Airplane designer Burt Rutan was 14 when Sputnik 1, the first man-made satellite to orbit the earth, waslaunched in 1957. He believed that the government’s research into space travel would mean he too would be able to
journey to space. By the mid-1990s, however, Rutan had realized that waiting for the government wasn’t going to
work. It was then that he determined to build his own spaceship. “If my dream was going to come true, I’d have to
get things started myself,” said Rutan.
Rutan was encouraged to build his own spaceship by the history of airplane design itself. At that time, only a
few people had tried flying in an airplane. Yet by 1912, hundreds of pilots had flown airplanes that were developed
through private companies. Soon factories in France, England, and Germany were producing hundreds, and then
thousands, of airplanes a year. “Why? I believe the answer lay in two observations: ‘That’s gotta be fun’ and ‘Maybe I
can do that,’” says Rutan.
Rutan’s optimism finally paid off. In 2004 his specially designed spaceship, SpaceShipOne, successfully entered
space and made it back to Earth twice in two weeks. Those were the requirements to win the ten-million-dollar Ansari
X Prize, a prize designed to encourage the development of private space travel. Rutan’s success got the world’s
attention, and various plans for private space travel began to appear.
In one such plan, Sir Richard Branson was licensed SpaceShipOne technology for his company, Virgin Galactic,
which hopes to offer people of all shapes, sizes, and ages the opportunity to visit space. Virgin’s first spaceships will
have two pilots and six passengers aboard. Passengers will float weightlessly in space for six thrilling minutes as they
gaze out at space through a large window. “Every time I look up in the sky at night, I think about how incredible the
opportunity is. People have been waiting for this moment for thousands of years.” Branson said.
4. When did Rutan probably decide to build a spaceship?
A. In 1912. B. In 1957. C. In 1994. D. In 2004.
5. What motivated Burt Rutan to design his own spaceship?
A. His dream to be a pilot. B. His work with Virgin Galactic.
C. The government’s support. D. The development of airplane design.
6. What was the significance of Rutan’s winning the Ansari X Prize?
A. It helped him travel into space.
B. It promoted private space travel.
C. It saved Rutan plenty of money.
D. It funded Rutan’s future research.
7. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Suffering is needed to succeed.
B. Some are wise and some are otherwise.
C. Hope for the best and prepare for the worst.D. Don’t limit your challenges, challenge your limits.

With generative artificial intelligence tools — such as ChatGPT — being widely used in foreign language
education and translation tasks, the rapid development of such tools has faced some challenges and doubts. However,
some educators, students and translators see generative AI as more of a chance rather than a threat.
Wang Huashu, a professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University, said generative AI is changing foreign language
education. It opens up new possibilities for personalized teaching. “Teachers can use AI to create realistic dialogue
scenes for speaking practice, while students benefit from immediate comments on oral and written language skills,
improving their communication abilities,” said Wang, adding that many universities are using AI to enrich their
courses. The rise of AI does redefine translators’ roles.
“Though AI finishes the translation tasks in seconds, it struggles with tasks like cultural and contextual
understanding. So, educators need to focus more on students’ thinking and skills to ensure high-quality language
use,” he added. For fears of AI replacing foreign language professionals, Wang was against such fears. “Translation
is not only a mechanical task but also a process of deep cultural understanding and value reconstruction,” Wang said
AI tools are important for bridging linguistic, cultural and physical worlds, but they cannot own the poetic, creative
and emotional qualities that human translators possess.
Yuki, a graduate student in Vietnamese translation at Guangxi University, said AI’s abilities in Vietnamese
translation are limited due to the language’s unique qualities. ChatGPT, which she described as her “cyber teacher”,
has improved translation speed and offered fresh views for academic writing, but it struggles with creative content,
she said. She added that those without strong language skills may blindly follow AI-generated translations, preventing
their professional development.
Professor Wang said both teachers and students must stay updated with the latest educational technologies, and
courses like AI-assisted translation should be in place to prepare them for future challenges.
8. What does the underlined word probably mean?
A. Change. B. Assist. C. Replace. D. Strengthen.
.
9 What’s true about generative AI according to Professor Wang?
A. It threatens the roles of translators.
B. It can finish all the tasks as expected.
C. It makes the personalized learning possible.
D. It has the same qualities as human translators.
10. Why does Yuki mention ChatGPT?
A. To introduce a new generative AI tool.B. To warn people not to use AI in translation.
.
