Rising temperatures driven by the climate crisis are cutting the sleep of people across the
world,thelargeststudytodatehasfound.
The researchers used data from sleep-tracking wristbands (手环) used by 47,000 people
over 7 months and across 68 countries. The analysis revealed that due to increasing night-time
temperatures,theaverageglobalcitizenislosing44hoursofsleepayear.
However,lostsleepaffectssomegroupsmuchmorethanothers.Thesleeplossperdegree
of warming is about a quarter higher for women than men, twice as high for those over 65
years old and three times higher for those in less affluent nations, where people have less
accesstocoolingfeatures.
Previous studies have shown that rising temperatures damage health, including increasing
heart attacks, mental health crises, and accidents and injuries. Poor sleep has also been shown
to havetheseeffects,andtheresearcherssaytheirnewstudysuggests thatdisturbedsleepmay
be a key mechanism by which heat causes these health impacts. The researchers say their data
showsnosignsofpeoplebeingabletoadapttohotternights.
“In this study, we provide the first planetary-scale (世界范围的) evidence that warmer
than average temperatures cut human sleep,” said Kelton Minor, who led the research. “It’s
very likely the effect is more serious.” Minor added that the research had important

Since the 1970s, scientists have beensearchingforways to link thebrain with computers.
Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send orders to
machines. Recently, two researchers, Jose Millan and Michele Tavella from the Federal
Polytechnic Schoolin Lausanne,Switzerland,showed asmallrobotic wheelchair directedbya

“Our brain has billions of nerve cells (神经细胞). These send signals through the spinal
cord (脊髓) to the muscles (肌肉) to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries or
other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the muscles.” Tavella
says. “Our system allows disabled people to communicate with outside world and also to
controlthemachine.”
The researchers designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals
fromthescalp(头皮)andsendsthemtoacomputer.Thecomputerunderstandsthesignalsand
directs the motorized wheelchair. The wheelchair also has two cameras that recognize objects
initspath.Theyhelpthecomputerreacttoordersfromthebrain.
Prof. Millan, the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer, software that
understands brain signals and turns them into simple orders. “The practical possibilities that
BCI technology offers to disabled people can be divided into two kinds: communication, and
controllingthemachine.Oneexampleisthiswheelchair.”
He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients, so as to prove that
this is a technology they can benefit from. And the other is to ensure that they can use the
