Wang Xuan — The Pioneer of Chinese Printing
5 / 7
学科网(北京)股份有限公司In the past, Bi Sheng invented movable type printing. But Wang Xuan, a computer scientist, turned a new page
in Chinese printing. He was a pioneer in modern Chinese printing.
From a young age, Wang showed his perseverance. At nine, when hiking with his family, he refused to stop
halfway but went straight to the top of the mountain.
Wang’s perseverance made him become a computer scientist. In August 1974, the Chinese government started
a project to computerize Chinese characters. Although Wang was ill in bed when he knew the news, he began to
research it the next day! However, Chinese words were very difficult to type. Many people didn’t believe him when
he first talked about using computers to print. Wang failed many times and his workers were sad. But he never gave
up and he told them to try harder. On Wang’s road to success, he almost took no holidays. Even on Chinese New
Year’s Eve, Wang and his wife were too busy to buy food and drinks, and they just shared some tofu to celebrate.
In 1980, Wang’s dream came true at last. In late 1988, a Chinese newspaper first completely used laser printing
