Bella was born in Thailand in 1965. Her father’s job was to look after Asian elephants. Bella started helping her
father when she was 12 years old. She soon fell in love with these elephants. When Bella was 20, she got a job at a
nature reserve in Chiang Mai. She enjoyed taking care of baby elephants. In September 1988, one of the baby
elephants was missing. Bella was very worried. She looked for it day and night for two days. On the second night,
while she was looking for the missing elephant, she fell into a river and died.

In the late nineteenth century, a French expert discovered a rare animal in China—the golden monkeys. Most of
them live high up in the mountains of Sichuan Province. They usually eat fruit and bamboo, and sometimes eat
insects. Golden monkeys usually live in groups. The family members look after each other. They find food
together and play together. A mother golden monkey can give birth to two baby golden monkeys every time. The
baby golden monkey can grow up to over one kilo after a month. The number of wild golden monkeys is only
about 700. China has set up several natural reserves to protect them.
