Jane Goodall was only 26 years old when she first went to Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania in July
1960.
While researchers understood that humans and chimpanzees (黑猩猩) were closely related, they had no
knowledge about the behavior of primates (灵长目动物) in the wild. The first three months were difficult without
making any meaningful scientific observations or being able to approach the chimpanzees. But Goodall finally
managed to gain the trust of a male with silver hair that she named David Greybeard. In November 1960, she made
an observation that would forever change the way the animals were understood. David Greybeard bent a stick and
used it as a tool to clean termites (白蚁) in a nest. The ability to use tools was what scientists believed set humans
apart from animals.
Goodall’s career track changed after the “Understanding Chimpanzees” conference in Chicago in 1986.
Although she helped organize it, the sessions she attended showed her the devastating effects of deforestation of
habitats and the inhumane conditions chimpanzees faced in medical research. She told Living on Earth’s Steve
Curwood in an interview in 2020 that she had no idea of the extent of the dangers the great chimpanzees faced. “I
went as a scientist,” Goodall said. “I left as an activist.” Her conservation efforts started years earlier when she
founded the Jane Goodall Institute which devotes a large part of its efforts to wildlife conservation and to
continuing the field research in Gombe Stream National Park, according to the press release. But Goodallunderstood that, if we really wanted to change the world, we must get youth involved. That’s why she started the
Roots & Shoots program in 1991, now active in 75 countries, to empower young people to protect the world. In
January 2025, she was awarded the Medal of Freedom for her contributions to science and her advocacy for the
planet.
Goodall passed away on October 1, 2025. She remained active until just days before her death. Her legacy of
research and advocacy will live on.
24. Why did Jane Goodall go to Gombe Stream National Park in 1960?
A. To observe termites. B. To travel with scientists.
C. To do a field study. D. To name a chimpanzee.
25. What does the underlined word “devastating” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Disastrous. B. Beneficial. C. Significant. D. Apparent.
26. Why did Jane Goodall launch the Roots & Shoots program?
A. To establish partnerships for habitat protection.
B. To encourage youth participation in conservation.
C. To fund scientific research on chimpanzees’ behaviors.
D. To train young people to become wildlife researchers.
27. What can be inferred about Jane Goodall?
A. Her research methods were doubtful.
B. Her efforts were limited to chimpanzees.
C. Her focus was on theoretical contributions.
D. Her advocacy work had a global impact.

The fast development of AI-generated content (AIGC), especially AI translation, is accelerating (加快) the
speed at which China’s online novels are being introduced to the world, while global online writers tend to flood to
a common platform to expand the world’s online novel market, according to the 2023 China Online Literature
Exporting Overseas Trend Report.
“Online literature not only brings Chinese culture and works to the world, but also witnesses the global
development of this Chinese model,” said the president of a publisher.
“After going through publishing authorization (授权), overseas translation and exporting models overseas,
China’s online literature has reached a new stage of global IP co-creation as writers from different countries and
regions work together to develop online literature IP, which has led to a new wave of globalization in onlineliterature,” he added.
“As of October 2023 an overseas website owned by the publisher, had launched about 3,600 translated works
of Chinese online literature,” said the report. The platform has been visited by more than 220 million users, who
spend more than 1.5 hours daily on reading. More than 150,000 comments are usually made in a single day,
including exchanges about works and discussions about the cities, food and culture from various countries.
With the help of AI, the translation efficiency (效率) of online novels has increased by nearly 100 times, and
the cost has been reduced by more than 90 percent. “Due to these advantages, the platform Web Novel will
introduce AI translation for English, Spanish, French, Japanese and other languages, to help good Chinese and
foreign stories to reach a wider international audience,” said Yang Chen, editor-in-chief of the publisher.
Chinese online literature has been exported overseas for more than 20 years. It has shared with the world not
only excellent cultural works, but also a set of creative mechanisms (机制) and industrial models based on the
digital age. As such, global industrial integration has become a significant trend in the development of online
literature.

