When Dr. Henderson was assigning (指定) project mates for his psychology class, I secretly
hoped that he would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun
with. Above all, I hoped he wouldn’t assign me to work with the fiercely competitive and
extremely serious fellow who always wore dark clothes and apparently had a personality to match. As fate (命运) would have it, Dr. Henderson very deliberately matched everyone in class and
announced that I would be working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid.
I went up to my new teammate and introduced myself. He looked at me as though I weren’t
there. I felt he treated me as though I would hold him back and probably make him fail to get an A
in the course. He wasn’t mean or abusive; he just gave me the impression that he could do
whatever project we dreamed up better if he did it alone.
Needless to say, I didn’t look forward to an entire term of being brushed off, but I tried to
make the best of it and didn’t say anything for fear that I would make things worse.
The project required each team to develop a hypothesis (假说), set up an experiment to test
the hypothesis, do the statistical analysis and present the findings. Whatever grade the team
received would be shared by both students.
When my teammate and I met to discuss our project, I was uneasy. Here was this challenging
student who had a reputation for single-mindedness and good grades — the exact opposite of me.
I actually wanted to drop the class at one point, but stopped short because I didn’t want to give
him the satisfaction of my chickening out. I decided to stick to it no matter what.
After long discussions we somehow agreed to do a study on the psychological well-being of
teenagers. I wasn’t sure what it meant exactly, but at least we had a topic.

We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans. At first, it seemed that he dominated our
discussion for he was familiar with the topic, but I was the opposite. However, as days passed, I
gradually got involved because he started to encourage me to explain my views! I could feel his
icy shell gradually melting away and eventually I could discuss with him looking straight in his
eyes. We finished the hypothesis and experiment procedure, in great harmony actually. Things
came out that he was serious, indeed, but he seemed icy because he was lonely. We parted the day
before analysis discussion with confidence for our project. But when I returned the next morning,
he was nowhere to be found. The fact struck me feeling desperate. He didn’t come either in the
following days.
One day I got word that he was admitted to hospital for a serious disease. It was the day
before deadline and I drowned myself doing analysis and preparing for the presentation. Hearing
the word, I dashed to the hospital and found him, my dear teammate, lying on the bed, face pale.
His eyes sparkled as he saw me. Beside him I managed to finish the last tasks with his guidance--
his fingers pointing at certain figures. Then next day I went for the presentation in class.

A MOTHER'S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for
Mother's Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed.
They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the
kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to
the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left
it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some
milk. Jema found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jef turned on the second
stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the
bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece
into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked
nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next
minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm
and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jef to clean it up so they
could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff's hand touched the hot burner and he gave
a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning.
Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. “Don’t panic!”
he handed each one a wet towel, helping them clean the mess quickly. After that, Jeff stammered
out their plan, his face flushing. However, Father laughed, “Sounds great! I can teach you to
cook.” At this, Jenna and Jef almost jumped to their feet, joy in eyes. Under his careful
guidance, it didn’t take long before the French toast and chicken porridge were ready. Everything
settled, Father left the kitchen, promising to keep their secret.
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. Meeting their smiling
eyes, Mother felt confused until they presented the breakfast and said “Happy Mother’s Day”.
Mother gave them a tight hug, “Unbelievable! You can cook! It’s the biggest surprise I have
received.” Her face lit up with happiness. “They have known how to take care of others.” Father
said in response to her excitement, winking at Jenna and Jef. They couldn’t help giggling. It was a
secret only shared between them.

My dad, George, only had an eighth grade education. A quiet man, he didn't understand my
world of school activities. From age 14, he worked. And his dad, Albert, took the money my dad
earned and used it to pay family expenses.
I didn't really understand his world either: He was a livestock trucker, and l thought that I

high school graduation.
Summers in the mid, 70s were spent at home shooting baskets, hitting a baseball, or
throwing a football, preparing for my future as a quarterback on a football team. In poor weather, Iread about sports or practiced my trombone(长号).
The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a
neighboring farmer hired to work in his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired up and
we were off, riding down the field looking for weeds to spray with chemicals. After a short way,
the farmer stopped and painted at a weed which we missed. Then we began again. This happened
over and over, but we soon learned to identify different grasses like cockleburs, lamb's-quarters,
foxtails, and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but I looked forward to
the pay, even though I wasn't sure how much it would amount to.
At home, my dad said, "A job's a big step to growing up. I'm glad you will be contributing to
the household." My dad's words made me realize that my earning might not be mine to do with as
wished.
My labors lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I
wasn't interested. I decided it was not fair that l had to contribute my money.

