BChinese are very proud of their culture of food and will do their best to show
their hospitality. The following dining manners can help you learn more about China.
If you are being treated by a Chinese host, be prepared for a ton of food. And
sometimes the Chinese host use their chopsticks to put food in your bowl or plate.
This is a sign of politeness. The proper thing to do would be to eat whatever it is and
say how yummy it is. If you feel uncomfortable with this, you can just say a polite
thank you and leave the food there.
When you have meals in China, don’t stick your chopsticks upright in the rice
bowl. Instead, lay them on your dish. The reason for this is that when somebody dies,
the shrine (盒子) to them includes a bowl of sand or rice with two sticks of incense
(香) stuck upright in it. So if you stick your chopsticks in the rice bowl, it looks like
this shrine and is like wishing death upon a person at the table!
Make sure the spout (壶嘴) of the teapot is not facing anyone. It is impolite to set
the teapot down where the spout is facing towards somebody. The spout should
always be directed to where nobody is sitting, usually just outward from the table.
Don’t tap on your bowl with your chopsticks. Beggars tap on their bowls, so this
is not polite. Also, when the food is coming too slow in a restaurant, people will tap
their bowls. If you are in someone’s home, it is like blaming the cook.
The meal usually begins with a set of at least four cold dishes, to be followed by
the main courses of hot meat and vegetable dishes. Soup then will be served to be
followed by staple food (主食) from rice, noodles to dumplings. If you wish to have
your rice to go with other dishes, you should say so in good time, for most of the
Chinese choose to have the staple food at last or have none of them at all.
5. How many dining manners are mentioned in the passage?
A. Two B. Three C. Four D. Five
6. If you are a guest, you should ______.
A. tap on your bowl with your chopsticks
B. make the spout of the teapot face someone at the table
C. lay your chopsticks on your dish when you have meals
D. refuse the food the host use his chopsticks to put in your bowl
7. What does the underlined phrase “in good time” in the last paragraph mean?
A. 提前 B. 及时 C. 好时光 D. 按时
8. This passage is most probably written for ______.
A. the cooks in the restaurant B. the waiters and waitresses
C. Chinese visitors to foreign countries D. foreign visitors to China

5小题)
Good manners are an important thing to have since it shows. Having good social
manners can help you develop better relationships and make you more enjoyable to be
around. If you’re having a meal with others, then make sure you use good manners
while you’re eating. You should be polite while you’re online so you don’t offend or
overshare(过度分享)with others.
● Having Good Conversational Manners
Use “please” and “thank you” when you’re asking for something. Whenever you
make a request or you need to ask for something, start by saying “please.” That way, it
doesn’t sound like you’re demanding the other person to do things for you. Once
someone finishes the task that you asked them to do, respond (回应) by saying “thank
you” so the other person knows you’re grateful for what they just did.
● Introduce yourself by name when you meet someone for the first time.
If you’re getting together with someone and you haven’t met before, introduceyourself by name and ask them what their name is. When they say their name, repeat
it so you have a better chance at remembering it later on. Offer your hand for a
handshake and use a firm grip, but not so firm that you hurt the other person.
● Listen to other people without interrupting (打断) them.
When another person starts talking, make eye contact with them and pay
attention to what they’re saying so you can carry on the conversation. Avoid trying to
talk over them or cutting them off since you’ll come across as rude. Once the person
finished speaking, respond to what they just said so they know you were listening to
what they were telling you.
● Avoid using bad language.
Impolite language can come across as rude, especially when you use it in public
conversation. Do your best to try and eliminate(消除) bad words from your
vocabulary while you’re talking with other people. Rather than saying the word, try to
find a replacement or just pause during your conversation to recollect your thoughts
and plan out what you’re going to say.
1. What should you do if you are having a meal with others?
_____________________________________________________________________
2. How can we respond once someone finishes the task that you asked them to do?

3. Why should we repeat it when they say their name?
_____________________________________________________________________
4. When can we respond to what they just said?
_____________________________________________________________________
5. What do you think of using bad language?
_____________________________________________________________________
2. 阅读填空
先通读下面的短文,然后根据短文内容,在文章后表格的空格内填入一个最
