My husband is experimenting with letting pigs be free range. It’s a difficult experiment because he
doesn’t have a lot of other farms as a model. Most farmers think the pigs need to be confined (圈养) so
they are manageable to the farmer. There are so many pigs and only one farmer, so most of farming is
about how to get the pigs grown, and to market, without letting them run wild on the farm.
Now we have pigs moving all over the farm and it’s fun to watch the little baby pigs. They run
around like dogs, playing with each other and with things they find. They even try to slip into the alpaca
(羊驼) barn. Pigs are curious about everything. They have the IQ of a three-year-old child, and they are
just so fun to see exploring and learning on their own. When they want milk, they go back to their moms,
who generally stay by the nest.
Setting out from the MTR Station,“Walk for Green” recommends various walking routes on
campus, one of which covers the YIA Building, LSK Building and LWS Building. Card readers for
different walking routes have been installed (安装) to record the number of points completed by“Walk
for Green” participants. Participants who collect 60 points within 30 days will be awarded the title

If you’re reading this, you were probably born in the 2000s. The oh-ohs. The 21st century. That
would make you young, creative, connected, global, and no doubt smart. Maybe good-looking, too.
Right? But what do other people think about your generation?
Eyes trained on the patient’s leg, the doctor continues with the operation. If the injured limbs (肢)
are not removed, infection and death will quickly follow. Its only tool is a pair of strong jaws (下巴) —
for both the doctor and the patient are ants.
Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the screen in front of you than the world around
you. They think of you as the “face-down generation” because you use your phone so much and they
wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family. Are today’s teenagers too busy texting and
taking selfies to become successful in real life---or “IRL”, as you would say?
Biologist Erik Frank has spent much time looking at ants caring for each other’s wounds. Among
them, some ants show a highly effective amputation (截肢) system. They use a preventive（预防性的）
approach, cutting off the injured limb whether it is infected or not. Because if they waited until an
infection became obvious, the bacteria would have already reached the rest of the body, and the
operation would no longer save the ant.
Other adults worry that today’s youth are spoilt (宠坏的) and don’t want to face the challenges of
adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “helicopter
parents
” who were
always there to guide and help them with a busy schedule filled with homework and extra-curricular
activities such as dancing, drawing, or sports. With parents who do everything for them, today’s youth
seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.
But ants do more than that. Dr. Frank observed that ants also carry injured nestmates back home to
care for them. Meanwhile, seriously infected ants will be removed from the nest. In this way, ants protect
the whole group to keep the nest safe from widespread infection. These are examples of “social
immunocompetence”, which refers to a group’s ability to use social behaviors to control infection.
Ants aren’t the only animals that take care of their injured companions; larger animals like
monkeys, crows, and lions do it too. However, the driving force behind this caring behavior is
completely different. While birds and mammals (哺乳动物) likely use reasoning to help each other, ants
simply rely on strong jaws rather than complex thought or empathy for their effective medical system to
work.
Does the face-down generation need a heads-up? Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today’
s teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They also seem to be
enthusiastic (热情的) and willing to become leaders. More young people than ever volunteer to help
their communities. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won
the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls’ rights to go to school.
Frank’s research could also bring possible value to humans. He has found 70 wound-healing
chemicals, which may be useful against harmful bacteria with resistance to antibiotics (抗生素). In this
way, these ants could inspire future breakthroughs in modern medicine.
So if you’re one of the oh-ohs, there’s reason to be hopeful about the future. Things are looking up
for the face-down generation. Chances are that you will do GR8 (great) and LOL (laugh out loud).
