Want to try an experiment with your parents? Ask them to stand next to you in front of a mirror.
What do you see? They might say you have your mom’s eyes or your dad’s ears. But which
parent are you most similar to?
These similarities and differences all come down to DNA - the basic building blocks of life that
carry genes(基因) from our parents. These genes can affect everything from our blood type and
eye color to the risk of suffering from certain diseases.
Scientists have found that some of the DNA we inherit (继承) only comes from one parent. For
example, our mitochondria (线粒体) have DNA that comes only from our mothers, according to
Live Science. Some studies suggest that mitochondrial DNA plays a key role in our athletic
endurance(耐力).
“That’s a clear example that you’re more similar to your mom than your dad,” said Marika
Charalambous, a scientist at King’s College London.
Other than this exception (例外) for the mitochondria, scientists generally agree that we get a
roughly even(相等的) number of genes from both our mother and our father—a 50-50 split.
However, there is another factor—which genes actually get expressed?
Gene expression refers to which genes get “switched on” as we develop. Not every gene that
we inherit gets activated (激活) in this way. According to one study published in Nature, genes
inherited from male mice get expressed more often than genes inherited from female mice.
However, we have yet to prove that this is also true for humans. So for the moment, we can’t
really say why some of us tend to look more like our mothers or our fathers. It’s just a roll of the
genetic dice (骰子).
1. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. The importance of genes.
B. The risks of carrying some genes.
C. The similarities between children and their parents.
D. The differences between a mother’s and a father’s genes.2. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. You receive more DNA from your mother.
B. DNA from your father affects your athletic abilities.
C. Some DNA comes only from your mother.
D. You are more like your father due to your DNA.
3. What does it mean when a gene gets expressed?
A. It changes its function.
B. It gets passed on to a child.
C. It comes from the male parent.
D. It influences a person’s physical features.
4. What do we know from the story?
A. Animal research cannot be trusted.
B. Scientists shouldn’t do more research on DNA.
C. Mice and humans have very few genes in common.
D. It’s hard to explain why we are more like one of our parents.