intended to purchase my favorite chocolates. Upon approaching the house, I noticed my dad and
mom standing beside the old truck, looking sadly. It seemed as if something unpleasant happened.“How much do we still need to pay for a new truck?". asked my mother. Three hundred dollars,
but we just had two hundred left.”
I understood immediately what my parents were worried about. Really, the truck my dad
drove often broke down on the way, which made my dad in trouble. My parents had intended to
buy a new truck but couldn't afford it. Suddenly, I realized what I should do. Stepping forward, I
said, “Dad, here is what I received for my work. I think it would help you a little.” A little
surprised at what I said, my mom hugged me tightly. That night, before I went to bed, l thought I
would tell the farmer the next day that I would continue my work, after all l grew up.

Pumpkin (南瓜)carving at Halloween is a family tradition. We visit a local farm every
October. In the pumpkin field, I compete with my three brothers and sister to seek out the biggest
pumpkin. My dad has a rule that we have to carry our pumpkins back home, and as the eldest
child I have an advantage — I carried an 85-pounder back last year.
This year, it was hard to tell whether my prize or the one chosen by my 14-year-old
brother, Jason, was the winner. Unfortunately we forgot to weigh them before taking out their
insides, but I was determined to prove my point. All of us were hard at work at the kitchen table,
with my mom filming the annual event. I’m unsure now why I thought forcing my head inside the
pumpkin would settle the matter, but it seemed to make perfect sense at the time.
With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost, I bent over and pressed my head
against the opening. At first I got jammed just above my eyes and then, as I went on with my task,
unwilling to quit, my nose briefly prevented entry. Finally I managed to put my whole head into it,
like a cork (软木塞) forced into a bottle. I was able to straighten up with the huge pumpkin resting
on my shoulders.
My excitement was short-lived. The pumpkin was heavy. “I’m going to set it down, now,” I
said, and with Jason helping to support its weight, I bent back over the table to give it somewhere
to rest. It was only when I tried to remove my head that I realized getting out was going to be less
straightforward than getting in. When I pulled hard, my nose got in the way. I got into a panic as I
pressed firmly against the table and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it
was no use. “I can’t get it out!” I shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed
space.

so my neck could rest for a while. Then he said to me “Listen, honey. I have to cut this pumpkin in
half. ” I had no choice but to keep still with my eyes tightly closed and listening to the knife
moving on the pumpkin. Moments later, my head was finally released from this horrible pumpkin
cage. Then mom told me she had just filmed me managing to pull my head out of the pumpkin.
That video was posted the day before Halloween. Actually my mom had asked whether
she could post it on the Internet, because after all I was so embarrassed and looked so silly in it.
Anyway, I nodded and supported her idea. It turned out that people liked and forwarded it crazily
on the Internet, only to make me an Internet celebrity.

One fall, my wife Elli and I had a single goal: to photograph polar bears. We were staying at
a research camp outside “ the polar bear capital of the world ” — the town of Churchill in
Manitoba, Canada.
Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous. Polar bears — like all wild
animals — should be photographed from a safe distance. When I’m face to face with a polar bear,
I like it to be through a camera with a telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done.
This was one of those times.
As Elli and I cooked dinner, a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake
sniffed, and smelled our garlic bread.
The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence.
He pulled and bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.Terrified, Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear, hit pots
hard, and fired blank shotgun shells into the air. Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears
off. Not this polar bear though — he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws
(爪子).
I radioed the camp manager for help. He told me a helicopter was on its way, but it would be
30 minutes before it arrived. Making the best of this close encounter (相遇), I took some pictures
of the bear.
Elli and I feared the fence wouldn’t last through 30 more minutes of the bear’s punishment.
The camp manager suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears’ eyes, but doesn’t hurt
them. So I approached our uninvited guest slowly and, through the fence, sprayed him in the face.
With an angry roar (吼叫), the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.

