled all the corners of the room. I was touched by the scene. Facing unknown health problems, these
strangers still thought of giving my three little daughters some Halloween fun. I realized how kind and generous
these people are, and I felt extremely grateful to those Halloween heroes.