After nearly a decade of trying, Apple finally gave up its effort to produce an electric car last year, canceling aproject that soaked up $10 billion. But last year in China, the electronics maker Xiaomi launched its first electric
car after just three years of development and delivered 135,000 vehicles. It has vowed to double that number in
2025.
Xiaomi’s ability to succeed where Apple could not shows how thoroughly China has come to dominate the
supply chain for electric vehicles. Chinese companies have mastered electric vehicle manufacturing. By tapping
that infrastructure, Xiaomi was able to get components quickly and cheaply. And Xiaomi is not the only Chinese
consumer electronics company that has branched out to electric vehicles. The telecommunications giant Huawei,
which the U. S. government has targeted with sanctions and legal action for years, is making autonomous driving
software. Huawei has teamed up with multiple Chinese automakers, including Seres Group and the state-owned
firms SAIC Motor, BAIC and Chery.
Xiaomi’s first electric car was brought out last March: the SU7, a four-door sedan with artificial intelligence
features that can help with parking, play movies for passengers and program Xiaomi home appliances from the
road. Mr. Lei said it looks like a Porsche. But at $30,000, it’s a quarter of the price. While the SU7 earned Xiaomi
just a small fraction of the sales of China’s top electric vehicle makers, it puts Xiaomi among the Chinese
companies that are dealing a major blow to foreign automakers’ long command over China’s market for premium
cars. In the year since the SU7 went on sale, Porsche deliveries in China were down nearly 30 percent.
Chinese electric vehicle companies have benefited from billions of dollars in government support, which has
helped them gain control of the supply chain down to the very minerals inside the car batteries. This early edge
helped two Chinese companies, BYD and Contemporary Amperex Technology Company.
Xiaomi used this supply chain to its advantage. Its cars contain batteries from BYD and CATL. It was able to
quickly start production by taking over a factory from Beijing Auto Group. Construction workers in Beijing are
working around the clock on a second factory. All this manufacturing capacity helps Chinese electric vehicle firms
move from development to production in far less time than traditional automakers in China, enabling them to bring
new models to market quickly and focus on making software that they can continually update, said Stephen W.
Dyer, head of Asia Automotive at AlixPartners.
32. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By listing examples. B. By stating opinions.
C. By making a contrast. D. By giving definitions.
33. Why does the author mention Apple’s failure?
A. To show Apple’s poor management.B. To prove electric car production is difficult.
C. To highlight China’s EV development.
D. To compare it with Huawei’s situation.
34. What does Paragraph 3 focus on?
A. SU7’s price advantage. B. SU7’s features and influence.
C. Porsche’s decline in China. D. Xiaomi’s EV production plan.
35. How did Xiaomi start its electric car production quickly?
A. By developing new technology. B. By building its own factory.
C. By getting government support. D. By getting hold of a factory.

Story Tree is a website for sharing, encouraging, and recording personal and family memories and history. It
can be done online or offline, in real-time, or in your own time, all in a fun and simple new way. 36 .All of
them work well together to support each other.

memory books. Everyone belonging to your Story Tree can add and read the entries in real time, or at any time!
Additionally, once a week Story Tree sends everyone in a Story Tree group an interesting prompt (提示) into
their Story Chat as well as to their emails, to help bring back memories and encourage reflection and discussion.
38 (But if your brother tells a big fish story, you will surely want to correct it with the true version!)
And if you prefer to save your stories and memories in an additional “private journal”, you can simply create a
synchronized (同步的) personal Story Tree that only you can see, 39 In fact, create as many Story Trees
as you like, and synchronize as many as you like too!
40 It’s like having a kind and curious author come to your home whenever you want and have her
interview you to compose your personal or family biography. Who doesn’t want to have a personal history book
written for them? There are over 700 questions in five categories the Story Book interviewer can ask you, all about
your life and family, at your leisure.
The fourth and final key tool is Story Box. It can hold all your old photos, videos, memorable documents,
talks, artwork, schoolwork to either store or to sort out later.
A. Story Tree does all of this through four key tools.
B. Memories can only be shared and preserved alone.C. Each person can read it and respond, or not, as they like.

In a small and dusty village in England, there lived a young man named Tom Harper. His clothes were old and
torn, and his shoes had holes that let in the rain. Tom lived in a tiny room above a noisy cafe, where he worked
washing dishes for a few coins each day. Life was hard, but Tom had a dream: he wanted to own a bakery, filling
the streets with the warm smell of fresh bread.
Tom’s parents passed away when he was young, leaving him with nothing but a kind heart and a strong will.
Every night, after cleaning the cafe’s pots, he sat by a flickering candle and read books about baking. He borrowed
these books from Mrs. Green, the village librarian, who saw something special in Tom’s bright eyes.
One day, a poster appeared in the village square. It announced a baking competition in London, with a grand
prize of £10,000. Tom’s heart raced. This could be his chance! But the journey to London cost money, and Tom had
none. He worked extra hours, saved every penny, and even sold his only coat to buy a train ticket.
When the day came, Tom boarded the train with a small bag and a nervous smile. In London, the competition
was held in a huge hall filled with the best bakers from across England. Tom felt small among them. He had no
fancy tools, just an old wooden spoon and a recipe he’d created himself, a soft, golden loaf with herbs from the
village fields. His hands shook as he mixed flour, water, and yeast (酵母). The shake resulted from not just his
nervousness, but also the coldness.
After what seemed to be a century, Tom finally completed his herb loaf. All the baked bread and cakes were
presented to the judges. The judges tasted them carefully. Hours passed, and Tom’s stomach twisted with worry. It
seemed hard for him to make it through the announcement of the winner, both psychologically and physically.
Before the judges announced the winner, Tom’s eyes accidentally met a familiar figure’s eyes — Mrs. Green was
among the audience!