A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp. Then we realized that
the spray had only angered him even more, for he seemed much fiercer this time and violently
pushed the fence like mad. My heart raced wildly, not knowing what to do. At this critical
moment, Elli grabbed several pieces of garlic bread and threw them over the fence. It worked! Thebear stopped the attack and ran to the bread. But it wasn’t long before he ate up all the bread and
came back again.
At that very moment, the helicopter arrived. “Thank goodness we are saved!” Elli cried
out. Once the helicopter landed, we got onto it in no time, excited and relieved. When we
were safe on the helicopter up in the air, I was amazed to spot that the bear had finally torn down
the fence and ran towards the food we left behind. I quickly took out the camera and photographed
the rare scene — we were robbed by a polar bear!

“I’m going to miss you so much, Poppy,” said the tall, thin teenager. He bent down to hug
his old friend goodbye. He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions
(情绪) get the better of him.
His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son
several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was
time to say goodbye for now at least. The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then
laughed.
The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile. “I guess this is it.”
he said. “I’ll see you back home in a month, okay?” His parents nodded, and they watched as he
walked out of sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy’s mother turned
to the dog, “Okay, Poppy, time to go back home.”
The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week, Poppy didn’t seem
interested in her dinner, her favorite toy, or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too, but
they knew their son would be back to visit, Poppy didn’t.
They offered the dog some of her favorite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa,
but the old girl just wasn’t her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried, “What
should we do to cheer Poppy up?” asked Dad. “We’ve tried everything.”
“I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy,” smiled Mom. “Without anybody left in the
house but us, this place could use a bit of fun. Let’s get a little dog for Poppy.”
It didn’t take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box. Poppy
welcomed them home as usual, but when she saw the box, she stopped. She put her nose on it. Her
tail began wagging (摆动) ever so slowly, then faster as she caught the smell.

Charles Rose lived in the country with his father, who taught him to read and to write. Mr.
Rose told his son that, when his morning lessons were over, he might amuse himself for one hour
as he pleased.
There was a river near by. On its bank stood the hut of a poor fisherman, who lived by selling
fish. His careful wife kept her wheel going early and late. They both worked very hard to keep
themselves above want. But they were greatly troubled for fear that their only son should never
learn to read and to write. They could not teach him themselves, and they were too poor to send
him to school.Charles called at the hut of this fisherman one day, to inquire about his dog, which was
missing. He found the little boy, whose name was Joe, siting by the table, on which he was
making marks with a piece of chalk. Charles asked him whether he was drawing pictures.
“No. I am trying to write,” said little Joe, “but I know only two words. Those I saw upon a
sign, and I am trying to write them.”
“If I could only learn to read and write,” said he, “I should be the happiest boy in the world.”
“Then I will make you happy said Charles.” I am only a little boy, but I can teach you that.”
“My father gives me an hour every day for myself. Now, if you will try to learn, you shall
soon know how to read and to write.”
Both Joe and his mother were ready to fall on their knees to thank Charles. They told him it
was what they wished above all things.
So, on the next day when the hour came, Charles put his book in his pocket, and went to
teach Joe. Joe learned very fast, and Charles son began to teach him how to write.
Some time after, a gentleman called on Mr. Rose, and said, “Charles did not always amuse
himself. I often see him go to the house of the fisherman. I fear he goes out in their boat.”

During this past year, I’ve had three instances of car trouble. Each time these things
happened, I was sick of the way most people hadn’t bothered to help. One of those times, I was on
the side of the road for close to three hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows, big signs
that said NEED A JACK (千斤顶), and offered money. Nothing. Right as I was about to give up,
a Mexican family in a small truck pulled over, and the father bounded out.
He sized up the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He conveyed
through her that he had a jack but that it was too small for the Jeep, so we would need something
to support it. Then he got a saw (锯子) from the truck and cut a section out of a big log on the side
of the road. We rolled it over and put his jack on top, and we were in business.
I started taking the wheel off, and then, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron. No
worries: He handed it to his wife, and she was gone in a flash down the road to buy a new tire
iron. She was back in 15 minutes. We finished the job, and I was a very happy man.
The two of us were dirty and sweaty. His wife prepared a pot of water for us to wash our
hands. I tried to put a $20 bill in the man’s hand, but he wouldn’t take it, so instead I went up to
the truck and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I asked the little girl where they lived.
Mexico, she said. They were in Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could work on a fruit farm for the
next few weeks. Then they would go home.