C To prove AI has disadvantages in translation.
D. To show AI can improve translation speed.
11. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Generative AI is Rising
B. What Benefits Generative AI Brings
C. How to Face Generative AI Properly
D. Generative AI Rocks the Language World

Monarch butterflies are among the planet’s most powerful migrators. Every autumn, a new generation is born
in the northern United States and southern Canada. They then fly far to the mountains of Central Mexico, between
2,485 and 2,982 miles away. To help this migration, a team of scientists has planted new overwintering sites along
the slopes of a Mexican volcano.
The butterflies overwinter in the forests of sacred fir trees at high altitudes (海拔). However, these forests that
the monarchs need to survive their migration are at risk because of climate change. Creating new forests on the higher
mountains and outside the insects’ current geographic range could be a solution.
“Here, we show the possibility of planting new trees on a nearby volcano,” Saenz-Romero, a biologist in Mexico
said. “We call this ‘assisted migration’: planting seedlings (幼苗) grown from seeds from existing sacred fir populations
to new sites whose climate by 2060 will become similar to that at today’s overwintering sites because of global
warming.”
The seedlings were planted at four tested altitudes-11,154, 11,811, 12,467, and 13,123 feet. The last was included
because it’s the highest altitude at which sacred fir trees can survive in today’s climate.
Researchers found that when seedlings were moved to locations higher and colder than the initial stand, their
growth and survival declined. At the highest altitude of 13,123 feet, the growth was nearly zero and many seedlings
showed frost damage. Between 11,811 and 12,467 feet, the seedlings had 27 percent less survival than at the baseline
of 11,154 feet. According to the researchers, this survival is “very acceptable.”
“These planted places would finally serve as overwintering sites for the monarch butterfly under warmer
climates,” said Saenz-Romero. “In fact, as the earth heats, monarch butterflies have established new and large colonies
at colder places, which suggests that they already are searching for new places to overwinter. Once our seedlings are
fully grown, they will hopefully discover our planting site, too.”
12. What’s the purpose of planting forests on a Mexican volcano?
A. To study the effects of global warming.B. To protect the monarchs from attackers.
C. To introduce new tree species to the region.
D. To provide new overwintering sites for monarchs.
13. Why did the researchers include the altitude of 13.123 in the test?
A. It’s the peak of the volcano. B. It’s fit for monarchs.
C. It’s the survival point of seedlings. D. It’s ideal for sacred fir trees.
14. What does Paragraph 5 mainly show?
A. Researchers were satisfied with the survival of seedlings.
B. The higher the altitude was, the worse the seedlings grew.
C. Living conditions for monarch butterflies were difficult.
D. The seedlings were less likely to survive at lower altitudes.
.
15 What does Saenz-Romero conclude about monarchs?
A. The warmth is forcing them to move.
.
B New sites are well prepared.
C. They follow fixed migration routes.
D. They lack food in current sites.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a Saturday afternoon. I was playing with my puppy Tojo happily when Dad told me to get ready. I don’t
like Saturdays! Even though it’s a holiday for most children, it is not for me because I need to go to the football
club.
Many kids love sports, but not me. I prefer staying at home to running breathlessly on the field. Obviously, I am
not a good player. The coach never judges or pushes me but I know my teammates think I’m useless. Usually, after
practice, my teammates would ask me to stay out of the game and I would just nod.
Last Thursday, the coach told us that we would be competing with another club in a championship a month later
and many people would come to see the game. Our opponents (对手) were the last winner and I felt nervous at the
thought of the embarrassment. I couldn’t help thinking if our team lost, that would be all because of me. Having
realized that I couldn’t take all the blame and criticism, I decided to make some changes in my attitude towards the
sports and my weekly training practice.
Then the big day came. Knowing my teammates were unwilling to count me in the game, I walked directly
towards the bench and watched the game. Soon, it was the second half and neither team kicked the ball into the
other’s net so the score was kept 0:0. When there were only ten minutes left, in an attempt to win back control of the
football, our main striker got red card and one of our defenders was knocked down. “Simon, warm up and fight for
your team,” the coach looked at me and said firmly, “I know you can and it’s time for you to know that now.” With
shaking legs, I stepped onto the field, hoping to stay away from the ball and waiting for the last whistle to blow.注意:
1续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
At that moment, the ball came towards me.