When I was about to say goodbye, the girl asked if I’d had lunch. I shook my head and
said no, wondering why she asked such a question — was she going to treat me to lunch or
something? “Wait a minute,” said the girl, and then she went back to the truck. After a few
minutes she came back with a paper bag. “Here are some Mexican snacks and you can have some
when you are hungry,” the girl smiled. I was so surprised and touched that words almost failed
me. I just said a “WOW!” instead of a “Thank you!” when I took the bag.
After they left, I got into my Jeep and opened the paper bag. When I saw what was in
the bag, I was overcome with a mixture of respect and gratefulness. In addition to the snacks, there
was the $20 bill. What a kind and respectable family! They are a perfect example of what kindness
really means. And I’m sure I will pay it forward.

Jayce began noticing when he was in kindergarten that he looked different from his
classmates. They had two hands while he had one. Due to their young age, Jayce was encouraged
that he was just like an angel with one wing folded to prepare for something.
It started when one boy laughed at him. From that day, 5-year-old Jayce turned sad. He
returned home with questions. “Why am I different? Why me? Why?” He cried to ask his mother,
Lewis Seeing Jayce was mad at God for making him that way, the poor mother felt it a huge
dagger to her heart. What made her more sorrowful was that she didn’t know what to do at that
point and how to provide answers to her son’s questions which she could never find out herself.
The white lie burst just like bubbles that day.
A few weeks later, Lewis turned on the TV to a news story, where she was shocked to find
out the answer. It was Trashaun, an eighth grader, that displayed positive energy from his head to
his toe. The 14-year-old sunny boy performed his slam dunks(大灌篮) on the TV, who had been a
hit on the Internet. However, like Jayce, he had missed most of his left arm since his childhood!
Lewis called her son Jayce in. The poor little boy got spellbound, watching dunk after dunk.
At the time, it seemed that watching Trashaun would simply be an inspiring moment for
Jayce. He saw Trashaun as a tough role model who had a seemingly similar born disability but led
a brilliant life. And had it stayed just that, Lewis would have been happy. But little did she know
that a family friend had already reached out to Trashaun, asking him to help set up a meeting with
Jayce to rebuild his confidence.

The day was not spent drowning in self-pity but for fun. The boys met at a middle School on a
sunny afternoon, and instantly bonded. Seeing his role model in flesh, Jayce was too thrilled to say
a single word but stand there with his mouth open wide. Amused by the sight, Trashaun held
Lewis’ tiny hand as if Lewis had been his little brother to play hide-and-seek first, due to their
similar congenital defect. Gradually, Trashaun led Jayce to ride bikes around the school, and
eventually, taught Jayce slam dunks. During the rest, Trashaun took up a shirt that says “Five
fingers can also make it”, which was prepared for Jayce.
Staring at the skirt he sent Jayce, Trashaun began to talk about their left arms. Trashaun
smiled, “I guess you may be puzzled, surprised, upset, even frustrated, hating God make you this

this is the perfect way God made me. With five fingers, we also made it in lots of things just now.
The missed arm is like a wing folded by an angel. Only when you’re tough will you see the wing!”
Behind stood Lewis, whose face was flooded with tears. She confirmed the 14-year-old would be
a superhero one day, so would her son, who was unfolding his hidden wing!

Thinking of this, I couldn't control my tears on my way home, but l managed a smile so I

Suddenly, the doorbell rang and Peggy ran fleetly to answer it, calling that it must be Santa
Claus. Then I heard a man's hearty voice coming and went to the door. He was a delivery manwith his arms full of parcels. "This is a mistake", I said, but he read the name on the parcels and
they were for me. When he had gone, I didn't know what to do. Subsequently, Peggy and l sat on
the floor, looking at each other unbelievably. What a surprise! I searched for the name of the
sender.
Abruptly, a note attached to one package caught my eyes. I picked up the note, which read
"Thanks for your returning the umbrella. Merry Christmas!" It was the lady who sent us these
parcels. Holding the note tightly, I was on the verge of tears, with a stream of warmth spreading
across my body. On the chilly Christmas, I forgot I had no money for the rent and only fifteen
dollars in my pocket. We just sat in our small apartment unwrapping the gifts one by one in
happiness. A sweet peace flooded into me like a blessing, which made me hopeful again.

Lisa woke up on Saturday morning very excited. Today she was turning 10. She thought her
mother would make her a special breakfast. Last year on her birthday, Lisa woke up to the smell
of pancakes and sausage cooking. The kitchen table was full of fresh fruit and juice, and her
family had even bought lots of fresh flowers to put on the table.
But when she went downstairs this morning, her father, mother and brother were eating
cereal (麦片) at the table, just like any other day. No one even said “Happy birthday.”
When the phone rang and her mother announced that Lisa’s aunt wanted to speak with her,
she knew that it must be to wish her the best on her 10th birthday. But to Lisa’s surprise, her aunt
simply wanted to remind her to pick up her mail the next week while her aunt was out of town.
Lisa was quite confused. She thought that her family would say something about her special
day, but she didn’t want to seem upset. She tried to be cheerful. After all, she was looking forward
to meeting her friends in the park soon. Surely they were going to be excited about her birthday.
When Lisa arrived at the park, her friend Jane was the first to greet her. “Nice day, isn’t it,
Lisa?” she asked.
Lisa, ready for her friend to wish her a happy birthday, responded excitedly, “Yes, it is! It’s
a great day. You know why?”
“Because it’s Saturday and the weather is great!” Jane replied.
Lisa nodded, but looked down in disappointment.
Soon the rest of her friends arrived, and they all had a good time playing soccer and
spending time together. But Lisa couldn’t help but think that it was strange that none of them had
mentioned her birthday.
As she walked home in the late afternoon sun, Lisa tried her best not to cry. How could
everyone forget her birthday? She was close to tears by the time she reached her home.

On stepping in, Lisa was quite surprised. The living room was beautifully decorated, yet
nobody was in sight. Before Lisa realized it, an excited shout came, “A surprise”. People crowded
from behind the door, sofa and cupboard. Lisa saw her mother, father, brother, aunt, Jane and
other friends she just said goodbye to standing around her, all laughing. “They all remember my
birthday!” thought Lisa. Instantly, she felt her eyes a little wet. On the table lay a lovely birthday
cake and her aunt was signaling all to gather around.
When the birthday candles were lit, the warmest moment came. Everyone sent best wishes to
Lisa heartily and gifts began to pile up in her arms. Then came the birthday song sung gently
together. In the soft candlelight, every smiling face was so touching. Looking around, Lisa felt a
strong feeling arise, and that was happiness. “ How happy I am! I’m so blessed to have so many
people to love me” Lisa thought. Tears welled up into her eyes again.

Andy and Eric were two friends who often played together. One day, on their way back
home from school, they rode slowly, talking about the fishing trip that they had planned for the
coming summer vacation. While turning a corner, Andy cried out, “A fight near the lake! Let’s go
to watch!”
“No,” said Eric. “Let’s go home and not get involved in their quarrel. Stay away from it, or
we may get into trouble. What’s more, our parents are waiting for us at home and I don’t want
them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward (胆小鬼).” Andy laughed at him. Eric was a little annoyed, but he didn’t
say anything, just riding home directly. The next day, he went to school as usual.
However, Andy had told all the class that Eric was too timid to do anything brave. So the
whole class laughed at him a lot. And from then on, they looked down on Eric, unwilling to play
with him. Eric was very sad but he didn’t blame Andy for his being rude to him, because he
learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Therefore, he ignored their teasing,
studying even harder. What was different was that he had to go home alone.
Several days later, Andy together with his new friends was riding home. They were so
absorbed in their conversation that they were unaware of everything else around them.
Suddenly, Andy noticed an unusual buzz of noise. He came to a stop and looked curiously
up to the heavens. What he saw shocked and terrified him. A huge swarm of bees filled the sky
like a black cloud and the noisy mass seemed to be heading angrily towards them.
“Bees!” someone shouted. The boys were caught in great panic. All of them except Andy
rode as fast as possible to escape. Andy was too scared to move.

Andy stopped there, with the buzz louder and louder. Just at that moment, Eric rode rapidly
towards him like an arrow. He stopped, threw off his clothes and wrapped up their faces. After
that, he shouted to Andy, “This way! There is a lake ahead!” With no time to waste, they rode
furiously in the direction of the lake, the crazy bees following them. Finally, they made it to the
lake. Off their bikes and into the cool water they lived, disappearing below the surface and away
from the savage insects. After holding their breath for as long as they could, they came up for air
and noticed the bees had gone.
Dragging themselves out of the lake, they struggled up to the shore. Andy looked at Eric
gratefully and was ashamed of having called Eric a coward. He realized that Eric had true courage.
He hugged Eric, saying “sorry” to Eric repeatedly for his rude behavior and asked for his
forgiveness. Eric forgave him happily. He and Andy were friends again and they went hometogether as usual. From that, Andy learned what true courage was: never be afraid to do good, but
always fear to do evil.
